Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatments by transporting seven clinically used photosensitizers out of cancer cells.* -
  • The research involved human breast cancer cell lines to assess how specific transport proteins (P-gp, ABCG2, MRP1) affect the accumulation of these photosensitizers, with some inhibitors showing effectiveness in blocking transport.* -
  • Key findings indicate that certain photosensitizers can be impacted by these transporters, leading to reduced efficacy in photodynamic therapy, while others, like temoporfin and talaporfin sodium, do not seem to be transported by ABCG2.*

Fluorescence-guided intervention can bolster standard therapies by detecting and treating microscopic tumors before lethal recurrence. Tremendous progress in photoimmunotherapy and nanotechnology has been made to treat metastasis. However, many are lost in translation due to heterogeneous treatment effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The MANTRA-PAF study compares the effectiveness of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA) to antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) for treating paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) as first-line therapy.
  • The results showed that, after 24 months, patients in the RFA group had significantly lower AF burden and a higher percentage of being free from AF compared to those using AADs and those who crossed over to other treatments.
  • Quality of life improved across all treatment groups with no significant differences in serious adverse events, suggesting that RFA could be a better first-line option for symptomatic PAF patients.

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is predominantly caused by a large number of various mutations in the genes encoding sarcomeric proteins. However, two prevalent founder mutations for HCM in the alpha-tropomyosin (TPM1-D175N) and myosin-binding protein C (MYBPC3-Q1061X) genes have previously been identified in eastern Finland.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of these founder mutations in a large population of patients with HCM from all over Finland.

Objective: The Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT-BPLA) showed that an amlodipine-based regimen prevented more cardiovascular events than an atenolol-based regimen in patients at high risk of hypertension. The basis of this difference is partly unknown and may be due to their divergent effects on the remodelling process of hypertensive heart disease.

Methods And Results: We measured plasma levels of aminoterminal propeptide of atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP) and aminoterminal propeptide of B-type natriuretic peptide and serum levels of the aminoterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP), aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen and type I collagen telopeptide in 93 patients randomized in the ASCOT study at baseline and after two and four years and compared them with echocardiographic parameters and blood pressure.
