Environmental applications of graphene (GN) are limited by the occurrence of aggregation. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized, reduced to GN by ascorbic acid, and intercalated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). GN-CTAB was characterized by Boehm's titration, N adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy.

Background: As methotrexate (MTX) is a widely used treatment for psoriasis, it is important to gain insight into the reasons for the discontinuation of MTX and to understand the determinants for drug survival.

Objectives: To describe 5-year drug survival for MTX in patients with psoriasis, split according to different reasons for discontinuation, and to identify the determinants for drug survival.

Methods: Data were extracted from a prospective psoriasis registry of patients treated with MTX (MTX-CAPTURE).

Sludge from paper mill effluent treatment as raw material to produce carbon adsorbents: An alternative waste management strategy.

Pulp and paper industry produces massive amounts of sludge from wastewater treatment, which constitute an enormous environmental challenge. A possible management option is the conversion of sludge into carbon-based adsorbents to be applied in water remediation. For such utilization it is important to investigate if sludge is a consistent raw material originating reproducible final materials (either over time or from different manufacturing processes), which is the main goal of this work.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have largely proven to be effective tools for conserving marine ecosystem, while socio-economic benefits generated by MPAs to fisheries are still under debate. Many MPAs embed a no-take zone, aiming to preserve natural populations and ecosystems, within a buffer zone where potentially sustainable activities are allowed. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) within buffer zones can be highly beneficial by promoting local socio-economies.

Key Points: E74-like factor 3 (ELF3) is a transcription factor regulated by inflammation in different physio-pathological situations. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) emerged as a relevant adipokine involved in the regulation of inflammation. In this study we showed for the first time the involvement of ELF3 in the control of LCN2 expression and its cooperation with nuclear factor-κB (NFκB).

Removal of tricaine methanesulfonate from aquaculture wastewater by adsorption onto pyrolysed paper mill sludge.

Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) has been widely used in intensive aquaculture systems to control stress during handling and confinement operations. This compound is dissolved in the water tanks and, once it is present in the Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RASs), MS-222 can reach the environment by the discharge of contaminated effluents. The present work proposes the implementation of the adsorption process in the RASs, using pyrolysed biological paper mill sludge as adsorbent, to remove MS-222 from aquaculture wastewater.

Aim: To evaluate changes in the resident microbial population in the cranial vaginal mucosa induced by a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) compared to the vaginal microbiota of cows with reproductive disorders.

Methods And Results: Vaginal discharge was evaluated by clinical examination and a Vaginitis Diagnosis Score was performed by exfoliative cytology. All samples classified as positive and some classified as negative by clinical evaluation were later diagnosed as positive for vaginitis by cytological analysis.

Non-lethal biological techniques such as blood biomarkers have gained attention due to their value as early signals of anthropic effects of contamination representing significant tools to evaluate ecosystems health. We evaluate and characterize in situ genotoxicity of water samples collected from aquatic ecosystems around a fluorite mine using amphibian frogs Hypsiboas cordobae as bioindicator species complemented with 16 physicochemical parameters. Four stations associated with fluorite mine sampling were sampled: a stream running on granitic rock with natural high fluorite content; two streams both running on metamorphic rock with low fluorite content; and an artificial decantation pond containing sediments produced by fluorite flotation process with high variation in physicochemical parameters.

Tailored Therapist-Guided Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Psoriasis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: Patients with somatic conditions, such as psoriasis, frequently suffer from high burden of their disease in daily life and might benefit from internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) tailored to their adjustment problems. The aim of this multicenter randomized controlled trial was to examine the effects of therapist-guided, individually tailored ICBT in a clinical sample of patients with psoriasis.

Methods: A total of 131 patients with psoriasis, who were screened for a psychological risk profile, were randomized to either care as usual (CAU, n = 66) or ICBT in addition to CAU (n = 65).

Social referencing may play an important role in the acquisition of this fear and could be a key determinant in future biomarkers and treatment pathways. Frequency and predictors of a high clinical response in patients with psoriasis on biological therapy in daily practice: results from the prospective, multicenter BioCAPTURE cohort.

