Background: Asthma is one of the most common causes of chronic respiratory disease, and countries with low socioeconomic status have both a high prevalence of asthma and asthma-related death.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to determine socioeconomic levels of asthmatic patients according to a national database and investigate the effects of social markers on disease control in our region.

Methods: This is an analysis of data from 2053 adult asthma patients from a multicentre chart study in Turkey.

Smartphone accelerometers as tools to study the effect of socioeconomic disparities in neurosurgical outcomes: a multi-institutional retrospective analysis.

Objective: Smartphones and wearable devices can be effective tools to objectively assess patient mobility and well-being before and after spine surgery. In this retrospective observational study, the authors investigated the relationship between these longitudinal perioperative patient activity data and socioeconomic and demographic correlates, assessing whether smartphone-captured metrics may allow neurosurgeons to distinguish intergroup patterns.

In this study, we investigated the effects of SLM through different pathways in rats subjected to experimental ovarian ischemia/reperfusion (I/R).

Evaluation of ixabepilone efficacy and tolerability in metastatic breast cancer.

Although microtubule inhibitors are generally used in advanced stages, they provide the opportunity to prolong survival as an alternative when medical oncologists have difficulty finding options in their patients, who typically have a poor prognosis and most of whom are unresponsive to treatment. Otomycosis risk after non-suppurative middle ear surgery.

Methods: In this retrospective study, 409 out of 523 patients met the inclusion criteria. 44 patients diagnosed with otomycosis CNSOM were analyzed.

Evaluation of Long-Term Lymphedema Rate in Patients With Subclinical Lymphedema Diagnosed in the Preoperative Period via Bioimpedance.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between subclinical lymphedema identified prior to surgical intervention and clinical lymphedema observed in the late period, the incidence of lymphedema in our cohort, and the associated risk factors.

Materials And Methods: This prospective study was conducted with early-stage breast cancer patients who had been enrolled in a previous study. For diagnosing lymphedema, physical examination, L-Dex® score, and circumferential measurement was used.

Prevalence of anomalies and variants of coronary arteries: A single center study by coronary CT angiography.

Purpose: It has been demonstrated that the coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) are generally asymptomatic. However, some cases can cause severe life threatening events. As coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has emerged as a non-invasive alternative to invasive coronary angiography for the evaluation of coronary anatomy, the prevalence of CAAs in CCTA may more closely reflect the true prevalence in the general population.

Applying a three-dimensional curved lumbar spine model to simulate surgery for training residents in pedicle screw insertion.

Purpose: The challenges of spinal surgery can be overcome by deeply understanding the anatomical and surgical complexities of the region through the use of model simulators. This study investigates the impact of digitally designed simulators, specifically lumbar spinal models with abnormal curvature, on preoperative planning and their effectiveness as training tools. The study addresses challenges in spine surgery, such as unique deformities, classification issues, and associated abdominal structure abnormalities.

Mobile app communication to prevent ER visits post-circumcision: a prospective observational study.

Purpose: To assess the impact of a mobile phone application facilitating real-time visual and verbal communication on reducing emergency-room admissions following circumcision.

Methods: This prospective observational study included circumcision surgeries performed by one surgeon at our clinic between April and June 2024, after obtaining parental consent. Parents were divided into two groups: one received a mobile app phone number, while the other did not.

Purpose: Human epidermal growth factor-2 (HER-2) targeted drugs are used in only HER-2 overexpressed cancers. However, only a small portion of these cancer types are HER-2 overexpressed. In this study, we aimed to upregulate HER-2 receptors in MCF-7 breast cancer and HT-29 colon cancer cell cultures, which these cells are not HER-2 upregulated in natural status.

Therapeutic potential of adult stem cells-derived mitochondria transfer combined with curcumin administration into ARPE-19 cells in age-related macular degeneration model.

Objective: Mitochondria transfer from human Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hWJ-MSCs-mt) and human endometrium-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hE-MSCs-mt), along with curcumin, were explored as potential treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) caused by mitochondrial inefficiency, using a retinal model to assess impacts of curcumin and hWJ-MSCs-mt or hE-MSCs-mt on AMD.

Methods: ARPE-19 cells established an in vitro AMD model. Cells were exposed to 0-50 μM curcumin for 24 hours to determine optimal concentration by assessing their viability.

