Background And Objectives: To report a 2022 survey of US medical school neurology clerkship directors (CDs) and to compare the results with those of similar surveys conducted in 2005, 2012, and 2017.

Methods: An American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Consortium of Neurology Clerkship Directors (CNCD) workgroup developed the survey sent to all neurology CDs listed in the AAN CNCD database. Comparisons were made with 2005, 2012, and 2017 surveys.

Service lines are increasingly common for organizing multidisciplinary patient care. Concerns regarding impacts of neuroscience service lines were voiced at several national neurology department chair summits, prompting the American Academy of Neurology to convene a Service Lines Workgroup. Neurology department leaders nationally at institutions that had created or considered a neuroscience service line were interviewed to elicit their experiences and lessons learned.

Methods: In 2019, participants self-identifying as researchers, preregistered for the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting, ≥7 years out of residency, and authors of ≥1 AAN meeting abstract submission (2006-2009) were selected to participate in the qualitative study (purposeful sampling strategy). To increase diversity, 15 participants were invited by members involved in the AAN until interviews were complete.

Objective: We sought to explore current perspectives and attitudes of general neurologists and movement disorder specialists toward deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson disease (PD), focusing on perspectives on its earlier use in the clinical course of the disease.

Methods: We designed a 30-question online survey comprised of Likert-type, multiple choice, and rank-order questions, which was distributed to 932 neurologist members of the American Academy of Neurology. We analyzed clinicians' sociodemographic information, treatment patterns used for patients with PD, reasons for and against patient referral for DBS, and general attitudes toward DBS.

Despite increased neuroscience interest at the undergraduate level, a significant shortage of neurologists in the United States exists. To better understand how to generate more interest in neurology, specifically at the undergraduate level, we conducted an anonymous cross-sectional online survey comprising 1,085 undergraduates in either neuroscience courses or majoring/minoring in neuroscience from across the United States to better understand their clinical neurology experiences and perspectives. The survey quantitatively and qualitatively assessed students' clinical neurology exposure inside and outside of the classroom, research experiences, and career goals.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and a disintegrin and metalloproteinases (ADAMs) belong to the metzincin family of zinc-containing multidomain molecules, and can act as soluble or membrane-bound proteases. These enzymes inactivate or activate other soluble or membrane-expressed mediator molecules, which enables them to control developmental processes, tissue remodelling, inflammatory responses and proliferative signalling pathways. The dysregulation of MMPs and ADAMs has long been recognized in acute kidney injury and in chronic kidney disease, and genetic targeting of selected MMPs and ADAMs in different mouse models of kidney disease showed that they can have detrimental and protective roles.

Human toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8) activation induces a potent T helper-1 (Th1) cell response critical for defense against intracellular pathogens, including protozoa. The receptor harbors two distinct binding sites, uridine and di- and/or trinucleotides, but the RNases upstream of TLR8 remain poorly characterized. We identified two endolysosomal endoribonucleases, RNase T2 and RNase 2, that act synergistically to release uridine from oligoribonucleotides.

Acute kidney injury is a common complication of advanced liver disease and increased mortality of these patients. Here, we analyzed the role of Y-box protein-1 (YB-1), a nucleic acid binding protein, in the bile duct ligation model of liver fibrosis and monitored liver and subsequent kidney damage. Following bile duct ligation, both serum levels of liver enzymes and expression of hepatic extracellular matrix components such as type I collagen were significantly reduced in mice with half-maximal YB-1 expression (Yb1) as compared to their wild-type littermates.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease and lupus nephritis is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Notch-3 signaling induced by membrane-bound or soluble ligands such as YB-1 constitutes an evolutionarily conserved pathway that determines major decisions in cell fate. Mass spectrometry of extracellular YB-1 in sera from patients with SLE and lupus-prone mice revealed specific post-translational guanidinylation of two lysine residues within the highly conserved cold-shock domain of YB-1 (YB-1-G).
