The effect of different surface treatments on roughness and bond strength in low fusing ceramics.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatments (air abrasion, acid etching, and laser irradiation) on the surface roughness and bond strength of a low fusing ceramic. Thirty-six discs of low fusing ceramic (Finesse, Ceramco) were prepared (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Specimens were divided into three groups (n = 12), and the following treatments were performed: Air abrasion with alumina particles (50 μm), acid etching with 5% HF and Nd:YAG laser irradiation (distance: 1 mm, 100 mJ, 20 Hz, 2 W, and 141.

Acne rosacea associated imatinib mesylate in a gastrointestinal stromal tumor patient.

In this study, we mapped a previously unknown autosomal-recessive nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss locus (DFNB91) to chromosome 6p25 in a consanguineous Turkish family.

Genetic and historic evidence for climate-driven population fragmentation in a top cetacean predator: the harbour porpoises in European water.

Recent climate change has triggered profound reorganization in northeast Atlantic ecosystems, with substantial impact on the distribution of marine assemblages from plankton to fishes. However, assessing the repercussions on apex marine predators remains a challenging issue, especially for pelagic species. In this study, we use Bayesian coalescent modelling of microsatellite variation to track the population demographic history of one of the smallest temperate cetaceans, the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) in European waters.

Serum M30 levels are associated with survival in advanced gastric carcinoma patients.

Background: Cytokeratin 18 (CK-18) is a cytoskeleton protein of epithelial cells which are released into the circulation during necrotic or apoptotic cell death. M30 detects caspase-cleaved neo-epitope of CK-18; whereas M 65 measures whole length intact protein. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum M65 and M30 levels in patients with gastric carcinoma.

In vivo confocal microscopic findings of 2 patients with Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy.

Purpose: To describe the clinical and in vivo confocal microscopic findings of the cornea in 2 patients with Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II Rostock Cornea Module.

Methods: Two women 25 and 33 years of age underwent ophthalmologic assessment, including fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, electroretinography, and in vivo confocal microscopy.

Results: Slit-lamp examination revealed crystalline deposits at the superior limbus of the cornea in both of the subjects.

Four different malignancies in one patient: a case report.

Cancer survivors have a higher risk of new primary cancer, in the same or in another organ, than the general population. We report a 78-year-old women who has metachronous quadruple adenocarcinoma, includes bilateral breast cancer, ovarian cancer and retroperitoneal neuroendocrine carcinoma. The development of second cancer in cancer survivors can be expected but third or higher order malignancies are rare.

Synchronous testicular liposarcoma and prostate adenocarcinoma: a case report.

Prostate adenocarcinoma is the most common malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in men. Testicular liposarcomas are uncommon soft tissue neoplasms. We report coexistence of prostate cancer and testicular liposarcoma in a 69 year-old-man because while orchiectomy endications are decreasing day by day, these second malignancies should not be missed.

The effect of bevacizumab on serum soluble FAS/FASL and TRAIL and its receptors (DR4 and DR5) in metastatic colorectal cancer.

Purpose: Bevacizumab-based chemotherapy has become the standard of care in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC). We aimed to measure the levels of serum soluble FAS, FASL, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), and its death receptors DR4 and DR5 in MCRC patients and to define prognostic significance of these parameters in response to bevacizumab in these patients.

Patients And Methods: The levels of these parameters in serum samples were quantified by a commercially available ELISA kit in 31 MCRC patients before and after 2 cycles of therapy and 25 healthy controls.

Primary pure small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder that responded to carboplatin plus etoposide: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary pure small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCCB) is an extremely rare tumor and accounts for less than 1% of all malignant tumors of the urinary bladder. This tumor exhibits more aggressive behavior than bladder transitional cell carcinoma. Unfortunately, optimal treatment strategy for this malignancy is still unknown.

Determining Candida spp. incidence in denture wearers.

The aim of this study was to determine Candida spp. incidence in the oral cavity of denture wearers and characterize predisposing factors in denture-related stomatitis (DRS). Three groups of denture wearers and a control group were evaluated for DRS according to Newton's classification.

A preliminary trial to determine whether prevention of dark adaptation affects the course of early diabetic retinopathy.

Unlabelled: This study was designed to determine whether a new form of treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) was acceptable to patients and whether reduction in the maximal activity of rods in diabetes could affect the progress of DR.

