Background: Incorporating patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is crucial for ensuring the relevance and success of studies, yet it remains significantly underutilised in surgical research.
Main Body: This commentary presents insights from our neurosurgical research team's experience with establishing and working with a PPI group called "Science for Tomorrow's Neurosurgery" on research regarding novel intra-operative optical imaging techniques. Through collaboration with patient-focused charities, we have successfully incorporated patient perspectives into our work at each stage of the research pipeline, whilst adhering to core PPI principles, such as reciprocal relationships, co-learning, partnerships, and transparency.

Physical phantom models have been integral to surgical training, yet they lack realism and are unable to replicate the presence of blood resulting from surgical actions. Existing domain transfer methods aim to enhance realism, but none facilitate blood simulation. Previous iterations of intra-operative HSI systems have shown limitations, either due to carrying a large footprint limiting ease of use within the confines of a neurosurgical theater environment, having a slow image acquisition time, or by compromising spatial/spectral resolution in favor of improvements to the surgical workflow. Lightfield hyperspectral imaging is a novel technique that has the potential to facilitate video rate image acquisition whilst maintaining a high spectral resolution.

Purpose: Hyperspectral imaging shows promise for surgical applications to non-invasively provide spatially resolved, spectral information. For calibration purposes, a white reference image of a highly reflective Lambertian surface should be obtained under the same imaging conditions. Standard white references are not sterilizable and so are unsuitable for surgical environments.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Subdural spinous abscess is a rare pathology that carries significant morbidity if not diagnosed and treated early; of the cases reported in the literature, very few are genuinely spontaneous in nature.
Case Presentation: Here we demonstrate the case of an otherwise entirely fit and well 56-year-old White, British female presenting with low back pain, bilateral sciatica and sensate urinary retention; lumbar subdural spinous abscess was diagnosed on urgent magnetic resonance imaging and the patient was successfully managed with surgical evacuation and prolonged antibiotic therapy. The patient made a full neurological recovery and was followed-up in the outpatient setting 12 weeks following her initial surgery; she was pain free with normal inflammatory markers and a normal neurological examination.

Purpose: Hyperspectral imaging has the potential to improve intraoperative decision making if tissue characterisation is performed in real-time and with high-resolution. Hyperspectral snapshot mosaic sensors offer a promising approach due to their fast acquisition speed and compact size. However, a demosaicking algorithm is required to fully recover the spatial and spectral information of the snapshot images.

We present a case of a 29-year-old woman who presented to a volunteer-run primary care facility in Southern Belize. Her initial presentation was vaginal itching and white discharge; she also requested insertion of a sub-dermal contraceptive implant. During the insertion, marks suspicious for deliberate self-harm were noticed on the patient's arm, and on further exploration she revealed she was being physically and emotionally abused by her husband.

A prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the trend of renal function in hospitalized ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke patients. The incidence of renal impairment in these subgroups, the contributing factors and the need for renal replacement in renal impaired patients was evaluated.
