Bevacizumab plus gemcitabine and oxaliplatin as first-line therapy for metastatic or locally advanced pancreatic cancer: a phase II trial.

Effects of additional gracilis tendon harvest on muscle torque, motor coordination, and knee laxity in ACL reconstruction.

Purpose: To evaluate muscle torque, lower extremity coordination, and knee laxity after ACL reconstruction comparing patients operated on with semitendinosus graft (ST) and patients with combined semitendinosus and gracilis (STGR) grafts.

Methods: Forty-six subjects who underwent ST (n = 23) or STGR harvest (n = 23) ACL reconstruction participated in this study. Quadriceps and hamstring torque were recorded using an isokinetic dynamometer.

Enabling Data Analysis on High-Throughput Data in Large Data Depository Using Web-Based Analysis Platform - A Case Study on Integrating QUEST with GenePattern in Epigenetics Research.

Enabling data analysis in large data depositories for high throughput experimental data such as gene microarrays and ChIP-seq is challenging. In this paper, we discuss three methods for integrating QUEST, a data depository for epigenetic experiments, with a web-based data analysis platform GenePattern. These methods are universal and can serve as an exemplary implementation resolving the dilemma facing many similar database systems in integrating data analysis tools.

Using gene co-expression network analysis to predict biomarkers for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia. It is a highly heterogeneous disease, and can be divided roughly into indolent and progressive stages based on classic clinical markers. Immunoglobin heavy chain variable region (IgVH) mutational status was found to be associated with patient survival outcome, and biomarkers linked to the IgVH status has been a focus in the CLL prognosis research field.

The evolution and expression of the snaR family of small non-coding RNAs.

We recently identified the snaR family of small non-coding RNAs that associate in vivo with the nuclear factor 90 (NF90/ILF3) protein. The major human species, snaR-A, is an RNA polymerase III transcript with restricted tissue distribution and orthologs in chimpanzee but not rhesus macaque or mouse. We report their expression in human tissues and their evolution in primates.

Small bowel tumors in emergency surgery.

Background: The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, surgical therapy, and prognosis of 13 patients with small bowel tumor admitted for surgical procedures in an emergency setting.

Methods: From 1996 to 2008, 13 consecutive surgical cases of small bowel tumors were treated at the Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, and Kütahya State Hospital, Department of General Surgery. Clinical and radiological charts of these patients were reviewed retrospectively from the department database.

The objective of this study was to determine the chemical compositions of the essential oil and hexane extract isolated from the inflorescence, leaf stems, and aerial parts of Florence fennel and the antimicrobial activities of the essential oil, hexane extract, and their major component, anethole, against a large variety of foodborne microorganisms.
