Diabetes mellitus (DM) is on the rise in the population. Approximately 10% of adults suffer from DM. Over two-thirds of patients are over 60 years old, and thus it particularly affects patients who have to undergo total joint arthroplasty.

Influence of HLA-G 3' Untranslated Region Haplotypes and SNP +3422 Gene Variants as Host Genetic Factors on the Outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 Infection During Acute and Post-Acute Phases in a German Cohort.

HLA-G, an important immune-checkpoint (IC) molecule that exerts inhibitory signalling on immune effector cells, has been suggested to represent a key player in regulating the immune response to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Since specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the HLA-G 3'untranslated region (UTR), which arrange as haplotypes, are crucial for the regulation of HLA-G expression, we analysed the contribution of these genetic variants as host factors in SARS-CoV-2 infection during acute and post-acute phases. HLA-G gene polymorphisms in the 3'UTR were investigated by sequencing in an unvaccinated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cohort during acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (N = 505) and in the post-acute phase (N = 253).

In-situ-forming zwitterionic hydrogel does not ameliorate osteoarthritis in vivo, despite protective effects ex vivo.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases, with no effective therapeutic options available. In this study, we aimed to develop an interpenetrating, in-situ-forming hydrogel based on biocompatible and anti-fouling zwitterionic (ZI) polymers for early-stage OA treatment. We hypothesized that the anti-fouling properties of zwitterions could provide tissue protection, and the high charge density of these polymers would enhance tissue penetration and lubrication.

Prevalence of allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and wheezing at 15 and 22 years of age: the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR), atopic dermatitis (AD), and wheezing, and to describe their patterns of co-occurrence according to different characteristics in adolescence and early adulthood.

Methods: Cross-sectional analyses from the 15-year and 22-year follow-ups of the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort. The outcomes were assessed based on self-reported data, and the patterns of co-occurrence were determined using cluster analysis.
