Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children and adolescents and in recent decades, the survival rates have risen to >90% in children largely due the introduction of risk adapted therapy. Therefore, knowledge of factors influencing risk of relapse is important. The transcription factor IKAROS is a regulator of lymphocyte development and alterations of its coding gene, , are frequent in ALL and are associated with higher relapse risk.

Whole-blood culture-derived cytokine combinations for the diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Introduction: The diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) disease and TB infection (TBI) remains a challenge, and there is a need for non-invasive and blood-based methods to differentiate TB from conditions mimicking TB (CMTB), TBI, and healthy controls (HC). We aimed to determine whether combination of cytokines and established biomarkers could discriminate between 1) TB and CMTB 2) TB and TBI 3) TBI and HC.

Methods: We used hemoglobin, total white blood cell count, neutrophils, monocytes, C-reactive protein, and ten Meso Scale Discovery analyzed cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, interferon (IFN)-ɣ, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α) in TruCulture whole blood tubes stimulated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS), zymosan (ZYM), anti-CD3/28 (CD3), and unstimulated (Null) to develop three index tests able to differentiate TB from CMTB and TBI, and TBI from HC.

Objectives: This study explored changes in pain-related parameters, occupational function, occupational balance, lifestyle factors, and self-perceived health status in adults with chronic high-impact pain participating in an occupational therapy lifestyle intervention.

Methods: This one-group longitudinal feasibility study was performed in three continuous feasibility rounds. The occupational therapists-led intervention targeted meaningful occupations, regular physical activity, and a healthy diet.

The effect of orally administered nitrate on renal function and blood pressure in a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study in healthy subjects.

Background: Several studies have shown inorganic nitrate/nitrite to reduce blood pressure in both healthy subjects and hypertensive patients. An effect presumably caused through bioconversion to nitric oxide. However, studies on inorganic nitrate/nitrite have shown inconsistent results on renal functions such as GFR and sodium excretion.

Introduction: Invasive bone biopsy to assess bone metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder may be replaced by the noninvasive 18F-NaF PET/CT and biomarkers of bone metabolism. We aimed to compare parameters of bone turnover, mineralization, and volume assessed by bone biopsies with results derived from 18F-NaF PET/CT and biomarkers (bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, fibroblast growth factor 23, and osteoprotegerin).

Methods: A cross-sectional study included 17 dialysis patients, and results from 18F-NaF PET/CT scans and the biomarkers were directly compared with the results of histomorphometric analyses of tetracycline double-labeled trans-iliac bone biopsies.

Socioeconomic position and maintenance therapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A national cohort study.

Background: Socioeconomic differences in survival among children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have been reported in high-income countries and there is an unmet need for strategies to identify vulnerable patient subgroups. Reported differences in survival for children from families with different socioeconomic positions seem to arise when starting maintenance therapy. This could reflect reduced physician's compliance or family adherence to maintenance therapy.

Different perceptions of thorax anatomy and hand placement for chest compressions among healthcare professionals and laypersons: Implications for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Aim: The European Resuscitation Council guidelines recommend that the hand position for chest compressions is obtained by "placing the heel of your hand in the centre of the chest". Importantly, guidelines are based on a study on healthcare professionals being extrapolated to laypersons. This study explored whether healthcare professionals and laypersons differ in anatomical knowledge necessary for obtaining the correct hand position for chest compressions and understanding of European Resuscitation Council guideline recommendations in the absence of a demonstration.

Background: Accurate, precise and straightforward methods for measuring glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and/or renal plasma flow (RPF) are still in demand today. The time-consuming constant infusion technique (CIT) is the gold standard and preferred for research, whereas the simple, but less precise, single injection technique (SIT) is used in clinical settings. This study investigated the use of Tc-DTPA and Tc-MAG by CIT as a measure of renal function.

Cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis level as a diagnostic predictor? A cross-sectional study.

Background: Lumbar puncture with quantification of leukocytes and differential count of cellular subsets in the cerebrospinal fluid is a standard procedure in cases of suspected neuroinfectious conditions. However, a number of non-infectious causes may result in a low leukocyte number (0-1000 cells/ml). We wanted to assess the diagnostic diversity of unselected adult patients with pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid.

The influence of subluxation on the severity of symptoms, disability, and the results of operative treatment in TMC osteoarthritis with total joint arthroplasty.

Background: The role of subluxation in staging of the severity of osteoarthritic changes remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of subluxation of symptomatic osteoarthritic trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint regarding severity of symptoms, disability, and results of operative treatment in TMC osteoarthritis with total joint arthroplasty.

Methods: We included 172 hands in 137 patients (32 males and 105 females), mean age 59 years (44-74 years), with a combination of radiological signs of TMC osteoarthritis and clinical symptoms in the study.

Objectives: To examine the preferences of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and health professionals (HPs) for the route and frequency of administration of biologic drugs.

Methods: One hundred and seven RA patients treated with biological agents for intravenous or subcutaneous use, 35 biologic-naïve RA patients treated with a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug and 30 rheumatology HPs (physicians and nurses) were recruited from two outpatient clinics in Copenhagen, Denmark. All subjects filled out a questionnaire interrogating their choice of preferred route and frequency of administration of a biologic corresponding to current available options, given that effects, adverse effects, and financial costs were identical for the different choices.

The balance between actions of procoagulant and anticoagulant factors protects organisms from bleeding and thrombosis. Thus, antithrombin deficiency increases the risk of thrombosis, and complete quantitative deficiency results in intrauterine lethality. However, patients homozygous for L99F or R47C antithrombin mutations are viable.

Background: Several novel immunoglobulin-like transcripts (NILTs) which have previously been identified in the salmonid species rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) contain either one or two extracellular Ig domains of the V-type. NILTs also possess either an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activating motif (ITAM) or immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs (ITIMs) in the cytoplasmic region resulting in different signalling abilities. Here we report for the first time the genomic organisation and structure of the multigene family of NILTs in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) using a BAC sequencing approach.

The recognition of pathogens by the innate immune system relies on a wide range of inhibitory and activating receptors. Some of these non-rearranging receptors belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) and in teleost fish the novel immune-type receptor (NITR) and the novel immunoglobulin-like transcript (NILT) have been reported. Here we describe the identification and characterisation of three new NILTs from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), with one NILT alternatively spliced into a long isoform containing two Ig domains and a short isoform containing one Ig domain.
