First record of epizootic ulcerative syndrome from the Upper Congo catchment: An outbreak in the Bangweulu swamps, Zambia.

We report on the first outbreak of epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) amongst wild fish populations in the Bangweulu swamps, an inland delta, in the north of Zambia during 2014. The area supports a large and diverse fish fauna related to, but distinct from, that of the Zambezi River system where EUS outbreaks have occurred since 2006. A sizeable artisanal fishery, based on extensive fish weirs, is sustained by the annual flooding of the swamps, and observations of the disease outbreak by fishermen were recorded.

Bolo disease: a bacteriological survey.

A total of 718 sheep, 381 severely and 190 mildly affected with Bolo disease as well as 147 visibly unaffected animals emanating from 15 farms in the Stutterheim and Cathcart districts in the eastern Cape were subjected to bacteriological examination of skin surfaces and wool specimens. Altogether, 1,168 specimens were examined. These included skin swabs, skin scrapings and wool samples.

Bolo disease: a specific, localised skin disease of woolled sheep.

Bolo disease is limited to Merino and Döhne merino sheep in the Stutterheim and Cathcart districts of the eastern Cape Province. It occurs under natural grazing conditions regardless of the season of the year and the condition of the natural grazing. Ewes and wethers are most frequently affected.

The starch digestion test in the horse.

Variable results were obtained when the starch digestion test was carried out on a suspected case of malassimilation in a horse. In order to re-evaluate this test, 15 starch digestion tests were carried out using 4 horses. Results showed a marked variation in the increase in plasma glucose levels between individual horses and especially between poor and good condition horses when the dose of starch was based on body mass.
