A new STI in the city: MPOX in Barcelona. First outbreak (5/2022-5/2023) and subsequent resurgence.

Background: In May 2022, after the suspension of the mobility restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first outbreak of MPOX virus, transmitted from human to human, was detected outside of Africa, affecting mostly sexually active men who have sex with men. Our aim is to report the first outbreak of MPOX in Barcelona city in the period from 5/2022 to 5/2023 and the subsequent surge of cases in 8/2023.

Methods: We performed a descriptive study of all notified cases in city residents, obtained through epidemiological surveys.

Objective: To describe the use of the TISA (Transcutaneous Implant Skin Anomalies) scale by members of the Colombian Association of Otology (ACON) in the evaluation of patients using bone conduction implants.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was conducted among the members of the Colombian Association of Otology. A voluntary survey was performed, where participants evaluated images of patients with transcutaneous bone conduction implants exhibiting different skin conditions.

Genome-wide association study of cassava brown streak disease resistance in cassava germplasm conserved in South America.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a vital carbohydrate source for over 800 million people globally, yet its production in East Africa is severely affected by cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). Genebanks, through ex-situ conservation, play a pivotal role in preserving crop diversity, providing crucial resources for breeding resilient and disease-resistant crops. This study genotyped 234 South American cassava accessions conserved at the CIAT genebank, previously phenotyped for CBSD resistance by an independent group, to perform a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) to identify genetic variants associated with CBSD resistance.

Purpose Of Review: This article discusses commonly encountered medical and neurological complications in patients with brain tumors and highlights recommendations for their management based on updated evidence.

Recent Findings: Use of dexamethasone is correlated with worse prognosis in patients with glioblastoma, and in brain metastases, high doses may lead to increased side effects without additional clinical benefit. There are multiple antiseizure medications (ASM) to choose from and possible interactions and toxicity must be considered when choosing an agent.

Genomic selection for tolerance to aluminum toxicity in a synthetic population of upland rice.

Over half of the world's arable land is acidic, which constrains cereal production. In South America, different rice-growing regions (Cerrado in Brazil and Llanos in Colombia and Venezuela) are particularly affected due to high aluminum toxicity levels. For this reason, efforts have been made to breed for tolerance to aluminum toxicity using synthetic populations.

Sampling strategies for genotyping common bean ( L.) Genebank accessions with DArTseq: a comparison of single plants, multiple plants, and DNA pools.

Introduction: Genotyping large-scale gene bank collections requires an appropriate sampling strategy to represent the diversity within and between accessions.

Methods: A panel of 44 common bean ( L.) landraces from the Alliance Bioversity and The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) gene bank was genotyped with DArTseq using three sampling strategies: a single plant per accession, 25 individual plants per accession jointly analyzed after genotyping (), and by pooling tissue from 25 individual plants per accession ().

Yet, detecting factors that reduce the use of cars is a serious challenge, particularly across different regions. Here, we model the use of various modes of transport in a city by aggregating Active mobility (A), Public Transport (B) and Cars (C), expressing the modal share of a city by its ABC triplet.

Functional neuroimaging in patients with catatonia: A systematic review.

Background: Catatonia is a challenging and heterogeneous neuropsychiatric syndrome of motor, affective and behavioral dysregulation which has been associated with multiple disorders such as structural brain lesions, systemic diseases, and psychiatric disorders. This systematic review summarized and compared functional neuroimaging abnormalities in catatonia associated with psychiatric and medical conditions.

Methods: Using PRISMA methods, we completed a systematic review of 6 databases from inception to February 7th, 2024 of patients with catatonia that had functional neuroimaging performed.

Management of CRSwNP in Latin America: A multidisciplinary consensus from an expert working group.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is an inflammatory condition of the nasal and paranasal tissues, characterized by the presence of bilateral nasal polyps. While etiology and pathogenetic mechanisms are heterogeneous and complex, in most patients, disease is mediated predominantly through type 2 inflammatory processes. Clinical management is challenging, and a multidisciplinary approach is preferred.

