[Flushing the canine prepuce before mating, useful or not?].

Objective: Various facultative pathogenic bacteria have been detected in the dog's prepuce. To prevent the transmission of these bacteria, some breeders flush the prepuce of their stud dogs before mating. The purpose of this study is to find out whether preputial flushing is medically useful before mating.

Vitrification and in-straw warming do not affect pregnancy rates of biopsied bovine embryos.

In the cattle industry, in vivo or in vitro embryo production combined with genotyping and cryopreservation technologies allows the selection and conservation of embryos carrying genes for desirable traits. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of a vitrification method suitable for in-straw warming of biopsied in vivo derived (IVD) bovine embryos. Three experiments were carried out using two methodologies: the Cryotop®, the gold standard vitrification and 3-step warming methodology, or the VitTrans, a vitrification/in-straw 1-step warming method that enables direct embryo transfer to the uterus.

Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations in queens throughout the estrous cycle.

Studies in cats and dogs have proven the usefulness of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) as a diagnostic tool to determine the castration status or to diagnose ovarian remnant syndrome. Yet the secretion pattern of AMH over the estrous cycle in queens has not been investigated so far. Seven healthy sexually intact female cats were examined daily for signs of estrous behavior over a trial period of 4 months.

Equine Arteritis Virus (EAV) Outbreak in a Show Stallion Population.

(1) Background: Equine arteritis virus (EAV) infection causes reproductive losses and systemic vasculitis in susceptible . The intact male becomes the virus' reservoir upon EAV infection, as it causes a chronic-persistent infection of the accessory sex glands. Infected semen is the main source of virus transmission.

Serum anti-Müllerian hormone concentration as a diagnostic tool to identify testicular tissue in canine disorders of sexual development.

Disorders of sexual development (DSD) may have their origin in alterations of the chromosomal, gonadal or phenotypic sex. Affected animals are usually presented because of ambiguous external genitalia, seldom because of reproductive disorders. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is secreted in the gonads with higher amounts in males than in females and can be used to identify gonadal tissue in sexually normally developed dogs.

[Birth of a vital puppy following prolonged whelping in a Labrador Retriever].

An 8-year-old primiparous Labrador Retriever bitch was presented to the clinic 46 hours following the delivery of 2 vital and one stillborn puppy due to an increase of vaginal discharge. At the veterinary clinic, the dog spontaneously delivered an additional healthy puppy without any obstetric support. The findings of the general and gynaecological examinations as well as results of blood analyses were within normal limits.

Semen parameters and testicular dimensions in small breed dogs below ten-kilogram bodyweight.

Because of few available data on semen parameters in small breed dogs, the study aimed to analyse semen and measure testes of dogs ≤10.0 kg bodyweight. Semen was collected from 41 fertile stud dogs, which were divided based on bodyweight: group 1 ≤ 5.

Toward evidence-based severity assessment in rat models with repeated seizures: I. Electrical kindling.

Objective: Rodent epilepsy models can significantly contribute to our understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and to validation of biomarker and target candidates. Evidence-based severity assessment is a presupposition for the ethical evaluation of animal experimentation allowances as well as for the development of efficacious refinement concepts.

Methods: Aiming to improve our understanding of the impact of experimental procedures and repeated seizures, we have completed a comprehensive behavioral and biochemical analysis assessing various parameters that can inform about the influence of an electrical kindling paradigm on well-being in rats.

The Munich MIDY Pig Biobank - A unique resource for studying organ crosstalk in diabetes.

Objective: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus and associated complications is steadily increasing. As a resource for studying systemic consequences of chronic insulin insufficiency and hyperglycemia, we established a comprehensive biobank of long-term diabetic transgenic pigs, a model of mutant gene-induced diabetes of youth (MIDY), and of wild-type (WT) littermates.

Methods: Female MIDY pigs (n = 4) were maintained with suboptimal insulin treatment for 2 years, together with female WT littermates (n = 5).

Histopathologic examination of the genital tract in rabbits treated once or twice with a slow-release deslorelin implant for reversible suppression of ovarian function.

A total of 13 rabbits were treated with a subcutaneous deslorelin long-term release implant (4.7 mg) to study the effect on ovarian function and histologic features of the uterus. Seven rabbits (group 1) were implanted with a slow-release deslorelin implant before onset of puberty for 273 days as a part of a previous study.

Sperm membrane integrity in fresh and frozen-thawed canine semen samples: a comparison of vital stains with the NucleoCounter SP-100.

The objective of this study was to assess sperm membrane integrity in canine semen samples using three different vital stains and the NucleoCounter SP-100 (NC). In addition, the occurrence of half-stained sperm heads, the influence of investigator, and storage-related artifacts using stained smears were examined. Forty fresh (30 dogs) and 40 frozen-thawed (28 dogs) canine semen samples were analyzed.

Reversible estrous cycle suppression in prepubertal female rabbits treated with slow-release deslorelin implants.

The aim of this study was to examine the long-term effect of a 4.7-mg deslorelin GnRH analog implant on ovarian function in the prepubertal female rabbit. Seven female rabbits (group 1) were treated with the implant at the age of 60 days.

Quantitative determination of progesterone (P4) in canine blood serum using an enzyme-linked fluorescence assay.

Progesterone (P4) measurement in the peripheral blood is an objective parameter for determination of reproductive functions in the bitch. This study evaluates an enzyme-linked fluorescence assay (ELFA) (Biomerieux, France) for the determination of progesterone validated for use in human. The ELFA is to be performed on the MiniVidas automated analyser which provides quantitative results within 45 min.

Estrus induction in Beagle bitches with the GnRH-agonist implant containing 4.7 mg Deslorelin.

Estrogens, gonadotrophins, dopamine agonists, gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) and its agonists have been used for estrus induction in bitches. A long acting GnRH agonist implant (4.7 mg Deslorelin; Suprelorin®, Virbac) with a continuous hormone release has been developed for suppression of sexual function in male dogs.

Microarray analysis of equine endometrium at days 8 and 12 of pregnancy.

Establishment and maintenance of pregnancy in equids is only partially understood. To provide new insights into early events of this process, we performed a systematic analysis of transcriptome changes in the endometrium at Days 8 and 12 of pregnancy. Endometrial biopsy samples from pregnant and nonpregnant stages were taken from the same mares.

Effect of post-IVF developmental kinetics on in vitro survival of vitrified-warmed domestic cat blastocysts.

A limited number of reports is available on cryopreservation of in vitro fertilization (IVF)-derived cat blastocysts. In the present study, IVF-derived domestic cat embryos which reached the blastocyst stage either on day 6 or day 7 were cryopreserved by vitrification using Cryotop as a cryodevice. Fresh control and post-warm surviving blastocysts were examined by differential cell staining with Hoechst 33342 and propidium iodide to determine total cell number and inner cell mass (ICM) ratio, and the post-warm survival rate was determined by re-expansion of the blastocoel during 24 h of in vitro culture.
