Background: Fetal aortic valvuloplasty (FAV) is proposed to prevent hypoplastic left heart syndrome due to fetal critical aortic stenosis.
Objective: to report our experience on FAV as the first step in a complex therapeutic strategy.
Method: Series of patients with FAV over an 18-year period.

In spite of great advances in staged left ventricle recruitment strategy, some patients do not achieve biventricular circulation nor are candidates for reversal to single-ventricle palliation. We present a case of a successful reverse double switch operation in a patient with failure of left ventricle recruitment and pulmonary hypertension. This strategy provided a one-and-a-half repair with a sub-pulmonary hypoplastic left ventricle that improved the patient's clinical status, becoming a novel alternative in this particular subset of patients.

However, most studies have been limited by regional sampling, which precludes the examination of behavioral consequences associated with the pandemic at a global level. Further, few studies operationalized pandemic-related stressors to enable the investigation of the impact of different types of stressors on health outcomes.

With gene replacement therapies (GRTs) increasingly and rapidly reaching the healthcare marketplace, the vast potential for improving patient health is matched by the potential budgetary impact for healthcare payers. GRTs are highly valuable given their potential life-extending or even curative benefits and may provide significant cost-offsets compared with standard of care. Current healthcare systems are, however, struggling to fund such valuable but costly therapies.

In the present work, we investigated the behavior of Calbindin D, a modulator protein with a high affinity for Ca but structurally insensitive to its presence. Its non-canoncal N-terminal EF-hand was replaced by chimeric motifs, containing increasing structural elements from the sensor troponin C SCIII motif.

National representative samples were collected from 24 countries (N = 25,435). The main predictors were (1) perceived risk to contract coronavirus, (2) perceived risk to suffer economic losses due to coronavirus, and (3) their interaction effect.

In particular, the fornix has been implicated as especially vulnerable given that it represents the primary outflow tract of the hippocampus. Despite this, little work has focused on the fornix using a potential early marker of white matter degeneration-myelin water fraction (MWF; an in vivo marker of myelin content).

Definition of CXY stereochemistry is important to elucidate precise binding modes. We previously reported the ()- and ()-β,γ-CHX-dGTP diastereomers (X = F, Cl), prepared via P,C-dimorpholinamide CHCl (, ) and CHF (, ) bisphosphonates (BPs) equipped with an ()-mandelic acid as a chiral auxiliary, with final deprotection using H/Pd.

Therefore, we investigated patterns of regional CBF in 162 Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative participants characterized as cognitively unimpaired (CU; = 80), objectively-defined subtle cognitive decline (Obj-SCD; = 31), or mild cognitive impairment (MCI; = 51). Arterial spin labeling MRI quantified regional CBF in a priori regions of interest: hippocampus, inferior temporal gyrus, inferior parietal lobe, medial orbitofrontal cortex, and rostral middle frontal gyrus.

Although the neural basis of this association remains unclear, evidence suggests it might reflect early neurodegenerative processes. However, to date, associations between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of neurodegeneration, such as CSF tau, and APOE-related alterations in ACC cortical thickness (CTH) and CBF have yet to be explored.

In this study, we describe a mutagenesis method based on synthesizing a gene using a complete set of forward and reverse spiked oligonucleotides that have been modified to introduce a low ratio of mutant nucleotides at each position. This novel mutagenesis scheme named "Spiked Genes" yields a library of clones with an enhanced mutation distribution due to its unbiased nucleotide incorporation.

Cry-toxins have a complex mechanism involving interaction with several proteins in the insect gut such as aminopeptidase N (APN), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and cadherin (CAD). It was shown that the loop regions of domain II of Cry toxins participate in receptor binding.

Among the different models for assessing protein production and structure-function studies, green fluorescent protein (GFP) is one of the preferred models because of its importance as a reporter in cellular and molecular studies. In this research we analyze the effect of codon deletions near the amino terminus of different GFP proteins on fluorescence.

The objectives of this study were to investigate whether there is a relationship between occupational exposure to pesticides and semen quality, and to determine whether chronic exposure to pesticides differentially affects semen quality in men of different ages. A comparative study of 64 farmers and 64 control men was performed.

Herein, we disclose a combinatorial approach relying on two Ugi reactions for the generation of peptidomimetics inspired by natural metallo-aminopeptidase inhibitors. The library was screened for inhibitory activity against the neutral metallo-aminopeptidase of Escherichia coli (ePepN) and the porcine kidney cortex metallo-aminopeptidase (pAPN), which was used as a model of the M1-aminopeptidases of mammals.

To investigate whether leaf gas-exchange rates and sensitivity to drought acclimate to precipitation regimes, we measured the seasonal variations of leaf gas exchange in a mature piñon-juniper Pinus edulis-Juniperus monosperma woodland after 3 years of precipitation manipulation. We compared trees receiving ambient precipitation with those in an irrigated treatment (+30% of ambient precipitation) and a partial rainfall exclusion (-45%).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between occupational exposure to organophosphate (OP) and carbamate (CB) pesticides and semen quality, as well as levels of reproductive and thyroid hormones of Venezuelan farm workers.
Methods: Thirty-five healthy men (unexposed group) and 64 male agricultural workers (exposed group) were recruited for clinical evaluation of fertility status.
The T-protein is a single-polypeptide bi-functional enzyme composed of a chorismate mutase domain fused to a prephenate dehydrogenase domain (TyrA). We replaced the chorismate mutase domain with canonical or pseudo-Ca(2+)-binding motifs (EF-hand). Canonical-EF-hand-motifs differentiate from pseudo-EF-hand-motifs by experimenting a Ca(2+)-dependent conformational change.
