This paper examines the potential changes that xR has introduced into the field of hand surgery, exploring how xR enhances patient-centric care, increases medical service efficiency and revolutionizes surgical training, planning and therapeutic interventions.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and ultimately fatal disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by interstitial fibrosis of the lungs. Bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse model (BLM model) is a widely used animal model to evaluate therapeutic targets for IPF. Histopathological analysis of lung fibrosis is an important method for evaluating BLM model.

Comparison of Short-Term Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer Surgery Performed by Male and Female Surgeons: A Japanese Multicenter Study.

Introduction: The number of female doctors is increasing worldwide, but the percentage of female general surgeons and gastrointestinal surgeons remains low, at only 6% in Japan. Furthermore, in rural areas, the number of doctors is small and training opportunities are limited, and training in surgical techniques is reportedly inadequate compared with urban areas. This study examined the current status and surgical outcomes of colorectal cancer surgery by surgeon sex using a multicenter database in a Japanese rural area.

Comparison of robotic and laparoscopic approaches in short- and long-term outcomes of lateral pelvic lymph node dissection for advanced rectal cancer: a Japanese multicenter study.

Background: Lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPND) is a challenging surgical technique with complex anatomy and narrow pelvic manipulation. The outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic surgery for LPND are still unclear.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 169 consecutive patients who underwent rectal cancer surgery with LPND between 2016 and 2023.

In situ extended X-ray absorption fine-structure spectra (Mn K-edge) on in situ treated samples show that the supported phase in MnO/SiO resembles MnO while that in MnO/AlO samples resembles MnO. In situ Raman spectroscopy shows the involvement of a common peroxide surface species.

Preparation of Amorphous Probucol with Fluvastatin Sodium Salt and Stability Comparison Studies of Co-amorphous Probucol with Fluvastatin Sodium Salt and Atorvastatin Calcium Trihydrate Salt.

A co-amorphous state composed of probucol (PC) and fluvastatin sodium salt (FLU) was prepared by spray-drying (SD). We have previously reported that PC and atorvastatin calcium trihydrate salt (ATO) formed a co-amorphous state when prepared by a SD method and that the solubility of PC and the amorphous stability were improved by the preparation of the co-amorphous state. In the present study, the physicochemical properties, including the amorphous stability of the prepared co-amorphous state, were characterized.

Deep Learning for Predicting Acute Exacerbation and Mortality of Interstitial Lung Disease.

Rationale: Some patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) have a high mortality rate or experience acute exacerbation of ILD (AE-ILD) that results in increased mortality. Early identification of these high-risk patients and accurate prediction of the onset of these important events is important to determine treatment strategies. Although various factors that affect disease behavior among patients with ILD hinder the accurate prediction of these events, the use of longitudinal information may enable better prediction.

[Left Atrium Appendage Aneurysm Late After Suture Exclusion:Report of a Case].

Left atrial appendage closure is widely performed in cardiac surgery to prevent intracardiac thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation. Herein, we report the surgical case of an 80-year-old man whose left atrial appendage became aneurysmic long after undergoing suture exclusion. At the age of 67, he underwent mitral valve annuloplasty and left atrial appendage suture exclusion for mitral regurgitation and chronic atrial fibrillation at our institution.

Filtered Point Processes Tractably Capture Rhythmic And Broadband Power Spectral Structure in Neural Electrophysiological Recordings.

Neural electrophysiological recordings arise from interacting rhythmic (oscillatory) and broadband (aperiodic) biological subprocesses. Both rhythmic and broadband processes contribute to the neural power spectrum, which decomposes the variance of a neural recording across frequencies. Although an extensive body of literature has successfully studied rhythms in various diseases and brain states, researchers only recently have systematically studied the characteristics of broadband effects in the power spectrum.

Artificial intelligence-based personalized survival prediction using clinical and radiomics features in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Background: Multiple first-line treatment options have been developed for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in each subgroup determined by predictive biomarkers, specifically driver oncogene and programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) status. Prognostic impact of postoperative management by an intensive care unit intensivist after colonic perforation.

Purpose: Postoperative management for colonic perforation is an important prognostic factor, but whether intensivists perform postoperative management varies between institutions.

Methods: We investigated 291 patients with colonic perforation between 2018 and 2022. Patients were divided into those managed by an intensivists (ICU group; n = 40) and those not managed by an intensivists (non-ICU group; n = 251).

Background/objectives: UBL3 (Ubiquitin-like 3) is a protein that plays a crucial role in post-translational modifications, particularly in regulating protein transport within small extracellular vesicles. While previous research has predominantly focused on its interactions with α-synuclein, this study investigates UBL3's role in Huntington's disease (HD). HD is characterized by movement disorders and cognitive impairments, with its pathogenesis linked to toxic, polyglutamine (polyQ)-expanded mutant huntingtin fragments (mHTT).

Introduction: The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification is used to assess the fitness of a patient for surgery. Whether laparoscopic surgery is appropriate for colorectal cancer patients with poor ASA performance status (PS) remains unclear.

Methods: Among 4585 patients who underwent colorectal surgery between 2016 and 2023, this study retrospectively reviewed all 458 patients with ASA-PS ≥3.

Background: Several methods are used for reconstruction in colon cancer surgery, including hand-sewn or stapled anastomosis. Purpose: The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a novel score that offers a good reflection of nutritional status, inflammatory response, and immune system status. The CALLY index is reported to correlate with the prognosis of various carcinomas. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between the CALLY index and the short-term prognosis of obstructive colorectal cancer managed with a colonic stent.

Raman optical activity study of deuterated sugars: deuterium labelling as a tool for structural analysis.

Structural analyses using Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy conventionally rely on vibrational signals in the fingerprint region ranging from 100 to 1800 cm. Use of deuterium labelling to observe ROA signals in the C-D stretching region provides additional information about a local structure of large molecular systems. So far, the potential of C-D stretching ROA signals for structural analysis has rarely been explored.

Aberrant aggregation of misfolded alpha-synuclein (α-syn), a major pathological hallmark of related neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), can translocate between cells. Ubiquitin-like 3 (UBL3) is a membrane-anchored ubiquitin-fold protein and post-translational modifier. UBL3 promotes protein sorting into small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and thereby mediates intercellular communication.

Effect of Body Type on Respiratory Kinematics in Female Classical Singers.

Breathing for singing is a highly contested issue in singing pedagogy with a wide variety of strategies recommended by teachers and the tendency for individuals to find more success with some strategies than others. The concept of body type as a determining factor has been suggested and supported by Hixon and Hoit, but little research has been conducted on this topic since and especially little research has been conducted using biologically female subjects. The investigators recruited eight female, classically trained singers and evaluated their body composition based on several anthropometric measurements (height, body mass, body fat percentage, and ectomorphy as determined by the Heath-Carter Somatotype system).

Pediatric Intravenous Anesthesia in Japan-Where Are Anesthesiologists?

Most pediatric intravenous anesthesia in Japan is performed outside the operating theatre by non-anesthetists. The 2020 revision increased reimbursement for long-term intravenous anesthesia (Category 3) by anesthesiologists, but its impact on practice behavior is unknown. We analyzed the annual number of calculations for each category of intravenous anesthesia and their age distribution from the national reimbursement data for the three-year period fiscal years (FY) 2018-20 to elucidate trends in the pediatric age group.
