Removal of the soft tissue lesions from the maxillary sinus is sometimes difficult and time consuming in endoscopic sinus surgery. Failure of endoscopic removal may necessitate combination of canine fossa approach and endoscopic approach. Our new instrument, 'Derevator', is designed for easy removal of the pathological soft tissue lesions from the maxillary sinus through middle meatal antrostomy.

Objective: To evaluate hemoglobin, leukocyte, platelet counts and red cell distribution width values during acute vivax malaria.

Methods: This study, which comprises 90 symptomatic vivax malaria patients compared with 52 healthy controls, investigated hemoglobin, leukocyte, platelet counts and red cell distribution width values during acute disease prior to the treatment in vivax malaria, from May 2002 to December 2004 in Adana, Cukurova region, located in the southern part of Turkey, along the Mediterranean coast.

Results: Mean values for hemoglobin, leukocyte and platelet counts in the vivax malaria group in our study were found to be significantly lower in comparison to the control group.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a non-neoplastic fibro-osseous lesion. Paranasal sinus involvement is infrequent. Involvement of the frontal sinus, sphenoid sinus, and middle turbinate is rare, and only sporadic cases have been reported in the literature.

Entamoeba histolytica is the predominant causative agent of human amoebiasis, a significant and common diarrhoeal disease among children of developing countries. Diagnosis of this illness by the microscopical detection of the parasites in stool samples is insensitive and often incapable of differentiating the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica from the commensal parasite E. dispar.

Problem/objective: Iatrogenic epidermal cysts have been reported in various locations following otological surgical procedures. Especially after endaural incisions, surgeons may implant squamous epithelium into underlying tissue. An epidermal cyst of the parotid region may appear years after ipsilateral ear surgery.

Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical picture which is rarely seen in children. In this case report here it is presented a patient who has biochemical and clinical signs of rhabdomyolysis and admitted to our clinic with hypernatremia. The authors think that it is necessary to be alert for rhabdomyolysis in severe hypernatremia cases.

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has long been reported in the Cukurova region. We have compared the sensitivity of the conventional methods of diagnosis by microscopy and cultivation of lesion aspirates against polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of parasite-specific DNA from these samples.

Methods: The samples (n = 25) were obtained from patients clinically diagnosed with CL at the regional dermatology clinic.

In this report, an atypical form of cyclopia is described in a stillborn Brown Swiss cross male calf. The changes were confined to the head. The most significant malformation was the presence of a median orbita-like opening that did not contain an eyeball.

Angiofibromas rarely localize in extranasopharyngeal sites. The most common site for extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas is the maxillary sinus. The ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses, nasal septum, middle and inferior turbinates, conjunctiva, molar and retromolar region, and larynx are other sites where extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have been reported.

We studied gastric Helicobacter spp. in five red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Samples of stomach from the cardia, corpus, pyloric antrum, and duodenum were subjected to histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination for the presence of Helicobacter and gastritis.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC, microg ml-1) of itraconazole and terbinafine against overall 34 Aspergillus isolates from the external ear canals with otomycosis have been determined with M38-P microdilution method suggested by National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). MIC intervals in 48 h determined by taking MIC-2 value of itraconazole (the lowest drug concentration causing 50% inhibition of visible fungal growth) and MIC-0 value of terbinafine (the lowest drug concentration causing 100% inhibition of visible fungal growth) as a basis have been found as follows: 0.125-1 and 0.

Nineteen goslings with pulmonary and systemic aspergillosis were the subject of the study. The lungs and air sacs were the main sites affected by the disease, and were generally characterised by diffuse yellowish-white granulomas. In 7 cases with pulmonary and air-sac involvement the granulomas were scattered to the serosal linings of the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tracts, to the liver, spleen and kidneys, and in two cases also to the bursa of Fabricius, musculus (m.

A number of growth factors, their binding proteins, and their receptors have been shown to be induced in the hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain. In this prospective study, we aimed at determining the levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), growth hormone (GH), and cortisol in HI babies and at identifying whether they differ from the levels of control infants. The serum IGF-1 levels were measured after the first 12-24 h of life, and the measurements were repeated on the 5th and 10th days of life for babies with HI encephalopathy (n = 18) and on the 10th day of life for controls (n = 19).

Otomycosis usually requires long-term treatment and tends to recur. This study was performed on 87 patients with the clinical diagnosis of otomycosis and 20 controls in order to determine the pathogenic agents, predisposing factors and a cost-effective treatment. The predisposing factors included wearing head clothes (74.

Otomycosis tends to recur despite long-term treatment. To our knowledge, there is no study in the English literature concerning the clinical importance of concomitant otomycosis and dermatomycoses. We investigated the presence of dermatomycoses in 52 patients with otomycosis in order to document the clinical and microbiological importance of their coexistence.

This paper investigates the determinants of smoking among middle- and high-school students in Ankara, Turkey. Data were collected from 4800 students in the second semester of the 1997-98 academic year to investigate substance use prevalence among young people. In addition to classical independent variables, factors which are not frequently used in the literature--such as school type, neighborhood, family religiosity, and factors reflecting the cultural background of the students--are included in the analysis.

Tuberculosis was detected in seven geese at the breeding unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kafkas University, during 1998. In the necropsy, lesions of nodular type were seen in the liver, spleen, and lungs. Histopathologically, the lesions were characterized by central areas of caseous necrosis surrounded by epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes, and an outer fibrous capsule.

Leishmania isolates from 57 cases of human cutaneous (CL), human visceral (VL), and canine visceral (CVL) leishmaniasis in Turkey were grouped by multi-site DNA polymorphism analyses into five genotypes. The initial grouping was based on DNA heterogeneity of the faster-evolving mitochondrion (kinetoplast) minicircles and the intergenic regions of two nuclear repetitive genes. Taxonomic affiliation and phylogenetic relationships of the five genotypes were inferred by comparing them with reference species for sequence heterogeneity in a approximately 1.
