Objective: To test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the microleakage of adhesive interferences at the occlusal and gingival margins of both ceramic and metallic brackets bonded with light-cured resin-modified glass ionomer and a conventional adhesive.

Materials And Methods: Sixty freshly extracted human maxillary premolar teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 15 teeth each. Metal and ceramic brackets were bonded to groups 1 and 2 with resin-modified glass ionomer adhesive (RMGIA).

[The efficiency and safety of balloon valvuloplasty in patients with mitral stenosis and a high echo score: mid- and short-term clinical and echocardiographic results].

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the success and safety of percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) and its mid-term clinical and echocardiographic results in patients with symptomatic mitral stenosis, including those having a high echo score (9 to 11).

Study Design: This prospective study included 57 consecutive patients (9 men, 48 women; mean age 41+/-9 years) who underwent PMBV with the Inoue technique for symptomatic (NYHA class II-IV) mitral stenosis (valve area <1.5 cm2).

7-plasty technique for the surgical treatment of congenital longitudinal ear lobe cleft.

The ear lobe plays an important part in the aesthetic appearance of the auricle. The clefts of the ear lobe may vary in a wide range of severity from a simple notching to extensive tissue deficiency. We have operated on a congenital longitudinal ear lobe cleft using an alternative surgical method and obtained a favorable result.

Hypnic headache associated with medication overuse: case report.

We have recently evaluated a 54-year-old woman who had migraine without aura in her history but presenting with a typical hypnic headache (HH) which is presumably not a primary headache but associated with an ergotamine overuse headache. Her HH was relieved with a washout protocol which includes 75 mg amitriptyline daily with the addition of metoclopramide and encouraging her not to use any analgesics. Our aim was to report this unique patient to emphasize this rare association and to discuss the possible pathophysiological implications for both of these entities.

Does laparoscopic cystectomy and cauterization of endometriomas greater than 3 cm diminish ovarian response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation during IVF-ET? A case-control study.

Aims: The objective of this study is to evaluate the in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer results of patients with endometriomas pretreated with laparoscopic cystectomy and cauterization compared with age-matched tubal infertility patients.

Methods: Records of the in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer unit have been retrospectively reviewed from September 2000 to September 2004. Twenty-two patients who underwent surgery for endometriomas and participated in an in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer procedure, were detected and age-matched with 22 tubal factor infertility patients.

Electrochemically controlled solid-phase microextraction (EC-SPME) based on overoxidized sulfonated polypyrrole.

A method for the extraction and selective determination of cations is proposed using electro-synthesized overoxidized sulfonated polypyrrole film. The polymer film is used for the selective extraction of trace levels of nickel and cadmium ions by solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The cation uptake and release properties of the overoxidized sulfonated polypyrrole film electrode were examined under both open circuit and controlled potential conditions for prospective applications in electrochemically controlled solid-phase microextraction.

Determination of lead in dialysis concentrates using flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry.

Flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HGAAS) was used for determination of lead in dialysis concentrates. The parameters such as acidity, concentration of oxidising and reducing agents and argon gas flow rate were investigated to reach the best peak height sensitivity. No significant background signal was observed at high salt concentrations.

Simultaneous determination of cadmium and zinc using a fiber optic device and fluorescence spectrometry.

A reservoir type of optode is described for simultaneous and remote determination of Cd and Zn using [9-(1',4',7',10',13'-pentaazacyclopentadecyl)methylanthracene] as the fluorophore. Simultaneous analysis was achieved by the significant perturbation in the fluorescence spectrum of the Cd-ligand complex while the Zn complex only results in enhancement in the fluorescence intensity as compared to ligand alone. The ion permeability of several membranes were examined; Nafion and cellophane were used for the construction of the optode.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall with a retropharyngeal abscess: case report and literature review.

We herein report a case of a diabetic 49-year-old woman with anterior chest wall necrotizing fasciitis that caused a retropharyngeal abscess and discuss the literature surrounding necrotizing soft tissue infections of the chest wall. The patient was treated with serial wound debridements, antibiotic therapy, and percutaneous drainage and serial irrigation of the retropharyngeal abscess with a silicone catheter. The resulting defect was grafted with a split thickness skin graft.

Objective: To compare the in vitro microleakage of orthodontic brackets (metal and ceramic) between enamel-adhesive and adhesive-bracket interfaces at the occlusal and gingival sides produced by self-etching primer system with that of conventional acid etching and bonding.

Materials And Method: Sixty freshly extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were used in this study. The teeth were separated into four groups of 15 teeth each and received the following treatments: Group 1, 37% phosphoric acid gel + Transbond XT liquid primer + stainless steel bracket; Group 2, Transbond Plus Self-Etching Primer (TSEP) + stainless steel bracket; Group 3, 37% phosphoric acid gel + Transbond XT liquid primer + ceramic bracket; Group 4, TSEP + ceramic bracket.

The effect of different light sources on microleakage of bleached enamel.

