This study reports the optimized molecular structures, vibrational frequencies including Infrared intensities and Raman activities, corresponding vibrational assignments, (1)H and (13)C NMR chemical shifts, the magnitudes of the JCH and JCC coupling constants, Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, thermodynamic properties and atomic charges of the title compounds, α,α,α-trifluoro-3, -p and o-nitrotoluene, in the ground state by means of the density functional theory (DFT) with the standard B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) method and basis set combination for the first time. Theoretical vibrational spectra were interpreted by normal coordinate analysis based on scaled density functional force field. The results show that the vibrational frequencies and chemical shifts calculated were obtained to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Plasma fibrinogen-like protein 2 levels in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Background/aims: Fibrinogen-like protein 2 (fgl2), has recently been identified as a new member of the fibrinogen-like family of proteins. In this study we assayed plasma levels of fgl2 in patients with biopsy proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and examined their association with clinical, biochemical and histological phenotypes.

Methodology: Levels of plasma fgl2 were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and compared between the study groups.

Semaphorin 7A promotes angiogenesis in an experimental corneal neovascularization model.

Purpose: To characterize the involvement of Semaphorin 7A (Sema7a) in corneal neovascularization (NV).

Methods: We generated anti-Sema7A antibodies to detect protein expression in corneal fibroblasts. Corneal fibroblast cells were cultured, stimulated with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF or FGF-2), immunostained with anti-Sema7A antibodies, and visualized by confocal microscopy.

Effect of Thymoquinone on Oxidative Stress in Escherichia coli-Induced Pyelonephritis in Rats.

Recurrent and Massive Life Threatening Epistaxis due to Nasal Heroin Usage.

Epistaxis, active bleeding from the nose, is a common ear nose and throat emergency, and can be severe or even fatal. We report a severe life threatening recurrent massive nasal bleeding caused by intranasal heroin use that has not hitherto been reported in the English literature. A 24-year-old male who took heroin several times nasally presented with massive nasal bleeding.

Background: The mechanisms responsible for the accelerated cardiovascular disease in diabetes, as well as the increased hypertrophic effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) under hyperglycemic condition, are not very clear. Evidences show that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and protein kinase C (PKC) play a critical role in this effect. In our study, we examined the role of PKC and PDGF receptor on JAK2 and STAT1 phosphorylation under high glucose (HG) condition (25 mmol/L) in response to Ang II in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC).

Asystole after the first dose of ceftriaxone.

The incidence of ceftriaxone-related hypersensitivity skin reactions is between 1% and 3%, whereas anaphylaxis is rare. To the best of our knowledge, the following case is the first report of asystole after the administration of single-dose ceftriaxone. A 55-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department because of high fever, abdominal pain, dysuria, and weakness.

Comparison of anthropometric indices in predicting metabolic syndrome components in children.

Background: The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) defines metabolic syndrome among children. In addition to the abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥90 percentile of locally representative sample), the risk criteria for metabolic syndrome includes elevated blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and elevated fasting glucose. In this study, we compared the association of anthropometric indices with metabolic syndrome risk criteria in 9-year-old children.

Revisiting traditional risk factors for rejection and graft loss after kidney transplantation.

Single-antigen bead (SAB) testing permits reassessment of immunologic risk for kidney transplantation. Traditionally, high panel reactive antibody (PRA), retransplant and deceased donor (DD) grafts have been associated with increased risk. We hypothesized that this risk was likely mediated by (unrecognized) donor-specific antibody (DSA).

The effect of CYP1A1 and GSTM1 gene polymorphisms in bladder cancer development in a Turkish population.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association of the CYP1A1 Ile462Val and GSTM1 null polymorphisms with the risk of developing bladder cancer in a Turkish population.

Patients And Methods: The study constituted 176 patients with bladder cancer and 97 healthy individuals. Evaluation of CYP1A1 Ile462Val gene polymorphism was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP).

Diversity of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor genes in Southern Turkey.

Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) are a family of inhibitory and activating receptors expressed by natural killer (NK) cells and regulate NK cells' activity. KIR genes are highly polymorphic markers, characterized by a wide diversity, and can therefore be considered as good population genetic markers. The aim of this study was to determine KIR gene frequencies, ratios of haplotypes and genotypes in Southern Turkey and also to compare the data with other worldwide populations studied previously.

The effects of continuous positive airway pressure therapy on mean platelet volume in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

Previous studies have reported increased platelet activation and aggregation in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment has been shown to decrease platelet activation. We aimed to study the effects of nasal CPAP therapy has on MPV values in patients with severe OSA.

Pleomorphic adenomas recurrences within the parapharyngeal space.

This study was undertaken to evaluate and concentrate on the recurrent pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) of the parapharyngeal space. The records of 9 patients treated for recurrent PAs occupying parapharyngeal space were retrospectively reviewed. The study population comprised 6 women and 3 men with a mean age of 51 (range, 35-79 years).

SIRT1 as a potential therapeutic target for treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Sirtuins are members of the silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) family, a group of Class III histone/protein deacetylases. There are 7 different sirtuins in mammals (SIRT1-7), of which SIRT1 is the best known and most studied. SIRT1 is responsible for the regulation of protein activation by means of deacetylating a variety of proteins that play important roles in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases.

Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor genes in patients with breast cancer.

Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) contribute to the pathogenesis of diverse kind of diseases. Previous studies have shown associations between KIR genes, their ligands and either protection or susceptibility to leukemias or virally associated solid tumors. However, the possible roles of KIR gene polymorphisms in the development of breast cancer remain largely unknown.

Serum levels of hepcidin in patients with biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Background: Research suggests the presence of mild-to-moderate iron overload in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The role played by hepcidin, the master regulatory hormone of systemic iron metabolism, in the pathogenesis of NAFLD remains controversial. The aims of this study were to: (1) Evaluate serum hepcidin levels in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and age- and sex-matched controls and (2) identify the potential associations of hepcidin with the clinical and biochemical characteristics of the study participants.
