Work-related psychosocial hazards have a significant influence on the development of musculoskeletal and mental health disorders (MSDs and MHDs). This study used behavioural change theory to guide understanding of barriers and enablers for leaders working in the Heavy Vehicle Road Transport industry, to address workplace psychosocial hazards. The findings will be used to inform design of a future intervention to support leaders to more effectively address these hazards.

Article Synopsis
  • A virtual surgery planning (VSP) tool has been developed to help surgeons visualize and modify obstructive tissue in endoscopic sinus surgeries using patient-specific CT data, improving functional outcomes like nasal airflow.
  • The tool provides real-time feedback on airflow resistance and pressure, allowing for iterative adjustments until optimal results are achieved.
  • In a proof-of-concept case with a patient experiencing olfactory losses, the VSP tool showed that a medial partial middle turbinectomy resulted in better airflow compared to traditional methods, highlighting its potential as a valuable preoperative planning resource.

Introduction: Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling has previously indicated that distorted nasal airflow patterns may contribute to empty nose syndrome (ENS); however, no data show that aggressive turbinate surgery always leads to ENS. We aim to use virtual surgery planning (VSP) to investigate how a total inferior turbinectomy affects airflow parameters compared with ENS patients.

Methods: We retrospectively recruited six nasal obstruction patients who underwent turbinate reduction surgery.

Background: A patient's subjective response to topical nasal decongestant is often used to screen for turbinate reduction surgery suitability. However, this anecdotal strategy has not been objectively and quantitatively evaluated.

Methods: Prospective, longitudinal, and single-blinded cohort study employing computational fluid dynamic modeling based on computed tomography scans at baseline, 30 min postoxymetazoline, and 2 months postsurgery on 11 patients with chronic turbinate hypertrophy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardioneuroablation targeting autonomic nerves is used in treating atrial fibrillation (AF), with the study suggesting that incidental ablation might enhance the effectiveness of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI).
  • The researchers evaluated patients who underwent PVI from 2021 to 2023, finding that electrograms in areas related to ganglionated plexus (GP) largely overlap with the ablation lesions.
  • Out of 52 patients, 96% showed accidental overlap between PVI and GP areas, with those regions having a significant link to improved heart rate and reduced recurrence of AF over the following months.

Background: Undergraduate training in hand hygiene is a keystone of infection control. Several studies have shown overconfidence effects in hand hygiene practices, which can impair metacognition. We hypothesized that overconfidence might be prevalent in the early education stages of nursing students and that these effects could be reduced through frequent interactive learning formats, such as learning groups.

Hypophosphatasia is a rare genetic disease characterized by abnormal alkaline phosphatase activity and deficiency of bone and teeth mineralization. Hypophosphatasia is well known in pediatrics with typical presentations in children, but mild forms can also be present in adults and are difficult to detect. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman referred for pain management, with a previous diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

Background: Optimal initial exposure through an extended endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for suprasellar craniopharyngiomas ensures safe and unrestricted surgical access while avoiding overexposure, which may prolong the procedure and increase neurovascular adverse events.

Method: Here, the authors outline the surgical nuances of a customized bony and dural opening through the transplanum/transtuberculum and transclival variants of the extended EEA to suprasellar craniopharyngiomas based on the tumor-pituitary stalk relationship. A stepwise cadaveric dissection and intraoperative photographs relevant to the approaches are also provided.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the current curricular status of content on infection prevention in hospitals during medical education prior to the development of a serious game on infection prevention in hospitals. In addition, the data collected was to be contrasted with the training for a specialist nurse in hygiene and infection prevention (FKHI).

Methodology: In an online survey, persons in charge of medical degree programs and continuing education centers for FKHI, SkillsLabs and professional associations in Germany were asked to answer 28 questions on framework conditions, teaching, examinations, and gamification.

Not every Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is confined within the sella between the posterior and anterior lobes of the pituitary gland. Intracranial ectopic RCCs are extremely rare, with only seven cases reported in the literature. In this study, the authors presented a rare case of a symptomatic ectopic retrosellar RCC posterior to the pituitary gland, causing extensive clival erosion.

The target asymmetry , recoil asymmetry , and beam-target double polarization observable were determined in exclusive and photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass.

Objectives: Oxymetazoline relieves nasal obstructive symptoms via vasoconstriction, however, the changes in nasal structures and aerodynamics that impact symptoms the most remain unclear.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal, and single blinded cohort study applied Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling based on CT scans at baseline and post-oxymetazoline on 13 consecutive patients with chronic nasal obstruction secondary to inferior turbinate hypertrophy from a tertiary medical center. To account for placebo effect, a sham saline spray was administered with subject blindfolded prior to oxymetazoline, with 30 min rest in between.
