Bees play a crucial role as pollinating insects in both natural and cultivated areas. However, the use of pesticides, such as thiamethoxam, has been identified as a contributing factor compromising bee health. The current risk assessment primarily relies on the model species Apis mellifera, raising concerns about the applicability of these assessments to other bee groups, including stingless bees.

Article Synopsis
  • - Transmissible cancers like bivalve transmissible neoplasia (BTN) can spread between marine organisms, particularly affecting species like the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa.
  • - Researchers examined over 6,800 cockles, diagnosed 390 cases of BTN tumors, and analyzed genomic variation in 61 tumors, confirming the presence of two BTN lineages with links to blood cell origins.
  • - The study found significant genomic instability in the BTN tumors, including whole-genome duplications and mutations, and suggested a long history of clonal evolution in these transmissible cancers.

Climate change is expected to increase the number of days with meteorological conditions conducive to uncontrollable wildfires. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the capacity of wildfire-prone regions to minimize the adverse impacts of these wildfires by creating resilient landscapes. In this paper we develop a participatory multi-criteria evaluation to identify and map landscape values and prioritize areas according to these values in the Montseny Biophere Reserve (Catalonia, NE Spain).

Article Synopsis
  • Most cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), often develop through genomic changes that promote tumor growth, with specific focus on the effects of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).
  • HBV integrates its DNA into the tumor genome, leading to significant alterations like chromosomal fusions and deletions, contributing to cancer development in about 8% of HCC cases.
  • These mutations usually happen early in liver cancer evolution, sometimes up to 20 years before a cancer is diagnosed, highlighting the need to study liver cancer genomes for potential HBV-related changes.

  • The study investigates the use of baculovirus AcMNPV as a vaccine vector to induce immune responses in swine, particularly focusing on its ability to generate interferon (IFN) and combat viral infections.
  • AcMNPV effectively stimulated IFN-α production in porcine blood cells and demonstrated antiviral activity against viruses like FMDV and VSV in both test tubes and infected piglets.
  • The research found that modifying AcMNPV with the VSV-G protein enhanced IFN-α production, suggesting that AcMNPV could be optimized for better effects in antiviral strategies against swine viruses.

This article presents a meta-analysis of the validity of cognitive reflection (CR) for predicting job performance and training proficiency. It also examines the incremental validity of CR over cognitive intelligence (CI) for predicting these two occupational criteria. CR proved to be an excellent predictor of job performance and training proficiency, and the magnitude of the true validity was very similar across the two criteria.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as monotherapy in different solid tumors showed an early detrimental effect in a subset of patients reflected by the early crossover of the progression-free survival (PFS) curves. Currently, combination therapies with ICIs added to chemotherapy or targeted therapy are expanding the landscape of metastatic solid tumors. We have examined the benefits and risks of adding ICIs to the standard of care (SOC) versus SOC alone.

Increasing evidence-synthesized in this paper-shows that economic growth contributes to biodiversity loss via greater resource consumption and higher emissions. Nonetheless, a review of international biodiversity and sustainability policies shows that the majority advocate economic growth. Since improvements in resource use efficiency have so far not allowed for absolute global reductions in resource use and pollution, we question the support for economic growth in these policies, where inadequate attention is paid to the question of how growth can be decoupled from biodiversity loss.

Combination treatment (chemotherapy plus immune checkpoint blockade [ICB]) has shown promising activity in terms of efficacy, but it has been suggested that its toxicity profile is less favorable compared to monotherapy. We conducted a meta-analysis of published randomized clinical trials comparing combination treatment to monotherapy (chemotherapy or ICB) in patients with metastatic solid tumors. Differences in rates of safety issues (all-grade adverse events, grade 3/4 adverse events, treatment-related deaths, treatment discontinuations) between groups were estimated.

Participatory planning networks made of government agencies, stakeholders, citizens and scientists are receiving attention as a potential pathway to build resilient landscapes in the face of increased wildfire impacts due to suppression policies and land-use and climate changes. A key challenge for these networks lies in incorporating local knowledge and social values about landscape into operational wildfire management strategies. As large wildfires overcome the suppression capacity of the fire departments, such strategies entail difficult decisions about intervention priorities among different regions, values and socioeconomic interests.