Background: It is important to assess which patients with psoriasis are more likely to achieve high clinical responses on biologics.

Objectives: To assess the number of treatment episodes (TEs) that achieve a 100% improvement in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 100), PASI 90 or PASI ≤ 5 at week 24 of biological treatment, and which baseline patient characteristics predict treatment response.

Methods: Data from patients with psoriasis treated with adalimumab, etanercept, infliximab or ustekinumab were extracted from a prospective cohort.

Comparative valorisation of agricultural and industrial biowastes by combustion and pyrolysis.

Combustion and pyrolysis processes were assessed and compared for two types of lignocellulosic biowastes: agricultural (Eucalyptus bark, grape seeds, peach stones, walnut shells, olive waste and peanut shells) and industrial (primary and biological paper mill sludge) biowastes. They were characterized by elemental, proximate and thermal analyses; the pyrolysis behaviour was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and the gases produced were identified using mass spectrometry. Agricultural biowastes showed the highest calorific values, close to the fossil fuel values (20-30MJkg(-1)) and, in general, emission of gases containing the carbon element (CH4, C2H2, CO and CO2) was higher than that of the tested industrial biowastes, making the agricultural biowastes highly competitive for combustion applications such as gas fuel.

Llama represents for the Andean regions a valid alternative to bovine and pork meat and thanks to the high proteins and low fat content; it can constitute a good product for the novel food market. In this study, culture-dependent and independent methods were applied to investigate the microbial ecology of naturally fermented llama sausages produced in Northwest Argentina. Two different production technologies of llama sausage were investigated: a pilot-plant scale (P) and an artisanal one (A).

Paracetamol and salicylic acid removal from contaminated water by microalgae.

The biomass growth, pharmaceutical removal and light conversion efficiency of Chlorella sorokiniana under the presence of paracetamol (PC) and salicylic acid (SaC) were assessed and compared at two different concentrations of these pharmaceuticals (I: 25 mg l, II: 250 mg l). Microalgae were resistant to these concentrations and, moreover, their growth was significantly stimulated (p ≤ 0.05) under these drugs (biomass concentration increased above 33% PCI, 35% SaCI, 13% PCII and 45% SaCII, as compared with the respective positive controls).

A model to characterize the response of a thin media that can exhibit more than one nonlocal nonlinear response when it is illuminated with a Gaussian beam in a z-scan experiment is proposed. The model considers that these nonlocal contributions can be treated as independent contributions in the refractive or absorptive nonlinear response. Numerical results for two nonlocal nonlinear contributions with different magnitudes between them are presented.

Photodegradation behaviour of estriol: An insight on natural aquatic organic matter influence.

Estriol (E3) is one of the steroidal estrogens ubiquitously found in the aquatic environment, photodegradation being an important pathway for the elimination of such endocrine disrupting compounds. However, it is important to understand how environmentally important components present in aquatic matrices, such as organic matter, may affect their photodegradation. The main objective of this work was to investigate the photodegradation of E3 in water, under simulated solar radiation, as well as the effect of humic substances (HS - humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA) and XAD-4 fraction) in E3 photodegradation.

ELF3 modulates type II collagen gene (COL2A1) transcription in chondrocytes by inhibiting SOX9-CBP/p300-driven histone acetyltransferase activity.

Aim: We showed previously that E74-like factor 3 (ELF3) protein levels are increased in osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage, that ELF3 accounts for inflammatory cytokine-driven MMP13 gene expression, and that, upon induction by interleukin-1β, ELF3 binds to the COL2A1 promoter and suppresses its activity in chondrocytes. Here, we aimed to further investigate the mechanism/s by which ELF3 represses COL2A1 transcription in chondrocytes.

Methods And Results: We report that ELF3 inhibits Sox9-driven COL2A1 promoter activity by interfering with the activator functions of CBP/300 and Sox9.
