Background And Aims: The C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) is a novel parameter that has been reported as a significant prognostic marker in some diseases. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the predictive value of this ratio with regard to nutritional status in geriatric patients.

Methods And Results: A total of 154 geriatric patients (age ≥65 years) who consecutively presented to the internal medicine outpatient clinic were included in this cross-sectional study.

Background: Adolescent pregnancy is defined as pregnancy occurring in young women between the ages of 10 and 19 years. Adolescent pregnancies, which are among the social healthcare concerns in developed and developing countries, have negative effects on maternal and infant health. Pregnancy in adolescence puts the health of both the mother and child at risk, as adolescent pregnancies have higher rates of eclampsia, systemic infection, low birth weight, and preterm delivery compared to other pregnancies.

Objective: In this study, demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of patients aged 65 and over who are followed on mechanical ventilators due to COVID-19 in intensive care clinics will be useful in terms of strategies to be developed in the fight against COVID-19 and other infectious agents.

Patients And Methods: Our study included 299 patients aged 65 years and older, who were not chronically ill, and who were followed up on mechanical ventilators due to COVID-19 in intensive care clinics in the period between 2020 and 2022. Our study was designed as a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), was first detected in December 2019 and then spread globally, resulting in a pandemic. Initially, it was unknown if chronic kidney disease (CKD) contributed to the mortality caused by COVID-19. The immunosuppression associated with this disease may minimize the COVID-19-described hyper-inflammatory state or immunological dysfunction, and a high prevalence of comorbidities may lead to a poorer clinical prognosis.

Objective: As an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, Hesperidin was investigated to prove whether it prevents damage to the kidney and lung tissues of rats undergoing renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Materials And Methods: Four groups of rats were set, including eight subjects each as Group 1 (control), Group 2-RIR (renal ischemia reperfusion), Groups 3 and 4 as pretreatment groups (50 HES, 100 HES).

Results: According to our results, Hesperidin pretreatment improved the biochemical and histopathological parameters in kidney and lung tissues of rats with ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Objective: COVID-19 may cause thrombosis in both venous and arterial systems. Familiarity with the signs and symptoms of thrombosis and its treatment is essential in treating COVID-19 infection and its complications. D-Dimer and mean platelet volume (MPV) are measurements related to the development of thrombosis.

Background: Ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is an interfascial plane block used for analgesia of the chest and abdominal wall. This study aimed to evaluate the perioperative analgesic efficacy of bilateral single-shot ESPB at T5 vertebral level in breast reduction surgery.

Materials And Methods: Sixty adult female patients scheduled for breast reduction surgery were included and randomly allocated to two groups to receive either preoperative ESPB with a local anesthetic mixture of 10 mL 0.

Objective: Ketamine changes respiratory mechanics, provides airway relaxation, and alleviates bronchospasm in patients with pulmonary disease. This study investigated the effect of a continuous infusion of ketamine during thoracic surgery on arterial oxygenation (PaO2/FiO2) and the shunt fraction (Qs/Qt) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Methods: Thirty patients older than 40 years, diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and undergoing lobectomy were recruited for this study.

Background: Although current guidelines recommend cholecystectomy during the same admission in patients with mild acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP), it involves a waiting list most of the time. We aimed to assess the risk of complications and determine predictors during the waiting period for cholecystectomy after the first episode of ABP.

Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in patients with mild ABP.

Objective: Our study aimed at investigating the impacts of demographic, hematological, and biochemical factors on the clinical course and the prognostic outcome in adult COVID-19 patients.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study was performed in the internal medicine departments of two hospitals, and data were extracted from the medical files of 1,700 adult COVID-19 patients (836 females, 49.2%; 864 males, 50.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on benign biliary strictures (BBS) that develop during acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP) due to compression of the common bile duct (CBD).
  • Researchers aimed to find the incidence of BBS in ABP patients and assess outcomes after endoscopic treatment involving the insertion of plastic stents.
  • Results showed that 3.6% of ABP patients had CBD strictures, with 66.7% resolving within 3 months post-stenting, and no recurrent strictures observed in the year following stenting removal.

Objectives: To investigate the role of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) level in predicting intensive care and mortality in patients affected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital (Sakarya, Turkey) between April and August of 2020. We enrolled patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 via real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and admitted to the intensive care (Severe COVID-19; S-COVID) or non intensive care (Moderate COVID-19; M-COVID).

Objective: SARS-CoV-2 infection primarily affects T-lymphocytes, particularly CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. However, there is a need for simpler and less expensive laboratory tests with predictive values comparable to CD4+ cell counts. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the role of neopterin levels in predicting intensive care and mortality in coronavirus disease patients in 2019.

Objective: Inflammation forms the basis of cancer development and progression. It causes changes in complete blood count parameters, such as neutrophil counts. Low albumin levels are associated with poor prognosis in cancer patients.

Background: One of the most misdiagnosed appendicular pathologies is lymphoid hyperplasia (LH) that can be managed con-servatively when identified early and is self-limiting. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare acute appendicitis (AA) with LH in terms of hematological parameters to determine whether there is a hematological predictor to distinguish the two diseases.

Methods: Complete blood cell counts of patients with AA were compared with those having LH.

Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia (FHH) is a rare benign condition inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern with high penetrance. This rare genetic condition is detected in approximately 2% of cases examined as primary hyperparathyroidism (PH). The Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR) gene's inactivating mutations result in a calcium-parathormone level-saturation curve shift to the right.
