Microfluidics has significantly advanced the field of single-cell analysis, particularly in studies related to cell growth, division, and heterogeneity. Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), a label-free and non-invasive biosensing technique, has been integrated into microfluidic devices for high-throughput and long-term monitoring of single budding yeast cells. Accurate interpretation of EIS measurements of cell growth dynamics necessitates the establishment of theoretical equivalent circuit models for the single-cell sensing system.

Under mild conditions, formic acid effectively separates the components of lignocellulose, removing the majority of the hemicellulose and lignin from the cellulose. However, it has not yet been determined if multiple treatments with fresh formic acid may totally remove hemicellulose and lignin. In this study, fresh formic acid was used to repeatedly pretreat the bamboo powder, and the effect of multiple treatments on the physicochemical structure of the bamboo powder was investigated using changes in fractions, enzymatic hydrolysis, hydrophilicity, cellulose crystallinity, and lignin structure.

This study investigates the mixing effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and dilute-acid pretreated corncob substrates under high-solid conditions. Enzymatic hydrolysis experiments were conducted to assess cellulose conversion rates under varying mixing conditions (0, 50, 150, and 250 rpm) and solids loadings (5 %, 15 %, 25 %, and 35 %, w/v), and distinct physicochemical properties of the substrates were characterized. Additionally, the role of mixing conditions and solid loadings on cellulose hydrolysis kinetics and enzyme adsorption on both substrates and lignin were elucidated.

Alongside fermentable sugars, weak acids, and furan derivatives, lignocellulosic hydrolysates contain non-negligible amounts of lignin-derived aromatic compounds. The biological funnel of lignin offers a new strategy for the "natural" production of protocatechuic acid (PCA). Herein, KT2440 was engineered to produce PCA from lignin-derived monomers in hydrolysates by knocking out protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase and overexpressing vanillate--demethylase endogenously, while acetic acid was used for cell growth.

To further enhance the removal efficiency for furanic and phenolic compounds in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, a new detoxification strategy was proposed, which retained fermentable sugars and promoted the growth and metabolism of subsequent bacteria. The best adsorbent (P/M-CCA) was prepared by hybrid chitosan-chitin nanofiber, graft modification with polyethylenimine, and silanization with methyl triethoxylsilane in order. Taken corn cob hydrolysate as object, the removal rates of HMF and furfural were 85.
