Olfactory and gustatory perception in Brazilian PKU patients: A cross-sectional study.

Patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) have a highly restrictive diet, which involves restriction of phenylalanine (Phe) intake and daily use of Phe-free metabolic formula. However, little is known about the potential impact of this diet on chemical senses. The present study aimed to evaluate the olfactory and gustatory perceptions of patients with PKU.

Inflammatory Profile of Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyp Patients in Brazil: Multicenter Study.

Objectives: To determine the inflammatory profile of CRSwNP in Brazil and characterize the subgroups of CRSwNP patients in this population through cluster analysis.

Study Design: Multicenter cross-sectional study involving 15 centers representing different regions of Brazil.

Subjects And Methods: Clinical data of 166 patients and 80 controls, aged 18 to 70 years old, number of surgeries for CRS, history of asthma and aspirin sensitivity, and Lund-Mackay scores on CT scans.

Brazilian guideline for the use of immunobiologicals in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps ‒ 2024 update.

Introduction: Biologics targeting type 2 inflammation have revolutionized the way we treat patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP). Particularly in severe and difficult-to-control cases, these drugs have provided a new reality for these patients, allowing for the effective and safe treatment of extensive diseases that were not completely managed with the typical strategy of surgery and topical medications.

Objectives: The experience achieved with the approval of these medications by ANVISA for use in CRSwNP and the knowledge obtained regarding outcomes, adverse effects, and the ideal patient profile prompted the update of the previously published guideline, with a detailed review of the most recent scientific literature, the personal experiences of experts, and the adaptation to the reality of the Brazilian healthcare system, both public and private.

Guideline for the use of immunobiologicals in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) in Brazil.

Introduction: Severe uncontrolled chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps has a negative impact on an individual's quality of life. Therefore, new biologics have emerged for use in specific phenotypes of chronic rhinosinusitis, changing the paradigms of its treatment.

Objective: To review the current status of biologic treatment indications in chronic rhinosinusitis.

Sialendoscopy for Improvement of Salivary Flow in Patients with Sjögren Syndrome - Comparative Analysis of Intraglandular Washing Solutions.

 Among the potential diseases that present altered salivary flow and activity is Sjögren syndrome. Sialendoscopy seems to be an important therapeutic option.  To compare the results obtained with sialendoscopy for improving salivary flow measured by scintigraphy in patients with primary Sjögren syndrome to those obtained with other intraglandular washing solutions.

Incomplete and late recovery of sudden olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19.

Introduction: Sudden olfactory dysfunction is a new symptom related to COVID-19, with little data on its duration or recovery rate.

Objective: To characterize patients with sudden olfactory dysfunction during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially their recovery data.

Methods: An online survey was conducted by the Brazilian Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervico-Facial Surgery, and Brazilian Academy of Rhinology, including doctors who assessed sudden olfactory dysfunction patients starting after February 1st, 2020.

Evaluation of the frequency of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease in adult patients with Gaucher disease type 1.

Background: Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by deficiency of beta-glucocerebrosidase (GCase) due to biallelic variations in the GBA1 gene. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative condition. The classic motor symptoms of PD may be preceded by many non-motor symptoms (NMS), which include hyposmia, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder, constipation, cognitive impairment, and depression.

Anatomical terminology of the internal nose and paranasal sinuses: cross-cultural adaptation to Portuguese.

Introduction: Functional endonasal endoscopic surgery is a frequent surgical procedure among otorhinolaryngologists. In 2014, the European Society of Rhinology published the "European Position Paper on the Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses", aiming to unify the terms in the English language. We do not yet have a unified terminology in the Portuguese language.

Differentiation between Posterior Sinuses Using the Medial Orbital Floor as a Landmark.

 This study aims to evaluate the difference in height between the floors of the posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses with respect to the medial orbital floor (MOF) to confirm this difference as a landmark for identification of the posterior sinuses. It also aims to describe this difference regarding the type of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus (conchal, presellar, and sellar).  A cross-sectional study was conducted.

Sinonasal characteristics and quality of life by SNOT-22 in adult patients with cystic fibrosis.

Unlabelled: The prevalence of chronic sinus disease in cystic fibrosis (CF) has gradually increased. Sinonasal involvement may have influence on pulmonary exacerbations and can have a negative impact on the quality of life. To evaluate nasal characteristics and quality of life in adult patients with CF; to establish an association and determine the predictors in SNOT-22 questionnaire.

The Lamb's Head as a Model for Surgical Skills Development in Endonasal Surgery.

 To test the viability of a lamb's head model for sinonasal surgery training in Brazil by comparing performance of endoscopic procedures in the septum and inferior turbinates.  Prospective study.  Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2015).

Sleep-disordered breathing in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that disease severity in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is correlated with an increased risk of sleep apnea.

Methods: A total of 34 CF patients underwent clinical and functional evaluation, as well as portable polysomnography, spirometry, and determination of IL-1β levels.

Results: Mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), SpO2 on room air, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale score were 4.

Computed tomography imaging study of the superior attachment of the uncinate process.

Background: The superior attachment of the uncinate process (SAUP) is an important landmark in the nasofrontal recess, but its anatomical distribution is still unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the location and number of superior attachments of the uncinate process on computed tomography (CT) images.

Methodology: A cross-sectional, retrospective study conducted at the Department of Radiology, Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis in cystic fibrosis: update on diagnosis and treatment.

Although cystic fibrosis (CF) is an irreversible genetic disease, advances in treatment have increased the life expectancy of CF patients. Upper airway involvement, which is mainly due to pathological changes in the paranasal sinuses, is prevalent in CF patients, although many are only mildly symptomatic (with few symptoms). The objective of this literature review was to discuss the pathophysiology and current therapeutic management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in CF patients.

An experimental model of chronic rhinosinusitis in rabbits without bacterial inoculation.

Purpose: Evaluate and compare two different experimental techniques of maxillary sinus ostium occlusion using N-butyl cyanoacrylate in developing chronic histological findings without the inoculation of pathogenic bacteria among rabbits.

Methods: In a randomized study, sixteen New Zealand rabbits were assigned for occlusion of the right maxillary sinus through a transmaxillary approach or through the roof of the nasal cavity. The contralateral sinus served as a control.

Is there a reason for performing frontal sinus trephination at 1 cm from midline? A tomographic study.

Unlabelled: The complex anatomy of the frontoethmoidal recess, as well as its anatomical relationship with the vital adjacent structures in the region explain the reason for considerable surgical care to protect these structures and minimize complications related to healing. Trephination is an accepted procedure to access the frontal sinus.

Aim: Discuss the best location for performing frontal sinus trephination.
