Multispecies studies are known for tackling human exceptionalism. Whilst the field has seen a remarkable increase in popularity amongst scholars in the humanities and social sciences, critiques argue that it neglects inequalities and consequential differences amongst humans and between humans and other-than-humans. These critiques are especially relevant in the context of Southern Africa, where extreme inequalities amongst humans persist whilst wildlife is often perceived to enjoy a favoured position in the region's prominent conservation industries.

In eukaryotes, genes produce a variety of distinct RNA isoforms, each with potentially unique protein products, coding potential or regulatory signals such as poly(A) tail and nucleotide modifications. Assessing the kinetics of RNA isoform metabolism, such as transcription and decay rates, is essential for unraveling gene regulation. However, it is currently impeded by lack of methods that can differentiate between individual isoforms.

Article Synopsis
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a leftover from fetal circulation that affects about 25% of people but usually doesn’t cause symptoms.
  • PFO can be significant in conditions like cryptogenic stroke and migraines, and recent trials show that closing it through a procedure may be better than just medication for preventing strokes in specific patients.
  • The effectiveness of closure for other issues related to PFO, like decompression sickness and migraines, is still being studied, and the review will cover the current understanding of these aspects.
