The LC(50) of duroquinone was about 25 times lower in a Chinese hamster V79-derived cell line which was genetically engineered for the expression of human cytochrome P-450 reductase (V79-MZ-hOR) than in the parental V79-MZ cell line. Reduction of the O(2) concentration in the atmosphere from 21 to 5% decreased the cytotoxicity of duroquinone by a factor of 4. The addition of duroquinone to the homogenate of V79-MZ-hOR cells led to the formation of Superoxide radicals, as demonstrated by the formation of formazan from nitroblue tetrazolium, and inhibition of this reaction in the presence of Superoxide dismutase.

The effects of 5-vinyloxazolidine-2-thione (VOT), 1-cyano-3-butene (CYB) and various isothiocyanates on parameters of hepatic phase I and phase II biotransformation were investigated in male rats after oral treatment for 3 consecutive days. The compounds with the exception of CYB caused increases in liver weight and glutathione S-transferase activity. Cytochrome P-450 level and monooxygenase activities were decreased by the isothiocyanates and CYB.

The effects of a fatty acids mixture containing nearly 50% odd numbered fatty acids (PC-Säure) were studied in a subchronic toxicity test in male and female rats. The animals received PC-Säure in their diet at levels of 0, 1.25, 2.

The effect of cadmium on the urinary excretion of glucose, creatinine and enzymes has been studied in adult male and female rats given the substance (70, 140 and 280 mg/kg food) for 4 weeks. Renal function tests and gel electrophoresis of urinary proteins were conducted simultaneously. Sex-dependent differences were demonstrated with regard to sensitivity of several kidney parameters and their predictive character of a possible chronic nephrotoxicity.

Oral administrations of azoxybenzene (0, 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg b.w.) over a period up to 7 days caused a time and dose dependent decrease in the amount of cytochrome P-450 as well as in the ability of aminopyrine-N-demethylation and aniline hydroxylation in the hepatic microsomes of male and female rats.

Action of cadmium on microsomal liver enzymes of rat was tested by determination of aniline-hydroxylase and aminopyrine-N-demethylase activities as well as of the cytochrome-P-450 level and measurement of hexobarbital sleep. Rats which had 0.88 mg/kg body weight, 4.
