Source localization of epileptic foci using ictal spatiotemporal dipole modeling (ISDM) yields reliable anatomic information in presurgical candidates. It requires substantial resources from EEG and neuroimaging laboratories. The profile and number of patients who may benefit from it are currently unknown.

Rationale: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) by intermittent and programmed electrical stimulation of the left vagus nerve in the neck, has become widely available. It is an effective treatment for patients with refractory epilepsy. Patients can be provided with a magnet that allows to deliver additional stimulation trains.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective alternative treatment for patients with refractory epilepsy. The generator produces intermittent stimulation trains and does not require patient intervention. Using currently available technology, continuous stimulation is incompatible with a reasonable battery life.
