A comparative study was conducted to evaluate haemagglutination potential in the haemolymph of two species of giant African land snails (Archachatina marginata and Achatina achatina). Three liveweight groups of snails (<100 g, 101-150 g and >150 g) were used with 4 replicates per liveweight per species for haemagglutination assay (HA). The effect of aestivation on haemagglutination potential was also evaluated.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA postero-lateral hernia through the foramen of Bochdalek is a rare type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia CDH. The incidence of Bochdalek hernia on the right side is 10-20% compared to the left side, and herniation of the stomach into the right pleural cavity is extremely rare. We report a case of right-sided Bochdalek hernia with a right intrathoracic stomach and organo-axial torsion misdiagnosed initially, and treated as a case of hyperactive airway disease.

Design: A retrospective review of clinical data of consecutive patients with a history of aspiration of FB treated during the time of study.
Setting: The Cardiothoracic Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, directly serves a population of about 40 to 60 million in the South Western Nigeria and the community clinics.
Background: This prospective study was undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of intercostal nerve block (ICNB) with 0.5% bupivacaine (Marcaine) for pain relief in patients with rib fractures and to correlate the degree of pain relief with changes in the peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and oxygen saturation (Sao2).
Methods: Twenty-one consecutive adult patients admitted with rib fractures associated with severe pain formed the basis of the study.
When a pre-existing lung cavity is colonized by Aspergilius fumigatus, it forms a fungal ball (pulmonary aspergilloma) and the presenting symptom is usually haemoptysis that may be massive and often-times life threatening. The radiological finding is that of a ball-like structure within a lung cavitation and the typical air crescent around the ball both on plain radiography and CT scan of the chest. The present case is of a 50-year-old male who had a 25-year history of heavy smoking (40 cigarettes per day) and haemoptysis.

Innumerable carcinoid tumourlets may develop within pulmonary lobes should there be scarring from intralobar sequestration; these tumourlets may, in turn, be the cause of chronic lung disease. This report documents the incidental detection of multifocal carcinoid tumourlets in the lung of a 65-year-old man who had repeated episodes of lung infection, progressive dyspnea and haemoptysis; he lived at high altitude. The left lower lobe of the lung was resected surgically, during which procedure an aberrant systemic arterial supply was noticed.