This study evaluated the immediate effects of halogen, LED (light-emitting diode), and plasma are curing units on microleakage of bleached enamel. The buccal and lingual enamel surfaces of experimental groups (n=30) were bleached with 16% carbamide peroxide for a period of 10 days, with a daily contact time of 90 minutes. Box-shaped Class V cavities were also prepared on 60 extracted molar teeth (n=30, control group).

A unique case of anomalous coronary origin detected by 64-row multislice computed tomography coronary angiography.

The anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the right sinus of valsalva is an anatomical abnormality that is usually associated with myocardial ischaemia and sudden death. We report on a case in which three different diagnostic techniques were used to find the cause of the ischaemic symptoms in a patient whose left coronary artery originated anomalously in the right sinus of valsalva and followed a course between the aorta and the pulmonary trunk. The techniques were treadmill exercise test for ischaemia, conventional angiography, which was used for the initial diagnosis, and 64-row multislice computerised tomography, used to determine the anomalous course of the artery.

A comparative ID migraine screener study in ophthalmology, ENT and neurology out-patient clinics.

Migraine is more likely to be misdiagnosed in patients with comorbid diseases. Not only primary care physicians, but also specialists might misdiagnose it due to the lack of diagnostic criteria awareness. The ID migraine test is a reliable screening instrument that may facilitate and accelerate migraine recognition.

Plasmonic band gap structures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) adsorbed on biharmonic metallic grating structures was studied. Biharmonic metallic gratings include two different grating components, one acting as a coupler to excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), and the other forming a plasmonic band gap for the propagating SPPs. In the vicinity of the band edges, localized surface plasmons are formed.

Normalized maximum intensity time ratio maps and morphological descriptors for assessment of malignancy in MR mammography.

Effectiveness of morphological descriptors based on normalized maximum intensity-time ratio (nMITR) maps generated using a 3 x 3 pixel moving mask on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) mammograms are studied for assessment of malignancy. After a rough indication of volume of interest on the nMITR maps, lesions are automatically segmented. Two-dimensional (2D) convexity, normalized complexity, extent, and eccentricity as well as three-dimensional (3D) versions of these descriptors and contact surface area ratio are computed.

Long-term results after simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation using donors aged 45 years or older.

Unlabelled: With the shortage of organ donors, there is a critical need to use all available pancreas grafts for transplantation.

Methods: From June 1994 to December 2006 we performed 340 pancreas transplantations (317 simultaneous pancreas-kidney 5 pancreas only, 18 pancreas after kidney) including 69 (20%) transplantations from donors aged 45 years or older. Pancreas grafts from older donors were analyzed for graft and patient survival as well as surgical complications, compared with results from younger donors.

Use of porous polyethylene implant for augmentation of the posterior pharynx in young adult patients with borderline velopharyngeal insufficiency.

In the current study, we evaluated the efficiency of using porous polyethylene implant to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in young adult patients. Ten male patients with VPI, aged 21 to 27 years, underwent posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation with porous polyethylene implant. The evaluations for VPI on all patients in the study included speech evaluation of nasality and articulation, mirror test, nasopharyngoscopy, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

Simplified and versatile use of gluteal perforator flaps for pressure sores.

As a first choice for treating pressure sores, we present our experiences with gluteal perforator flaps and a simplified surgical technique. Twenty-three gluteal perforator flaps were used in 20 patients (13 males, 7 females; aged, 8-68 years) with pressure sores. The pressure sores were sacral in 16 patients, ischial in 2, and trochanteric in 2 patients.

Objective: The impact of migraine on physical, social, and emotional performance is considerable, yet it remains an underdiagnosed disorder. ID-Migraine is a validated migraine-screening tool developed to facilitate diagnosis. This study evaluated the validity and use of the Turkish version of the ID-Migraine screener (ID-Ms) in the workplace, and measured the impact of headache on disability, productivity, and quality of life among the workforce.

Determination of mercury in table salt samples by on-line medium exchange anodic stripping voltammetry.

A new method for the determination of traces of total mercury by using a gold film electrode in salt samples was developed. Table salts are known to contain mercury at ultra-trace level as well as a high quantity of chloride ions that cause severe disturbance during the stripping step when gold is used as the electrode material in voltammetric measurements. The interference of high chloride content in the determination of mercury was eliminated by reducing its concentration down to 3 x 10(-3) mol L(-1) level which is optimum for the determination by using on-line medium exchange procedure immediately after the deposition step.

An interactive dynamic analysis and decision support software for MR mammography.

A fully automated software is introduced to facilitate MR mammography (MRM) examinations and overcome subjectiveness in diagnosis using normalized maximum intensity-time ratio (nMITR) maps. These maps inherently suppress enhancements due to normal parenchyma and blood vessels that surround lesions and have natural tolerance to small field inhomogeneities and motion artifacts. The classifier embedded within the software is trained with normalized complexity and maximum nMITR of 22 lesions and tested with the features of remaining 22 lesions.
