An internal mammary artery to pulmonary artery (IMA-PA) fistula is a very rare vascular abnormality. Patients with this disease are often asymptomatic, but they may develop symptoms such as heart failure and hemoptysis. A 60-year-old woman was incidentally diagnosed with left IMA-PA fistula by chest computed tomography (CT) during an examination for colon cancer.

We investigated these factors using a national trauma registry in Japan. We identified pediatric trauma patients aged ≤18 years, from January 2004 to May 2019.

Postoperative residual thrombi are associated with persistent pulmonary hypertension and subsequent right heart failure, resulting in poor surgical outcome. A 67-year-old man was admitted to our institution owing to dyspnea on exertion.

Neurological outcomes after poisoning-induced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (POHCA) are yet to be fully elucidated. This retrospective cohort study sought to describe the characteristics of POHCA, and identify factors associated with favourable neurologic outcomes.

The administration of adjunct clindamycin has been recommended in the treatment of NSTIs due to GAS. However, robust evidence regarding the clinical benefits of adjunct clindamycin in NSTI patients remains controversial.

However, the effectiveness of early parenteral nutrition in underweight patients has not been established. This study aimed to determine whether in-hospital outcomes were associated with early parenteral nutrition in underweight gastrointestinal surgery patients with short-term contraindications to early enteral nutrition.

However, the clinical benefits of parenteral nutrition in the early phase in this population remain unknown. We investigated the association of parenteral nutrition in the early phase with outcomes in patients with trauma who underwent emergency laparotomy.

Methods: We used the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database to identify patients with rib fractures who underwent mechanical ventilation from 1 July 2010 to 31 March 2018.
Background: The appropriate timing of rib fixation remains unclear. We investigated the efficacy of early rib fixation compared with late rib fixation, using data from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database.
Methods: We identified patients who underwent rib fixation and received mechanical ventilation from July 1, 2010, to March 31, 2018, using data from the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database in Japan.
A 16-day-old neonate with congenital complete atrioventricular block underwent epicardial pacemaker implantation under the rectus. Four months later, abodominal X-ray imaging revealed dislocation of the generator from the abdomen to the pelvis. The infant was diagnosed with intraperitoneal pacemaker dislocation.

Both surgical aneurysmectomy and endovascular coil embolization were anticipated to sacrifice IPDA, which could lead to severe acute ischemia in the celiac region. The treatment involved surgical ligation of the aneurysm after bypass grafting from the superior mesenteric artery to the anterior IPDA.

We expected that the amnion might be an ideal cell source for cardiac regenerative therapy and that the differentiation potency of the human amnion mesenchymal cells (hAMCs) could be improved by overexpression of Oct4, a key factor that maintains the undifferentiated state. A plasmid vector was made by insertion of the Oct4 open reading frame (ORF) under control of a cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter (pCMV-hOct4) and transfected into hAMCs by electroporation.

Human amniotic mesenchymal cells (hAMCs) have the potential to be a useful cell source for cardiac regeneration therapy. We attempted to isolate stem cells from hAMCs and differentiate them into cardiomyocytes.

We evaluated the early and midterm results of our strategy (a combination of the sandwich technique and direct closures) and assessed the role of the sandwich technique in the treatment of multiple ventricular septal defects.
Methods: Twenty-nine consecutive patients underwent an operation for multiple ventricular septal defects and associated cardiac malformations.

A two-month-old male infant with tetralogy of Fallot underwent a right-sided modified Blalock-Taussig shunt using a 4 mm expanded polytetrafluoroethylene graft through a right thoracotomy. Five months later, the patient developed otitis media, followed by repeated relapses of pneumonia and fever of unknown origin. Multidetector-row computed tomography and angiography, performed at 12 months of age, revealed a pseudoaneurysm of the subclavian artery at the insertion of the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt.

No serious complications as a result of hemolysis occurred in the perioperative period. Open heart surgery can therefore be safely performed in young children with congenital heart disease and hereditary spherocytosis who have not previously undergone splenectomy.

The promoter region of the TDH3 gene is known to exhibit high transcriptional activity regardless of the fermentability of the carbon source and has been widely utilized to synthesize heterologous gene products in S. cerevisiae.

We constructed a plasmid that directs the synthesis and secretion of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) particles by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This plasmid contains a proteinase-resistant HBsAg M (M-P31c) gene fused at its 5'-terminus with a chicken-lysozyme signal peptide (C-SIG) gene, which is placed under the yeast GLD (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene) promoter. The products encoded by the "C-SIG+M-P31c" (LM-P31c) gene were synthesized and assembled themselves into HBsAg particles in yeast cells, and the particles were released into the medium along with poly-HSA (polymerized human serum albumin) binding activity.
