Two very low birth weight infants who developed renal candidiasis with pelvicalyceal fungal concretions were treated medically with Amphotericin B and 5 Fluorocytosine. Two months following cessation of therapy, the fungal concretions decreased in size, became sterile and developed calcification in residual debris. The calcifications was still present at demise in one patient and at 18 months follow up in the other.

Inasmuch as human monocytes are able to kill Candida albicans (C. albicans) only through oxidative pathways, which also produce chemiluminescence (CL), CL was used to assess the ability of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and monocytes to phagocytose and kill C. albicans in a 12-year-old girl with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis.

Two brothers, age 9 and 11, respectively, have marked deficiency of nucleoside phosphorylase associated with defective T-cell function and normal B-cell function. Unlike the previously described five patients with this syndrome, each of these children has sufficient NP catalytic activity in their red blood cells (below 1% of the normal level) to be visualized after electrophoresis and staining for the enzyme. Their healthy sibling has normal NP activity and a normal isozyme pattern.

A technician was accidentally exposed to the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion and subsequently treated with pralidoxime for the autonomic, somatic and psychiatric manifestations of intoxication. Although long-term therapy with pralidoxime is not recommended, this patient required and obtained symptomatic benefit from its prolonged use. Erythrocytic and plasma cholinesterase activities had been monitored prior to exposure and were monitored throughout treatment and following recovery.

Preliminary results suggest that the antibiotic lincomycin (a product of Streptomyces lincolnensis var. lincolnensis) possesses certain valuable properties which include good in vitro activity against many strains of hospital staphylococci resistant to many other antibiotics. During a study of this agent, a selected series of severe staphylococcal infections due to resistant organisms were treated with lincomycin, with encouraging responses.

A two-family outbreak of 11 cases of trichinosis with one fatality has been described. Efforts were made to obtain an early assessment of the severity of parasitization on the basis of initial clinical appearance, serial electrocardiograms, changes in eosinophil count, serum protein analyses and SGOT levels. The diagnoses were confirmed by muscle biopsy and by Suessenguth-Kline flocculation tests on serum.
