Recently, research on blockchain applications in the healthcare research domain has attracted increasing attention due to its strong potential. However, the existing literature reveals limited studies on defining use cases of blockchain in clinical research, categorizing and comparing available studies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the significant potential and use cases of blockchain in clinical research through a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR).

Background Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Recent findings have made the relationship between the inhibition of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme and cognitive functions an important research topic. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the association between DPP-4 inhibitor use and cognitive functions, serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, compared with the patients who only use metformin treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared the effectiveness of high-power holmium YAG laser and ballistic lithotripsy for removing large renal stones (>20 mm) during mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) in 880 patients.
  • - Results showed similar stone-free rates (92.5% for laser vs. 90.2% for ballistic) and complication rates, but laser lithotripsy had a significantly shorter average surgery time (40.1 mins vs. 55.6 mins).
  • - The conclusion emphasizes that while the laser technique is faster, ballistic lithotripsy is also a safe and effective alternative, especially in places where the laser is not available.

Background/aim: The Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene codes for protein pyrin, which is among the modulators of inflammasome activity in innate immune cells. It was suggested that there is a relation between MEFV variations and inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate MEFV gene variations in the patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the effect of kinesiophobia on musculoskeletal pain, physical activity levels, and gestational weight gain in pregnant women. One hundred and sixty-three pregnant women participated in the study by completing a personal characteristics information form along with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire, and the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The results showed a weak negative correlation between total physical activity scores and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia scores ( = .

This study evaluated the clinical performance of low-shrinkage bioactive resin composite compared with a conventional nanohybrid resin composite. A total of 35 patients (18 males, 17 females; mean age: 29±9 years old) received, randomly, 35 pairs of fillings restored with either low-shrinkage bioactive material employing Giomer filler technology (Beautifil II LS, Shofu Inc, Kyoto, Japan) or conventional nanohybrid resin composite (Clearfil Majesty Posterior, Kuraray, Japan) in Class I and Class II cavities. Two operators made all the restorations using the corresponding adhesive resins: FL-Bond II (Shofu Inc) and Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray), according to each manufacturer's instructions.

Background: Universities are vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks, making them ideal environments to study transmission dynamics and evaluate mitigation and surveillance measures. Here, we analyze multimodal COVID-19-associated data collected during the 2020-2021 academic year at Colorado Mesa University and introduce a SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and response framework.

Methods: We analyzed epidemiological and sociobehavioral data (demographics, contact tracing, and WiFi-based co-location data) alongside pathogen surveillance data (wastewater and diagnostic testing, and viral genomic sequencing of wastewater and clinical specimens) to characterize outbreak dynamics and inform policy.

Three fungi not previously reported on desiccated human remains were identified on cadavers at the Forensic Investigation Research Station (FIRS) in Whitewater, Colorado. The location of the FIRS provides the unique opportunity to observe the stages of decomposition in a high desert environment. The two cadavers used in the study were in the late stages of decomposition (PMI of approximately 1520 and 1820 days) to the point of desiccation and had developed an extensive black crust on the skin that remained.

Background: Peripartum hysterectomy (PPH), which means surgical removal of the uterus during pregnancy or postpartum period, is a life-saving procedure performed as a last resort to stop obstetric serious bleeding.

Aim: Evaluation of the prevalence, risk factors, indications, associated complications, and neonatal outcomes of PPH performed in our clinic.

Patients And Methods: A total of 35 patients who underwent PPH in our clinic between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed retrospectively.

Introduction: recent studies indicate that diet increases T2DM risk via inflammation. Fetuin-A, identified as an acute-phase protein, plays a role in insulin resistance and is an independent predictor of type-2 diabetes. Objectives: the present study aimed to examine the association between diet and T2DM risk, and whether said association is mediated by fetuin-A, and to determine the effect of fetuin-A on T2DM risk.

Background: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease accompanied by pancreatic inflammation characterized by acinar cell damage and leukocyte infiltration in the tissue. At present, mortality and morbidity rates are high despite the current treatment of pancreatitis; therefore, new studies and treatment studies are needed. In this study, the effects of alpha-tocopherol on different doses of L-arginine-induced experimental acute pancreatitis model were investigated.

Background And Aims: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a noninvasive complementary therapy for postoperative pain management. The effect of TENS on quality of recovery (QoR) and pain treatment in the early postoperative period is not well documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of TENS on postoperative QoR and pain in patients who had undergone a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TAH + BSO).

Background: Osteoporosis (OP) is the most common type of systemic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-structure deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and fracture risk. Nitric oxide (NO), produced by the enzyme endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in endothelial cells, has considerable effects on bone cell function. The objective of this case-control study was to investigate the potential association between the eNOS gene Variable Number Tandem Repeat (VNTR) variant and susceptibility of OP, in Turkish postmenopausal female patients.

The calmodulin-binding transcriptional activator (CAMTA) family was first observed in tobacco (NtER1) during a screening for the CaM-binding proteins, which are known to be one of the fast response stress proteins. Due to the increased importance of plant transcription factors in recent years; genome-wide identification of CAMTA genes has been performed in several plant species, except for Phaseolus vulgaris. Therefore, our aim was to identify and characterize CAMTA genes in P.
