Pain experience of children with Christianson syndrome.

Children with Christianson syndrome (CS), an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the alkali cation/proton exchanger SLC9A6/NHE6, display severe cognitive impairments, mutism, and sensory abnormalities such as hyposensitivity to pain. However, it is unclear whether these children display other sensory abnormalities and whether their pain hyposensitivity is the result of an elevated pain threshold or a complete insensitivity to pain. To better characterize the sensory abnormalities in this disorder, we used a combination of a mouse model of CS and pain questionnaires directed at nonverbal patients with CS.

Microlearning in Complex Surgical Oncology: Proof of Concept and Impact on Surgical Skills Acquisition During Residency.

Background: Recent structural changes to residency programs, such as workforce shortages and work-hour restrictions, have reduced operating room exposition for residents in surgical specialties. Complementary strategies need to be developed to support surgical educators and provide residents with the optimal learning environment. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of integrating microlearning in a general surgery residency program and to evaluate its impact on surgical skills acquisition in surgical oncology.

Search for Fractionally Charged Particles with CUORE.

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5  cm×5  cm×5  cm TeO_{2} crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130}Te. Unprecedented in size among cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic throughgoing particles. Using the first tonne year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various standard model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter.

Low Back Pain During and After Spaceflight: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

Space flights can produce physiological changes in the spine, leading to the development of acute and chronic pain in passengers. However, there is a lack of comprehensive literature exploring physiological spine changes and acute and chronic pain in space passengers (astronauts and animals). The first aim of this study was to identify the physiological changes experienced by passengers (humans and animals) after space flight.

The proteomic landscape of extracellular vesicles derived from human intervertebral disc cells.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) function as biomarkers and are crucial in cell communication and regulation, with therapeutic potential for intervertebral disc (IVD)-related low back pain (LBP). EV cargo is often affected by tissue health, which may affect the therapeutic potential. There is currently limited knowledge of how the cargo of IVD cell-derived EVs varies with tissue health and how differences in proteomic profile affect the predicted biological functions.

Discovering the invisible: Transformative learning experiences of midwifery students to support physiological birth during continuity of care placements in Québec's freestanding birth centres.

Background: Despite international consensus advocating a physiological approach to childbirth, there are inconsistent opinions on how to acquire the competencies needed to successfully carry out this approach. While continuity of care experiences (CoCE) within placements is a valued educational strategy, there are limited studies that focus on the learning experiences to support physiological birth.

Aim: To describe and understand the learning experiences related to physiological birth, as well as the transformations required to become a midwife who supports physiological birth, during the CoCE placement process in a birth centre.

Social cognition is commonly altered in people with psychosis. Two main brain networks have been implicated: the default-mode network (DMN), which is associated with socio-cognitive processing, and the salience network (SN) associated with socio-affective processing. Disturbances to the resting-state functional connectivity of these networks have been identified in schizophrenia and high-risk individuals, but there have been no studies in adolescents displaying distinct trajectories of subclinical psychotic-like experiences (PLEs).

Oncological outcomes of tumor ablation compared to surgical resection in early-stage hepatocellular carcinomas: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

Background: The optimal choice of treatment for early-stage hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) remains controversial, with recent conflicted guidelines. This systematic review evaluated whether ablation is oncologically non-inferior to surgical resection.

Methods: We performed a systematic search of the EMBASE, MEDLINE, CENTRAL and Web of Science databases to identify randomized controlled trials comparing tumor ablation and surgical resection for early-stage HCCs.

Uncovering the state of knowledge about healthcare gentrification: a scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Healthcare gentrification is the process in which the distribution of healthcare resources within a neighbourhood affects residents' access to healthcare services. To understand the complexity of healthcare access and to consider the socio-structural dimensions affecting equity in access to care, we aim to explore how healthcare gentrification has been described in the scientific literature and to document the reported relations between gentrification and healthcare access.

Methods And Analysis: We will conduct a scoping review from data published from inception to September 2024 based on the methodology developed by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and improved by Levac (2010).

Cognitive and affective theory of mind in young and elderly patients with multiple sclerosis.

Theory of mind (ToM) deficits have been reported in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, most studies have used pictures or written scenarios as stimuli without distinguishing between cognitive and affective ToM, and no studies have investigated older pwMS. We recruited 13 young healthy controls (HC), 14 young pwMS, 14 elderly HC and 15 elderly pwMS.

Bone Allograft Pedicle Screw Augmentation: A Biomechanical Study.

Study Design: We performed a comprehensive cadaveric biomechanical study to compare the fixation strength of primary screws, screws augmented with bone allograft, and screws augmented with polymethylmethacrylate cement.

Objective: To evaluate a novel technique for screw augmentation using morselized cortico-cancellous bone allograft to fill the widened screw track of failed pedicle screws.

Background: To date, there are no known biological methods available for failed pedicle screw augmentation or fixation.

External validation of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center preoperative nomogram predicting lymph node invasion in a cohort of high-grade prostate cancer patients.

Background: Commonly used preoperative nomograms predicting clinical and pathological outcomes in prostate cancer (PCa) patients have not been yet validated in high-grade only PCa patients. Our objective is to perform an external validation of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) preoperative nomogram as a predictor of lymph node invasion (LNI) in a cohort of high-grade PCa patients.

Methods: We included patients with high-grade PCa (Gleason ≥8) treated at our institution between 2011 and 2020 with radical prostatectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection without receiving neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy.

Purpose: Pain is an understudied physiological effect of spaceflight. Changes in inflammatory and tissue degradation markers are often associated with painful conditions. Our aim was to evaluate the changes in markers associated with tissue deterioration after a short-term spaceflight.

Neurocognitive consequences of adolescent sleep disruptions and their relationship to psychosis vulnerability: a longitudinal cohort study.

Adolescence is a key period for neurocognitive maturation where deviation from normal developmental trajectories may be tied to adverse mental health outcomes. Cognitive disruptions have been noted in populations at risk for psychosis and are known to accompany periods of sleep deprivation. This study aims to assess the role of cognition as a mediator between sleep disruptions and psychosis risk.

Barriers and enablers to the implementation of patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs/PREMs): protocol for an umbrella review.

Background: Patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs, respectively) are evidence-based, standardized questionnaires that can be used to capture patients' perspectives of their health and health care. While substantial investments have been made in the implementation of PROMs and PREMs, their use remains fragmented and limited in many settings. Analysis of multi-level barriers and enablers to the implementation of PROMs and PREMs has been hampered by the lack of use of state-of-the-art implementation science frameworks.

Augmentation of musculoskeletal soft tissue morphology within low back pain patients may suggest the presence of physiological stress shielding: An in vivo study.

Introduction: The pathomechanism of low back pain (LBP) remains unknown. However, changes to mechanical properties of soft tissues affected by LBP may indicate the presence of stress shielding, which may manifest via tissue remodeling. This study investigates the potential for physiological stress shielding within the lumbar spine by examining differences within lumbar soft tissue morphology between control and LBP subjects.
