Background: As new technologies emerge, there is a significant shift in the way care is delivered on a global scale. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been rapidly and inexorably used to optimize patient outcomes, reduce health system costs, improve workflow efficiency, and enhance population health. Despite the widespread adoption of AI technologies, the literature on patient engagement and their perspectives on how AI will affect clinical care is scarce.

The objective of this study was to measure the efficacy of protection orders (POs) in reducing assault and injury-related outcomes using a matched comparison group and tracking outcomes over time. This study was a retrospective review of police, emergency department, family court, and prosecutor administrative records for a cohort of police-involved female IPV victims; all events over a 4-year study period were abstracted. Victims who obtained POs were compared with a propensity-score-based match group without POs over three time periods: Before, During, and After the issuance of a PO.

Introduction: Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall in August 2005. Approximately 1,500 deaths have been directly attributed to the hurricane, primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi. In New Orleans, Louisiana, most of the healthcare infrastructure was destroyed by flooding, and > 200,000 residents became homeless.

Background: The effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for ablation of high grade dysplasia (HGD) in Barrett's esophagus (BE) is typically reported histologically. Following successful PDT, Barrett's mucosa is replaced with neosquamous mucosa. The objective of this study was to compare the expression of p53 protein in neosquamous mucosa as compared to that in HGD samples not treated with PDT.

Background And Objectives: Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is a non-invasive technique previously used for detection of cancer in a variety of organ systems. The objective of this study was to determine whether in vivo laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy alone at the visible excitation wavelength of 410 nm could be used to detect non-melanoma skin cancers.

Study Design/materials And Methods: The system consisted of a nitrogen/dye laser tuned at 410 nm, an optical multichannel analyzer, and a fiber optic probe for excitation of tissue and collection of fluorescence emission.

The recombinant wild-type p53 adenovirus has been proven effective against the growth of human head and neck squamous cell cancer (SCCHN) cell lines iir vitro and in a nude mouse model. The addition of a FLAG peptide sequence was used in this study, along with the p53 adenovirus vector as a marker of the site of the gene therapy activity. It provides clear evidence of the exogenous gene product within the transduced carcinoma cells.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lower gingiva is a rare lesion that frequently invades the mandible. To determine the factors that affect local disease control and overall survival, a retrospective review of 155 previously untreated patients was performed. Primary lesions larger than 3 cm (P = .

Objective: To determine which clinical and pathologic features are associated with regional metastases in patients with lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma.

Patients And Methods: The medical charts of 155 previously untreated patients seen between 1970 and 1990 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent surgical resection of the primary tumor.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of the tumor suppressor gene wild-type p53 with that of cell-cycle regulator WAF1/CIP1 as single-agent gene therapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND DESIGN: Recombinant cytomegalovirus-promoted adenoviruses containing the wild-type p53 or WAF1/CIP1 (p21) genes were transiently introduced into squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck cell lines. Standard Western blot analysis was used to determine expression in these cells of the proteins encoded by these genes.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx are a rare group of tumors that include carcinoid tumor, atypical carcinoid tumor, and small cell carcinoma. These neoplasms pose interesting diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic dilemmas, and they are, as a whole, aggressive tumors with a tendency for local and distant spread. The authors of this study examined six new cases of laryngeal neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Objective: To compare morphologies of crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex waveforms.

Design: Subjects were 12 young adults with normal hearing. A signal-averaging technique was used to compare onset and offset latencies of crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex waveforms when maximum amplitudes were matched.

Since the introduction of sulfonamides in the late 1930s, coalescent mastoiditis is an uncommon complication of otitis media. Swelling, erythema, and tenderness over the mastoid area with associated anterior displacement of the auricle are classic signs and symptoms of coalescent mastoiditis with formation of a subperiosteal abscess. Early recognition of this entity is essential to prevent its complications.

Sanctioned trauma center designation began in the late 1970's to improve hospital capabilities to care for injured patients. Guided by criteria established by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and led by surgeons dedicated to improving trauma care, many states focused early on the quality of care issue only to later struggle with the political consequences that followed the designation process. Institutional commitment to trauma care was often stated but seldom measured.

Essential tremor is a progressive, potentially debilitating disorder that may be manifested in the voice only. In the case we report, the signs occurred concurrently with the voice characteristics of vocal cord nodules but were subtle. The mildness of the voice tremor precluded treatment at this time, although the results of medical management for the disorder have not been impressive.

The angiographic features of various lesions of the head and neck are presented. Angiographically, cavernous hemangiomas display large venous lakes with calcified phleboliths. Arteriovenous malformations reveal massive tumor stain with well delineated feeding vessels from multiple systems.

Thymineless death was examined in Escherichia coli 15T(-) and recombinants of 15T(-) and E. coli K-12. Those strains that were very sensitive to thymine deprivation were also very sensitive to a variety of inducing agents (mitomycin C, ultraviolet light, hydroxyurea, and nalidixic acid).