Crop diversity conserved in genebanks facilitates the development of superior varieties, improving yields, nutrition, adaptation to climate change and resilience against pests and diseases. Cassava () plays a vital role in providing carbohydrates to approximately 500 million people in Africa and other continents. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) conserves the largest global cassava collection, housing 5,963 accessions of cultivated cassava and wild relatives within its genebank.

Extracellular vesicles derived from liver sinusoidal endothelial cells inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells and Kupffer cells in vitro.

Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) play a crucial role in maintaining liver microcirculation and exchange of nutrients in the liver and are thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and Kupffer cells (KCs) has been considered to be responsible for the onset of liver fibrosis and the aggravation of liver injury. However, the paracrine regulatory effects of LSECs in the development of MASLD, in particular the role of LSEC-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) remains unclear.

A Comparative Study of HA/DBM Compounds Derived from Bovine and Porcine for Bone Regeneration.

This comparative study investigated the tissue regeneration and inflammatory response induced by xenografts comprised of hydroxyapatite (HA) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) extracted from porcine (P) and bovine (B) sources. First, extraction of HA and DBM was independently conducted, followed by chemical and morphological characterization. Second, mixtures of HA/DBM were prepared in 50/50 and 60/40 concentrations, and the chemical, morphological, and mechanical properties were evaluated.

The relation between authoritarian leadership and belief in fake news.

Individual factors such as cognitive capacities matter when one is requested to spot fake news. We suggest, however, that social influence-specifically as exercised by an authoritarian leader-might matter more if one is expected to agree with the fake news. We developed a single-item prototype measure of leadership styles and recruited participants from four Western democratic countries (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, N = 501) who identified their immediate boss as an autonomous, paternalistic, or authoritarian leader.

Assessing the Value of a Pre-operative CT Sinus Anatomy Review Tool.

Avoidance of adverse events requires careful review of pre-operative computed tomography (CT) images to recognize potential areas of safety concern. Using a preoperative checklist may aid surgeons in identifying these features.

Spectral features of resting-state EEG in Parkinson's Disease: A multicenter study using functional data analysis.

Objective: This study aims 1) To analyse differences in resting-state electroencephalogram (rs-EEG) spectral features of Parkinson's Disease (PD) and healthy subjects (non-PD) using Functional Data Analysis (FDA) and 2) To explore, in four independent cohorts, the external validity and reproducibility of the findings using both epoch-to-epoch FDA and averaged-epochs approach.

Methods: We included 169 subjects (85 non-PD; 84 PD) from four centres. Rs-EEG signals were preprocessed with a combination of automated pipelines.

Unraveling Polyphyly in Flourensia (Asteraceae, Heliantheae, Enceliinae) and the Establishment of a New Genus Austroflourensia.

The monophyly of Flourensia was examined for the first time by sequencing the nuclear ITS and plastid psbA- trnH regions in 18 species of the genus, analyzing them along with representatives of the remaining genera of subtribe Enceliinae. Results showed strong evidence for the polyphyly of Flourensia identifying two well-supported groups: Flourensia, a clade from North America including the type F. laurifolia, and another clade, here designed as the new genus Austroflourensia, containing the South American species.

The literature reports large variability in cochlear implant (CI) device survival and rates of explantation and reimplantation. This retrospective chart review summarizes CI survival and rates of explantation and reimplantation in pediatric CI recipients at a Canadian tertiary pediatric hospital over 32 years.

The Northwestern Esophageal Quality of Life (NEQOL) can be used among esophageal diseases while maintaining sensitivity to specific conditions.

Monitoring COVID-19 in Colombia during the first year of the pandemic.

Background: COVID-19 cases in Medellín, the second largest city in Colombia, were monitored during the first year of the pandemic using both mathematical models based on transmission theory and surveillance from each observed epidemic phase.

Design And Methods: Expected cases were estimated using mandatory reporting data from Colombia's national epidemiological surveillance system from March 7, 2020 to March 7, 2021. Initially, the range of daily expected cases was estimated using a Borel-Tanner stochastic model and a deterministic Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) model.

Structural neuroimaging and predominant polarity in patients with type 1 bipolar disorder from Antioquia.

Introduction: Predominant polarity (PP) has been proposed as a specifier of bipolar disorder (BD) due to its relationship with clinical and prognostic variables.
