Background: Dialysis modalities and their various treatment schedules result from complex compromises ('trade-offs') between medical, financial, technological, ergonomic, and ecological factors. This study targets summarizing the mutual influence of these trade-offs on (trans)portable, wearable, or even (partially) implantable haemodialysis (HD) systems, identify what systems are in development, and how they might improve quality of life (QoL) for patients with kidney failure.

Methods: HD as defined by international standard IEC 60601-2-16 was applied on a PUBMED database query regarding (trans)portable, wearable, and (partly) implantable HD systems.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study included 94 lymphoma and 97 sarcoidosis patients with over 1cm mediastinal lymph nodes, comparing size, location, and distribution of lymph nodes while using advanced radiomics to analyze 636 lymphadenopathies.
  • * Results showed significant differences in lymph node characteristics between the two conditions, with radiomics achieving high accuracy (AUC >0.95) in distinguishing between sarcoidosis and lymphoma, indicating its potential as a reliable diagnostic tool.

Biomimicking the chemical, mechanical, and topographical properties of bone on an implant model is crucial to obtain rapid and effective osteointegration, especially for the large-area fractures of the skeletal system. Titanium-based biomaterials are more frequently preferred in clinical use in such cases and coating these materials with oxide layers having chemical/nanotopographic properties to enhance osteointegration and implantation success rates has been studied for a long time. The objective of this study is to examine the high and rapid mineralization potential of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) coated and atomic layer deposition (ALD)-alumina coated titanium substrates on large deformation areas with difficult spontaneous healing.

Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is the most commonly used effective alkylating drug in cancer treatment, but its use is restricted because its toxic side effect causes testicular toxicity. CTX disrupts the tissue redox and antioxidant balance and the resulting tissue damage causes oxidative stress. In our study based on this problem, kefir against CTX-induced oxidative stress and testicular toxicity were investigated.

Introduction: Does bilateral internal iliac artery ligation (BIIAL), a fundamental intervention in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, increase the risk of urinary incontinence (UI)? This study aims to shed light on the effects of BIIAL on bladder perfusion and urinary system integrity, thereby elucidating urinary function disorders following pelvic surgery.

Methods: Demographic and medical data were collected from a total of 192 female patients, with and without the application of BIIAL. Urinary incontinence conditions were assessed using the Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis (QUID) test.

Introduction: This study evaluates the effects of dressing timing after abdominal hysterectomy on wound healing and infection risk. It highlights the potential for early dressing removal to accelerate healing and underscores the need for clear guidelines in wound care that align with the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocol.

Methods: Using a prospective, randomized, double-blind design, this research was carried out at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Orthohantaviruses are significant public health threats, causing various diseases like hemorrhagic fever and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, so monitoring wild rodents for these viruses is crucial for outbreak preparedness.
  • Researchers conducted a study from 2015 to 2017 in Southern Anatolia but found no evidence of orthohantavirus infections among the trapped rodents.
  • The study suggests that orthohantavirus presence may be influenced by climatic conditions, particularly precipitation and temperature, and emphasizes the need for further research on rodent surveillance in different regions.

In this study, a digital twin model of a hydroelectric power plant has been created. Models of the entire power plant have been created and malfunction situations of a sensor located after the inlet valve of the plant have been analyzed using a programmable logic controller (PLC). As a feature of the digital twin (DT), the error prediction and prevention function has been studied specifically for the pressure sensor.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes data from the CF Registry of Turkey to measure the rate of decline in pulmonary function (ppFEV1) among cystic fibrosis patients and identifies risk factors related to this decline.
  • It found that patients with more severe disease (ppFEV1 < 40) had poorer nutritional status and a higher prevalence of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection compared to those with better lung function.
  • The results emphasize the need for regular monitoring of patients with normal initial ppFEV1 and early treatment for P. aeruginosa infections, highlighting the crucial role of proper nutrition in managing cystic fibrosis.

Fermented prebiotic and probiotic products with kefir are very important to slow down and prevent the growth of tumors and to treat cancer by stimulating the immune response against tumor cells. Cyclophosphamide (CPx) is widely preferred in cancer treatment but its effectiveness in high doses is restricted because of its side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of kefir against CPx-induced heart and liver toxicity.

Plasma medicine is gaining attraction in the medical field, particularly the use of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) in biomedicine. The chemistry of the plasma is complex, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) within it are the basis for the biological effect of CAP on the target. Understanding how the oxidative power of ROS responds to diverse plasma parameters is vital for standardizing the effective application of CAP.

Even at low temperatures, metal nanoparticles (NPs) possess atomic dynamics that are key for their properties but challenging to elucidate. Recent experimental advances allow obtaining atomic-resolution snapshots of the NPs in realistic regimes, but data acquisition limitations hinder the experimental reconstruction of the atomic dynamics present within them. Molecular simulations have the advantage that these allow directly tracking the motion of atoms over time.

We report complete coding sequences of Orthohantavirus dobravaense (Dobrava virus) Igneada strains and phylogenetic characterization of all available complete coding sequences. Our analyses suggested separation of host-dependent lineages, followed by geographic clustering. Surveillance of orthohantaviruses using complete genomes would be useful for assessing public health threats from Dobrava virus.
