Therapy-related acute myelogenous leukemia (t-AML) is a generally fatal disease with a very poor response to conventional chemotherapy. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) has been reported in patients with chemotherapy- responsive t-AML. However its use is limited owing to complications from previous treatments.

The combination of methotrexate and cyclosporine A (MTX-CSA) is the standard regimen for the prevention of graft vs. host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) from HLA-identical siblings. Mycophenolate mofetil and CSA (MMF-CSA) combination has been successfully used for GVHD prophylaxis after non-reduced intensity conditioning (non-RIC) allo-SCT with peripheral blood or non-G-CSF stimulated bone marrow as stem cell source.

Peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) harvests mobilized by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) contain more CD34+ cells and provide more rapid engraftment than do bone marrow (BM) harvests. However, some reports have suggested a higher risk of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), possibly because such PBPC harvests contain approximately 10 times more T lymphocytes than do BM harvests. Some groups are attempting to combine the faster engraftment of PBPCs with the lower incidence of GVHD observed after BM transplantation by using G-CSF-primed BM conventionally harvested from iliac crests for allogenic BM transplantation.

Unlabelled: The cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells can be used for rescuing the hematopoiesis after high dose chemotherapy.

Purpose: The ice crystal formation during the freezing procedure is the key point that can be harmful to the cells. The cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells in a controlled-rate freezer could decrease the cell damage.

A 400mg dose twice-a-day oral acyclovir prophylaxis regimen was evaluated in 50 allogeneic transplant recipients. Twenty (40%) patients experienced 24 episodes of herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding; l7 (70.8%) occurring during prophylaxis.

Nocardiosis has rarely been described after BMT. When the doses of immunosuppressive therapy were tapered, a 46-year-old BMT recipient developed chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and immunosuppresive drugs were increased. Sixteen days later the patient developed nocardiosis diagnosed by lung biopsy.

In France, more than 80% of children with Burkitt's lymphoma or Burkitt's leukemia (ALL3) are now cured with the LMB (B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and B-ALL) protocols of the Société Française d'Oncologie Pédiatrique, but so far, poor results have been obtained in the few adult studies available. We have analyzed the experience with LMB protocols in adult patients. This retrospective study involved 65 adult patients with small noncleaved cell lymphoma or ALL3 treated with the LMB protocols.

The present report concerns a retrospective study of 16 patients with localized intermediate- or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the testis treated in one institution from 1973 to 1990. Ann Arbor stage of disease was IE in 11 and IIE in 5 cases. All except one patient underwent initial inguinal orchidectomy, 11 were disease free after surgery and 12 received inverted Y radiation therapy.
