Background: The objective of this study was to propose a novel classification for lateral polydactyly of the foot that integrates both visual appearance and radiographic findings and to delineate surgical techniques and their outcomes based on this classification.
Methods: This study enrolled 148 feet from 126 patients who underwent initial surgery at our hospital between January 2009 and July 2021. The new classification system was derived from visual appearance according to the Hirase classification and radiological bifurcation level (D: distal or middle phalanx, P: proximal phalanx, and M: metatarsal).

Factors explaining individual variations in whole body sweat sodium ion concentration ([Na]) during exercise are not fully understood. Galvanic skin conductance (GSC) reflects the electrical properties of the skin influenced by sweat rate (SR) and the presence of ions. Initiation of increases in this response to elevating sweating may reflect exceeding the maximal capacity of sweat ion reabsorption in sweat glands.

The physiological mechanisms involved in augmented cholinergic agonist-induced sweating in exercise-trained individuals remain unclear. This study hypothesizes that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to augmented pilocarpine-induced sweating in habitually exercise-trained individuals. Endurance-trained and untrained men ( = 15 each) iontophoretically received 1% L-NAME, a NOS inhibitor, and saline (control) in the forearm and then administered 0.

Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) is known for its association with obesity and cardiovascular morbidity, which are also characteristic features of OSA. This study aims to investigate whether the prevalence of PRISm increases according to apnea-hypopnea index levels among subjects with OSA.

The increasing prevalence of complex (MAC) pulmonary disease poses a significant therapeutic challenge, particularly due to the limited efficacy and systemic toxicity associated with conventional guideline-based therapy. Amikacin liposome inhalation suspension (ALIS) has been developed, yet its real-world application remains underreported. This retrospective analysis, conducted from March 2021 to February 2024, examined ALIS's clinical use in patients aged 20 years or older with refractory MAC pulmonary disease at our institution.

In this report, we detail the case of a 73-year-old patient with acute exacerbation of IPF and simultaneous emergence of cardiac amyloidosis. The patient's clinical journey began with persistent exertional dyspnea, progressing to hypoxemia on admission.

Although GIT studies have utilized various animal models, few effectively model spontaneous slow GIT.
Aims: We aimed to characterize the GIT phenotype of CFP/Yit (CFP), an inbred mouse strain with suggested slow GIT.
This report presents the case of a 42-year-old Japanese woman with recurrent hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who developed eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) during treatment with abemaciclib combined with endocrine therapy. Seven years after a radical surgery and definite diagnosis of Stage I breast cancer, her cancer recurred with metastases to multiple organs. Initially treated with abemaciclib plus letrozole and goserelin for 3 months, she developed EP, which improved after the discontinuation of anti-cancer treatment and the administration of prednisolone.

The patient presented with chief complaints of dyspnea on exertion, dry cough, and fatigue. A high-resolution chest CT scan revealed diffuse, unevenly distributed ground-glass opacities throughout both lungs.

In a randomized crossover, single-blinded protocol (clinical trials registry: UMIN000042644), 14 young physically active adults (three women) consumed 1 L of beverage containing either 7% glycerol + 0.5% sodium (Gly + Na), Gly + Na plus 7% sucrose (Gly + Na + Suc), Gly + Na plus 7% isomaltulose (Gly + Na + Iso), or water (CON) over a 40 min period.

Despite the absence of any smoking or dust exposure history, multiple cystic lesions were apparent in both lungs on her CT scan. We suspected Sjögren's syndrome-associated lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) due to her additional symptoms of dry mouth and eyes.

The patient had contracted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia a year earlier and exhibited persistent hypogammaglobulinemia. Chest CT scans revealed wondering ground-glass opacities and consolidations initially suggestive of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Organizing pneumonia (OP) is recognized as a nonspecific lung injury response characterized histopathologically by the presence of intra-alveolar buds of granulation tissue. Most OP patients show excellent responses to corticosteroids, but relapse is frequently seen when corticosteroids are tapered or discontinued. Although several factors associated with relapse have been reported in cryptogenic OP (COP), the clinical features and risk factors associated with relapse in connective tissue disease-associated OP (CTD-OP) have yet to be fully understood.

She exhibited acute respiratory failure necessitating 4 L/minute of nasal oxygen at maximum. Chest CT images showed diffuse centrilobular ground-glass opacities with mosaic attenuation and consolidation areas in the lower lobes of both lungs.

We hypothesized that individual gut microbiota variations could contribute to CYP activity. Human flora-associated (HFA) mice are established from germ-free mice using human feces and are often used to determine the effect of the human gut microbiota on the host.

Modern evolutionary game theory typically deals with the evolution of continuous, quantitative traits under weak selection, allowing the incorporation of rich biological detail and complicated nonlinear interactions. While these models are commonly used to find candidates for evolutionary endpoints and to approximate evolutionary trajectories, a less appreciated property is their potential to expose and clarify the causal structure of evolutionary processes. The mathematical step of differentiation breaks a nonlinear model into additive components which are more intuitive to interpret, and when combined with a proper causal hypothesis, partial derivatives in such models have a causal meaning.

Posteromedial displacement of the distal fragment was so severe that the tip of the proximal fragment protruded subcutaneously at the anterolateral aspect of the antecubital fossa. Immediate surgical exploration was performed to reveal radial nerve laceration.

Objective: Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to delineate upper motor neuron (UMN) signs of two neurodegenerative disorders: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple system atrophy (MSA).
Methods: Medical records including clinical signs for UMN damage and TMS results were reviewed retrospectively. The UMN signs were classified into none, mild, and severe based on neurological examination of various reflexes.
Background: Acute exacerbation (AE) is a life-threatening clinical event that occurs during the clinical course of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Several studies have reported that AE also occurs in interstitial lung disease (ILD) other than IPF. However, the incidence, clinical features, risk factors for AE, and major causes of death in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated ILD (ANCA-ILD) patients have not been well established.

Evolutionary theory has made large impacts on our understanding and management of the world, in part because it has been able to incorporate new data and new insights successfully. Nonetheless, there is currently a tension between certain biological phenomena and mainstream evolutionary theory. For example, how does the inheritance of molecular epigenetic changes fit into mainstream evolutionary theory? Is niche construction an evolutionary process? Is local adaptation via habitat choice also adaptive evolution? These examples suggest there is scope (and perhaps even a need) to broaden our views on evolution.
