Relationship between levels of DNA damage in lymphocytes and histopathological severity of chronic hepatitis C and various clinical forms of hepatitis B.

Background And Aim: A significant proportion of cancer is attributable to DNA damage caused by chronic infection and inflammation. Because both hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV, respectively) cause chronic infection and inflammatory disease, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether there is a difference in peripheral DNA damage in patients with chronic HCV compared with patients with chronic HBV; and whether there is an association in the level of peripheral DNA damage with a natural history of HBV infection.

Methods: Twenty patients with chronic hepatitis C, 20 patients with chronic hepatitis B, 11 patients with cirrhosis secondary to hepatitis B, 12 inactive hepatitis B s antigen (HBsAg) carriers and 21 healthy subjects were included in the study.

Objective: We examined the effect of breast milk on plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total peroxide (TP), and oxidative stress index (OSI), which are biomarkers of oxidative status.

Methods: Fifty-four healthy term infants 3 to 6 mo of age were fed breast milk or a cow's milk modified formula. Plasma TAC, vitamin C, albumin, bilirubin, and uric acid levels were measured as indexes of antioxidative markers.

Postoperative radiotherapy in the treatment of male breast carcinoma: a single institute experience.

Background: To evaluate the outcomes of radiation therapy treatment of male patients with breast cancer in our single institutional cohort and discover possible adverse prognostic factors.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 42 male patients (median age 55; range 33-77 years) with breast cancer. Patients were irradiated postoperatively in 2 Gy/fraction/day to chest wall +/- lymphatics.

We present the case of an 18-year-old man, who was admitted with an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) since 17 years old. He had symmetry and contamination obsessions and cleaning compulsions, and had been treated with fluoxetine 40 mg/day for 2 months. The patient was not taking additional psychotropic medication.

Management of sacrococcygeal chordomas.

A total of 16 patients in our clinic (six women, ten men; mean age 54.87 years, range 38-78 years) were diagnosed as having a sacrococcygeal chordoma. Pain was the presenting symptom in all patients.

The relationship between inflammation, oxidant stress and cardiovascular damage in children with chronic renal failure (CRF) has not previously been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate markers of oxidative stress, inflammation and early cardiovascular abnormalities. Therefore, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities; blood glutathione (GSH) and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels; C-reactive protein (CRP) and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha,); and left ventricular masses (LVM) and intima media thicknesses (IMT) were measured in children with CRF.

In this study, we aimed to assess NO level and activity of the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), in euthymic bipolar patients.

Massive uvula oedema during lithium therapy and resolution after lithium discontinuation.

Acute oedema of the uvula is relatively rare, and often idiopathic. There are only a few cases reported up to date. This is the first case of oedema in the uvula that occurred during lithium treatment of a patient with bipolar-I manic disorder.

Postoperative radiotherapy in cranial ganglioglioma.

We performed an institutional database search for patients with ganglioglioma in order to evaluate postoperative radiotherapy in the light of our experience. This search identified 5 patients with a mean age of 23.3 (range, 9-54 years) treated between April 1994 and April 2003.

Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a slowly progressive condition characterised by poorly reversible airflow limitation associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lung. The main causal factors of COPD are chronic oxidative stress as a result of long-term smoking, use of biomass fuels, and air pollution. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl presenting with spinal and leptomeningeal dissemination following several subtotal resections of cerebellar pilocytic astrocytomas.

External application of hypertonic salt solution for treatment of posttraumatic oedema.

In 20 New Zealand rabbits (two groups of 10 rabbits each), hind limb circumference and anterior compartment pressure were measured following ketamin anaesthesia (time zero). During the same anaesthesia, closed transverse proximal tibial shaft fractures were created in both groups. Twenty-four hours after the fractures, during a second anaesthesia, limb circumference and compartment pressure were measured as before, and fractured limbs were fixed to the rabbits' bodies.

Increased DNA damage and oxidative stress in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a chronic infectious and granulomatous disease caused by the Leishmania parasite that invades the skin. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) produced during an inflammatory response are an important part of host-defense strategies of organisms to kill the parasite. However, it is not well known whether these intermediates cause DNA damage in CL patients.

Lymphocyte DNA damage in patients with acute coronary syndrome and its relationship with severity of acute coronary syndrome.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between lymphocyte DNA damage and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

Methods: The study population contained 53 patients with ACS, 48 patients with stable angina and 35 voluntary healty subjects. DNA damage was assessed by alkaline comed assay in peripheral lymphocyte and plasma levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined using a novel automated measurement method.

Injuries after an electric shock, such as dermal burns, motor and sensory nerve deficits, fractures and dislocations, are reported in the literature. Posterior dislocation of the shoulder after electric-shock is the common musculoskeletal injury. Bilateral dislocation, either anterior or posterior, is rarely seen and reported.

PSA bouncing after short term androgen deprivation and 3D-conformal radiotherapy for localized prostate adenocarcinoma and the relationship with the kinetics of testosterone.

Objectives: To assess the factors effecting PSA bounce and to identify any possible relationship with biochemical control after 3-D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and total androgen deprivation (TAD) for prostate cancer by evaluating four previously described PSA bounce definitions.

Methods: Between January 1998 and January 2001, 83 consecutive patients with clinically localized prostate cancer were treated by 3D-CRT with neoadjuvant 3 months and/or 6 months adjuvant TAD. All patients had a pretreatment PSA level, at least eight post-external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) PSA and testosterone levels and minimum two years of follow-up.