Methods: In 12 patients, trans-lid retinal illumination of one eye was employed during sleep to prevent the depolarisation of rods and thus reduce their metabolic activity.

Techniques: A headband was used to place a source of chemical light over one eye, with its fellow as a control.

Antibody affinity maturation in vitro using unconjugated peptide antigen.

Selection of antibody library in vitro is almost always performed on a certain solid-phase with immobilized antigen. However, for the selection of small molecule binders, conjugation of the antigen to a carrier molecule is indispensable, which often leads to the selection of unwanted binders such as conjugate-binders or those with insufficient specificity. Here we describe a rapid and efficient way to improve the affinity of an anti-small molecule antibody without antigen derivatization.

Serum nitric oxide levels in patients with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an acute disease affecting multiple organ systems and is characterized by fever and haemorrhages. The pathogenesis of CCHF has not been well described. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important regulator of a number of different biological processes and can participate in antimicrobial defence.

Effects of laser and acid etching and air abrasion on mineral content of dentin.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mineral content of dentin prepared using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser at four different power settings, acid etching, and air abrasion. The study teeth comprised 35 molars which were randomly divided into seven equal groups. The occlusal third of the crowns were cut with a slow-speed diamond saw.

Is long-term hunger (Ramadan model) a risk factor for acute appendicitis?

Objective: To investigate whether long-term hunger and the changes in nutritional routines during Ramadan constitute risk factors in acute appendicitis on the model of Ramadan fasting in this study.

Methods: This retrospective study was carried out in 2 different hospitals (Istanbul Haydarpasa Numune Training and Research Hospital and Kars State Hospital, Kars, Turkey) between January 2004 and December 2007. The data obtained from the patients were classified according to age, gender, age group, and pathological characteristics of the appendix.

Ocular changes in primary hypothyroidism.

Background: To determine the ocular changes related to hypothyrodism in newly diagnosed patients without orbitopathy.

Findings: Thirty-three patients diagnosed to have primary overt hypothyroidism were enrolled in the study. All subjects were assigned to underwent central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber volume, depth and angle measurements with the Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam, Oculus) and cup to disc ratio (C/D), mean retinal thickness and mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements with optical coherence tomography (OCT) in addition to ophthalmological examination preceeding the replacement therapy and at the 1(st), 3(rd )and 6(th )months of treatment.

Prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the Black Sea Region, Turkey, and investigation of the related factors with chronic kidney disease.

We aimed to assess the prevalence of CKD in the Black Sea Region, Turkey, and to evaluate any relationship between age, gender, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and CKD. This study was conducted in 70 different areas in Tokat Province in the Black Sea Region, in the northern part of Turkey. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated from the serum creatinine using MDRD formulas.

Peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis: adherence to guidelines and effects of educational intervention.

Background: This study was aimed to determine the propriety of perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis, to evaluate the effects of a training intervention on correction.

Methods: This prospective educational intervention study was performed on clean, clean-contaminated, and contaminated wounds in elective procedures. The accuracy of the antimicrobial prophylaxis was analyzed according to international guidelines.

Evaluation of the association of serum levels of hyaluronic acid, sICAM-1, sVCAM-1, and VEGF-A with mortality and prognosis in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Background: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral hemorrhagic disease. Pathogenesis of the disease has not been well described yet. A well-known pathogenic feature of CCHF virus is its capability to damage endothelium.

Outcome of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in children having complex stones.

Objectives: To review our experiences with percutaneous nephrolithotomy in children with complex renal calculi.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the records of 31 children with complex renal calculi who were treated by percutaneous nephrolithotomy at 2 hospitals of our university between June 2003 and June 2008. The mean age of the patients was 10.

Bevacizumab plus irinotecan-based therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer patients previously treated with oxaliplatin-based regimens.

Background: Treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) previously exposed to oxaliplatin-based regimen is challenging. Efficacy and toxicity of bevacizumab plus irinotecan-based regimens were assessed in the second-line treatment of MCRC patients.

Patients And Methods: Forty patients with a median age of 53 years (range, 31-75) were retrospectively evaluated.

Tigecycline use in two cases with multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii meningitis.

The treatment of post-surgical meningitis due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii is a therapeutic dilemma. The cases of two patients with MDR A. baumannii meningitis secondary to surgical site infections, successfully treated with combination regimens including tigecycline, are presented.
