Medical, subjective and objective forms of exercise dependence and the role of learning, cognitive and emotional biases.

Despite numerous benefits of regular exercise, research has demonstrated some people develop problematic exercise behaviour, with ongoing debates regarding the definition. This study defined three approaches: a traditional medical model including for example withdrawal symptoms; a subjective approach whereby individuals identify their own problematic exercise; and an objective perspective involving persistent exercise despite negative consequences. This cross-sectional study assessed the association between these three approaches in UK-based frequent exercisers ( = 139) alongside correlations with learning, cognitive and emotional biases (reward vs punishment sensitivity, delay discounting and sensation seeking).

Treatment With mTOR Inhibitors as Primary Immunosuppression After Combined Heart and Kidney Transplantation.

Aims: Sirolimus (SRL) mitigates cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) progression and confers renal protection after heart transplantation (HT). However, its safety and efficacy in patients undergoing combined heart and kidney transplantation (HKT) are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of conversion from calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) to SRL on CAV progression, renal function, and outcomes in HKT compared to isolated HT.

Power stabilization of a terahertz-frequency quantum-cascade laser using a photonic-integrated modulator.

We demonstrate a technique to stabilize the emission from a 3.4-THz quantum-cascade laser against power drifts, using a recently developed photonic integrated circuit (PIC) structure formed by coupling a racetrack resonator with a ridge waveguide. This structure enables a dynamic power-control range of ±15% and locking over >600 s using a proportional-integral control loop.

Tertiary-Amine-Functional Poly(arylene ether)s for Acid-Gas Separations.

Competitive sorption enables the emergent phenomenon of enhanced CO-based selectivities for gas separation membranes when using microporous polymers with primary amines. However, strong secondary forces in these polymers through hydrogen bonding results in low solvent solubility, precluding standard solution processing approaches to form these polymers into membrane films. Herein, we circumvent these manufacturing constraints while maintaining competitive-sorption enhancements by synthesizing eight representative microporous poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) with tertiary amines.

Novel use of adjuvant proton beam therapy in patient with pelvic renal transplant diagnosed with stage IB3 cervical adenocarcinoma.

Cervical adenocarcinoma is the second most common histology of cervical cancer and treatment can involve surgery, radiotherapy, systemic therapy, and any combination of the three. Photon external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy have been the mainstay of radiation treatment options for cervical cancer. Here, we report a case of a 41-year-old patient who had a prior renal transplant and was diagnosed with early-stage, intermediate-risk adenocarcinoma treated with modified radical hysterectomy plus adjuvant proton-beam therapy and vaginal brachytherapy.
