Thioesterase superfamily member 2/Acyl-CoA thioesterase 13 (Them2/Acot13) regulates adaptive thermogenesis in mice.

Members of the acyl-CoA thioesterase (Acot) gene family hydrolyze fatty acyl-CoAs, but their biological functions remain incompletely understood. Thioesterase superfamily member 2 (Them2; synonym Acot13) is enriched in oxidative tissues, associated with mitochondria, and relatively specific for long chain fatty acyl-CoA substrates. Using Them2(-/-) mice, we have demonstrated key roles for Them2 in regulating hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism.

Unusual localization of a primary hydatid cyst: a subcutaneous mass in the paraumbilical region.

Hydatid cyst disease caused by Echinoccus granulosus is not a rare disease and mostly localized in liver and lung. The localization of the disease in the subcutaneous paraumbilical region without any other organ involvement is a unique existence that we present. A 63-year-old Turkish male complaining of abdominal distention and pain had an abdominal mass for one year.

The effect of Amifostine (Ethyol) on intestinal anastomosis in rats with radiation enteritis.

Background: Preoperative radiotherapy in colorectal cancers is being used as an adjuvant therapy with increasing frequency. Postoperative complications in early and late periods in various ratios are reported. It has also been shown that radiation has a delaying effect on wound healing and this effect is dose-dependent.

Unusually high prolactin level for medication-induced hyperprolactinemia: a case report.

Hyperprolactinemia has a number of etiologies, including physiological, pathological and pharmacological causes. Hyperprolactinemia is frequently associated with the use of certain medications. Patients using medications known to cause hyperprolactinemia generally develop a mild form of the condition, and the prolactin level rarely exceeds 100 ng/mL in these cases.

Effect of hypoxia on glucose metabolism in nondiabetic patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Aim: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may promote hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Our aim is to investigate the effect of OSAS on the fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and C reactive protein (CRP) in nondiabetic patients.

Assessing eco-toxicological effects of industrial 2,4-D acid iso-octylester herbicide on rat pancreas and liver.

We studied the eco-toxic and carcinogenic effects of a commonly used 2,4-D acid iso-octylester herbicide on rat liver and pancreas. The rats in Group 1 were fed a standard feed and the rats in Group 2 were fed with standard feed to which was added 200 mg/kg/day 2,4-D acid iso-octylester for 16 weeks. Azaserine, 30 mg/kg/body weight, was injected into rats of Groups 3 and 4 to investigate the effects of 2,4-D acid iso-octylester on the development of neoplasms.

A delayed hypersensitivity reaction to a stainless steel crown: a case report.

Stainless steel crowns are commonly used to restore primary or permanent teeth in pediatric restorative dentistry. Here, we describe a case of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, which manifested itself as perioral skin eruptions, after restoring the decayed first permanent molar tooth of a 13-year-old Caucasian girl with a preformed stainless steel crown. The eruptions completely healed within one week after removal of the stainless steel crown.

[Asymptomatic vena cava inferior aneurysm, case report].

Venous aneurysms are uncommon, whereas localized aneurysms of the inferior vena cava are extremely rare. Localized aneurysm of inferior vena cava was first publisheded in 1973 by Oh et al. Though venous aneurysms are generally asymptomatic, it is clinically important because of showing the symptoms of abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute venous obstruction, pulmonary embolism and even sudden death.

Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) modified conducting polymer of 4-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)benzenamine (SNS-NH2) was used as the biosensing platform for glucose analysis. Electrochemical measurements were carried out by following the consumed oxygen due to the enzymatic reaction of glucose oxidase (GOx) at -0.7V vs Ag/AgCl.

Mechanisms of immunotherapy to wasp and bee venom.

Hymenoptera venoms are important allergens that can elicit both local and systemic allergic reactions, including life-threatening anaphylaxis. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) remains the most effective treatment, reducing the risk of systemic reactions in individuals with Hymenoptera venom allergy. VIT can restore normal immunity against venom allergens and provide patients with a lifetime of tolerance to venoms.

Treatment and clinicopathologic predictors for adenoid cystic carcinomas of the head and neck.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the management and clinicopathologic predictors of outcome of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) patients treated and followed at our Department.

Methods: Data on 41 patients treated between 2000 and 2006 at the University of Istanbul, Institute of Oncology, were reviewed. Factors affecting recurrence, distant metastasis and survival were evaluated.

Background: Multiple factors in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) might interfere with optimal growth and maturation and potentially compromise bone health.

Methods: We aimed to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) of patients with CVID using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and investigate risk factors associated with decreased bone density.

[Pediatric head injuries, retrospective analysis of 851 patients: an epidemiological study].

Background: The aim of this study was to contribute to the epidemiological database of our country about pediatric head injuries.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 851 patients younger than 14 years old with head injury, treated in the Neurosurgery Department of Samsun Mehmet Aydın Education and Research Hospital between January 2003 and June 2008.

Results: Five hundred and fifty (65%) patients were male and 301 (35%) were female.

This study investigated the total phenolic content and the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiradical activities of methanol, ethanol, and aqueous extracts of E. spectabilis (obtained from the Antalya region of Turkey).

This article deals with the use of pyranose oxidase (PyOx) and glucose oxidase (GOx) enzymes in amperometric biosensor design and their application in monitoring fermentation processes with the combination of flow injection analysis (FIA). The amperometric studies were carried out at -0.7 V by following the oxygen consumption due to the enzymatic reactions for both batch and FIA modes.
