We describe the case of a 36-year-old male patient with a history of chronic headache who came to the emergency room due to an intense global headache, associated with a tonic-clonic episode and loss of consciousness. A cranial computed tomography revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage without apparent aneurysms and a left temporal hyperdense lesion suggestive of intraparenchymal hematoma on the follow-up computed tomography. Cerebral angiography showed irregularities in the right internal carotid artery, including a pseudoaneurysm and multiple stenoses in pial arteries, which were related to chronic cocaine use.

is a known cause of pyogenic liver abscess and has an increased prevalence in Southeast Asia. We present two cases of individuals with remote travel history to southeast Asia presenting with fevers, chills, and abdominal pain secondary to pyogenic liver abscess. Neither individual had a comorbid medical condition or history of prior hepato-biliary pathology that would predispose them to bacterial translocation and abscess formation.

In the phytoremediation processes of mine tailings with Ricinus communis inoculated with PGPB, it was found that the Serratia K120 bacterium favors the translocation of Al, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Mn to the aerial part of the plant, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) concerning for the control. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) was > 1 in Al with all the bacteria, Pb, Serratia K120, Fe, Pantoea 113, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn in Serratia MC119 and Serratia K120, Fe and As in Serratia K120 and Pantoea 134, indicating that Ricinus communis inoculated with PGPB functions as a hyper accumulating plant.

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a photon-pair source with correlations in the frequency and polarization degrees of freedom. We base our source on the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process in a photonic crystal fiber. We show theoretically that the two-photon state is the coherent superposition of up to six distinct SFWM processes, each corresponding to a distinct combination of polarizations for the four waves involved and giving rise to an energy-conserving pair of peaks.

As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections continue, there is a substantial need for cost-effective and large-scale testing that utilizes specimens that can be readily collected from both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various community settings. Although multiple diagnostic methods utilize nasopharyngeal specimens, saliva specimens represent an attractive alternative as they can rapidly and safely be collected from different populations. While saliva has been described as an acceptable clinical matrix for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, evaluations of analytic performance across platforms for this specimen type are limited.