Noninvasive Assessment of Liver Fibrosis in Patients With Iron Overload.

Objective: We assessed the diagnostic performance of ultrasound two-dimensional shear wave elastography (US 2D-SWE) to predict clinically significant fibrosis (CSF) in patients with serologic iron overload (SIO) and the subgroup with histologic liver iron overload (LIO).

Methods: A single-center retrospective cross-sectional study of adults with SIO (serum ferritin ≥ 200 ng/mL in females and ≥ 300 ng/mL in males) and suspected chronic liver disease with nonfocal liver biopsy results and US 2D-SWE exams within 1 year was performed. Histopathological fibrosis stage ≥2 and liver iron ≥2+ was considered CSF and LIO, respectively.

The "July Effect" scrutinized: A coarsened-exact match analysis of lumbar fusion outcomes during resident transition.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess for a "July Effect" by comparing exact matched patients undergoing single-level spinal fusions in July or in the latter half of the academic year.

Methods: Data from 2338 patients who underwent single-level, posterior-only lumbar fusion at a single, multicenter university hospital system were retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcomes were 90-day unplanned hospital readmissions, Emergency Department (ED) evaluations, reoperations, non-home discharge, and all-cause mortality.

Investigation of oral health findings and genotype correlations in osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta, a common genetic connective tissue disorder affecting bone with multisystemic implications, is caused by genomic alterations at various levels that disrupt the biosynthesis stages of collagen Type I. This study evaluated the intraoral and clinical findings of 43 OI cases in relation to genetic variants, aiming to contribute new insights into the roles of collagen and non-collagen genes in the oral-dental pathology of OI. Significant associations were found between OI variants and dental anomalies such as dentinogenesis imperfecta, enamel hypoplasia, taurodontism, and hypodontia.

Opioid prescribing guidelines for spine surgery patients: a multisite analysis of guideline implementation and monitoring with an automated text messaging platform.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the effect of opioid prescribing guideline implementation for elective spine surgery cases on prescribing and consumption behaviors in a multisite academic hospital system. The effectiveness of an automated text messaging system as a tool to monitor postoperative opioid use and pain outcomes and inform guideline development and deployment is also evaluated.

Methods: The authors conducted a prospective study of postoperative opioid use behaviors and patient-reported outcomes for 2101 elective spine surgery cases between December 2018 and March 2022, prior to and following the implementation of opioid-prescribing guidelines in February 2021 at three urban hospital sites within a large academic health system.

Background: Yes-associated protein (YAP) is implicated in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study aims to investigate the abundance of YAP and its inactive form, phosphorylated YAP (p-YAP), in fetal human lung tissues from CDH cases compared to control cases at mid-gestation and end-gestation.

Methods: Immunofluorescence was performed to assess the abundance of YAP and p-YAP in lung tissues from human CDH and control fetuses who died from causes other than CDH.

Factors influencing the prescription of add-on long-acting muscarinic antagonists in real-world asthma management: Insights from a national registry.

Current guidelines recommend adding long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) in patients with uncontrolled asthma, despite the use of moderate to high doses of inhaled steroid-long-acting beta agonists (ICS/LABA). This study aims to analyze the factors related to the prescription of add-on LAMA in clinical practice for asthma patients, shedding light on physicians' preferences. This study included adult asthma patients on add-on LAMA and ICS/LABA monitored for at least one year in a national registry comprising 2053 asthmatics.

Sinapic acid alleviates glutamate-induced excitotoxicity by inhibiting neuroinflammation and endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway in C6 glioma cells.

Sinapic acid (SA) is a polyphenol compound derived from hydroxycinnamic acid found in various foods such as cereals and vegetables and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. However, its effects on glutamate-induced excitotoxicity, which is important in neurodegenerative diseases, have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the effect of SA on glutamate excitotoxicity and the possible role of proinflammatory cytokines and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway.

Clinical Features and Natural Course of Hidradenitis Suppurativa in Turkey: A Multicenter Study.

Introduction: The natural history, the progression of a disease process in an individual over time, has not yet been fully elucidated in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). In this large multicenter study, we aimed to investigate the natural history of HS and its gender differences.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 827 patients.
