Metallosis Associated with Pyrocarbon Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Implant - A Case Report.

Arthroplasty of the small joints of the hand and fingers is a complex problem facing the hand surgeon. Pyrocarbon implants have been available for several decades. They were originally thought to provide better functional outcomes than silicone implants in patients, mostly due to recreation of the joint anatomy.

Utilization of the web index in the measurement of web creep after syndactyly surgery.

The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of using a web index to measure web creep after syndactyly surgery. A total of 19 hands in nine children (six preoperatively and 13 immediately postoperatively) underwent measurement of their web position. A preliminary study confirmed that the web index measured on the child's hand at the time of surgery was similar to that measured on photographs taken at the same time.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain: a prospective analysis of diagnostic clinical tests.

Background: Identifying the cause of pain on the ulnar side of the wrist can be challenging. The outcome and recovery following surgery can be unpredictable. The aim of this study was to document and analyse the clinical tests used to evaluate the cause of ulnar-sided wrist pain and determine their diagnostic relevance.

Biomechanical Analysis of Abductor Pollicis Longus Lasso Suspensionplasty for Trapeziectomy.

Purpose: Multiple methods of ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) or suspension have been described to prevent first metacarpal subsidence following trapeziectomy. An abductor pollicis longus (APL) lasso is a newly described technique of suspensionplasty, which aims to obviate concerns regarding previously described methods. The purpose of this study was to compare subsidence between the APL lasso and 2 other common methods, APL sling and flexor carpi radialis LRTI, after trapeziectomy in cadaveric forearms.

Eosinophilic Fasciitis - Beware of the Rare Form of Hand Contracture.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare form of fibrosing disorder associated with peripheral eosinophilia with scleroderma-like skin induration and fasciitis in the extremities resulting in painful swelling, erythema and progressive contracture. We present a case report of EF and a literature review to raise awareness of this unusual condition and also highlight key features in its management.

Staged laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy followed by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for morbidly obese patients: a risk reduction strategy.

Background: In our centre laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGBP) is the most effective weight loss surgical procedure performed. However, LRYGBP may be associated with higher risk of peri- and postoperative complications in contrast to a purely restrictive procedure to justify this procedure on all comers. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) as a staged procedure may be an alternate risk reduction strategy.
