Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome associated with consumption coagulopathy: treatment with interferon.

The blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare vascular malformation syndrome with cutaneous and visceral lesions frequently associated with serious, even fatal bleeding. No systemic therapy is currently available. We report here a case with disseminated skin and gastrointestinal venous malformations and findings of disseminated intravascular coagulation that was treated with interferon beta.

Shear flocculation of celestite with sodium oleate and tallow amine acetate: effects of cations.

Sodium oleate and tallow amine acetate (TAA) were used as surfactants for the shear flocculation of celestite. The shear-flocculation power values obtained with sodium oleate were higher than those obtained with TAA in terms of the concentrations used in the shear-flocculation experiments. In addition, sodium oleate and TAA were more effective on the celestite suspension in the pH ranges of 7-11 and 6-10, respectively.

Conversion and somatization disorders; dissociative symptoms and other characteristics.

Objective: There is a difference in classification of conversion disorder in ICD-10 and DSM-IV. Conversion disorder is included in dissociative disorders in ICD-10. In view of this, we aimed to clarify this discrepancy in the classification of this diagnosis.

Psychiatric symptoms in Turkish infertile women.

The aims of this study were to determine the psychiatric symptoms which may develop because of infertility in Turkish women and to find out the precipitating factors. Fifty women with primary infertility and 50 health controls were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger Stait-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and Symptom Checklist scale. They were also asked to describe the reactions received from their husband, husbands' families and social group because of infertility.

Conversion disorder and its subtypes: a need for a reclassification.

Four subtypes of conversion disorder were described in DSM-IV. There are few publications concerning studies aimed at separating the subtypes of the conversion disorder. Usually, pseudoseizures are in focus and attempts are made to differentiate these seizures from other disorders.

Seropositivity of Epstein-Barr virus in Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey.

In the present study, we have investigated the seropositivity of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and the epidemiological factors affecting this seropositivity. A total of 540 subjects living in central Elazig Province and its surroundings were enrolled in the study. IgG antibodies against capsid antigen of EBV (anti-VCA IgG) were determined by ELISA.

Synovial sarcoma of childhood and adolescence: a multicenter, multivariate analysis of outcome.

Purpose: To identify prognostic factors related to outcome in 219 children and adolescents with synovial sarcoma.

The use of the ipsilateral versus contralateral pedicle and vertical versus horizontal flap inset models in TRAM flap breast reconstruction: the aesthetic outcome.

The use of an ipsilateral or a contralateral rectus abdominis muscle as a pedicle and comparison of their advantages and disadvantages in TRAM flap breast reconstruction have been reported in the literature. In our clinical experience with 22 pedicled TRAM flap breast reconstructions, the use of either an ipsilateral or contralateral pedicle was found to be equivocal regarding the flap viability and the aesthetic outcome. Thus, it seems better to decide their use according to the needs of an individual patient.

Guaiacylglycerol-7'-O-methyl 8'-vanillic acid ether and related compounds from Boreava orientalis.

The threo and erythro forms of guaiacylglycerol-7'-O-methyl 8'-vanillic acid ethers, threo and erythro guaiacylglycerol 8'-vanillin ethers, and threo guaiacylglycerol 8'-(4-hydroxymethyl-2-methoxyphenyl) ether have been isolated from fruits of Boreava orientalis. Structural determinations were made on the basis of UV, MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data, including two-dimensional shift correlation. The relative configurations were assigned on the basis of 1H-NMR chemical shifts.

Bacteremia in childhood cancer.

Infection-related mortality affects the overall survival rates of children who are receiving treatment for cancer. The leading cause of mortality is bacteremia and sepsis related to it in febrile neutropenic patients. All positive blood cultures of febrile neutropenic patients treated in the Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Cerrahpasa Medical School, between January 1995 and January 2001 were reviewed.

The relationship between QT dispersion and left and right ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with myocardial infarction.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between electrical dispersion and impairment of ventricular filling in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI).

Methods: Thirty patients with recent myocardial infarction (17 patients with anterior and 13 patients with inferior MI) were included in the study. QT dispersion (QTd) was defined as maximum minus minimum QT interval durations.

Unlabelled: A boy with no previous history of bleeding presented with ecchymoses and splenomegaly. He was followed up for thrombocytopenia and micromegakaryocytes for 20 months till clinically malignancy was diagnosed. Micromegakaryocytes must always be treated with suspicion, as they may provide an important clue for dyshematopoesis.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis after the use of high-dose cytosine arabinoside.

We report a fatal case of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) resulting from a high dose of cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C). A 13-year-old girl with acute lymphocytic leukemia was treated according to the protocol of the BFM Group (BFM-95, HRG). On the fifth day after administration of a high dose of ARA-C (2 g/m2 intravenously every 12 hours), she developed bullous lesions on the hands and soles that disseminated, evolving to necrosis, sepsis, and death on the 22nd day.

Multidisciplinary approach to Wilms' tumor: 18 years of experience.

Background: The aim was to evaluate the characteristics of Wilms' tumor and the results of combined modality treatment obtained in our center in Turkey.

Methods: From January 1978 to December 1996, 106 patients with Wilms' tumor were diagnosed. Of these 106 patients, 61 were male and 45 were female (M/F = 1,35); the median age at diagnosis was 39 months.
