Preclinical work supports a role for the peripheral chemoreceptors in the progression of cardiovascular and metabolic pathologies. In the present study, we examined peripheral chemosensitivity in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the contribution of the peripheral chemoreceptors to resting cardiovascular and metabolic control. We hypothesized that: (1) adults with T2D exhibit exaggerated peripheral chemoreflex sensitivity; (2) the peripheral chemoreceptors contribute to cardiovascular dysfunction in T2D; and (3) attenuation of peripheral chemoreceptor activity improves glucose tolerance in T2D.

Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in aerosol particles is important for the climate system due to its potential to impact heterogeneous chemistry, cloud condensation nuclei, and new particle growth. Our group and others have shown a lower separation relative humidity for submicron particles, but whether the suppression is due to thermodynamics or kinetics is unclear. Herein, we characterize the experimental LLPS phase diagram of submicron 2-methylglutaric acid and ammonium sulfate aerosol particles and compare it to that of supermicron-sized particles.

Recent work has shown that machine learning (ML) models can skillfully forecast the dynamics of unknown chaotic systems. Short-term predictions of the state evolution and long-term predictions of the statistical patterns of the dynamics ("climate") can be produced by employing a feedback loop, whereby the model is trained to predict forward only one time step, then the model output is used as input for multiple time steps. We tested the effects of prolonged voluntary wheel running on the muscle function of mdx mice treated with one of two different microdystrophin constructs. At 7 weeks of age mdx mice were injected with a single dose of AAV9-CK8-microdystrophin with (gene therapy 1, GT1) or without (gene therapy 2, GT2) the nNOS-binding domain and were assigned to one of four gene therapy treated groups: mdxRGT1 (run, GT1), mdxGT1 (no run, GT1), or mdxRGT2 (run,GT2), mdxGT2 (no run, GT2). Nemaline myopathy (NM) is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous disease that is diagnosed on the basis of the presence of nemaline rods on skeletal muscle biopsy. Although NM has typically been classified by causative genes, disease severity or prognosis cannot be predicted. The common pathologic end point of nemaline rods (despite diverse genetic causes) and an unexplained range of muscle weakness suggest that shared secondary processes contribute to the pathogenesis of NM.

Repeat exposures to low oxygen (intermittent hypoxia, IH), like that observed in sleep apnea, elicit increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and blood pressure (BP) in men. Endothelin (ET) receptor antagonists can attenuate the sympathetic and BP response to IH in rodents; whether these data translate to humans are unclear. We hypothesized that ET-receptor antagonism would ameliorate any rise in MSNA and BP following acute IH in humans.

Background: Young Black women between the ages of 18 and 24 years are disproportionately impacted by HIV, yet they have a low self-perception of HIV risk and limited exposure to prevention strategies. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective biomedical HIV prevention strategy for those at risk for HIV infection, but uptake has been slow among cisgender women. Family planning clinics are a primary source of health care access for young women, providing an ideal opportunity to integrate PrEP information and care into existing clinic practices.
