Stressful experiences form stronger memories due to enhanced neural plasticity mechanisms linked to glucocorticoid hormones (cortisol in humans, corticosterone in rats). Among other neural structures, the dorsal striatum plays a role in the corticosterone-induced consolidation of stressful memories, particularly in the cued water maze task. Neural plasticity is related to mitochondrial activity due to the relevance of energy production and signaling mechanisms for functional and morphological neuronal adaptations.

Background: Microsurgical and endoscopic approaches are accepted alternatives for the management of symptomatic arachnoid cyst. However, given their ability to visualize critical neurovascular structures with less morbidity, less dissection needs, and high success rates, endoscopic approaches are excellent options for the management of this pathology.

Agency Contracts under Maximum-Entropy.

This article proposes the application of the maximum-entropy principle (MEP) to agency contracting (where a hires an to make decisions on their behalf) in situations where the principal and agent only have partial knowledge on the probability distribution of the output conditioned on the agent's actions. The paper characterizes the second-best agency contract from a maximum entropy distribution (MED) obtained from applying the MEP to the agency situation consistently with the information available. We show that, with the minimum shared information about the output distribution for the agency relationship to take place, the second-best compensation contract is (a monotone transformation of) an increasing affine function of output.

Hypersensitivity reactions to paclitaxel: The Mexican experience of rapid desensitization.

Background: Taxanes adjuvant therapy is recommended in certain high risk or metastatic tumors, particularly in lung and breast cancer, but also in other types of cancer like ovarian. The incidence of severe adverse drug reactions to paclitaxel is of approximately 10%.

Objectives: Analyze type I hypersensitivity reactions to paclitaxel and their management in the Mexican population.

The Effect of Halloysite Nanotubes on the Fire Retardancy Properties of Partially Biobased Polyamide 610.

The main objective of the work reported here was the analysis and evaluation of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as natural flame retardancy filler in partially biobased polyamide 610 (PA610), with 63% of carbon from natural sources. HNTs are naturally occurring clays with a nanotube-like shape. PA610 compounds containing 10%, 20%, and 30% HNT were obtained in a twin-screw co-rotating extruder.

In this article, we present a meta-analysis and a scientific mapping about the relationship between different types of well-being and job performance. We followed The PRISMA statement for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses (Moher et al., 2009), and conduct the search in Web of Science, SCOPUS, Ebscohost, Proquest, and Jstor databases.

ADIPOQ single nucleotide polymorphisms and breast cancer in northeastern Mexican women.

Background: Adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) polymorphisms have been shown to affect adiponectin serum concentration and some have been associated with breast cancer (BC) risk. The aims of this study were to describe the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ADIPOQ in Mexican women with BC and to determine if they show an association with it.

Methods: DNA samples from 397 patients and 355 controls were tested for the ADIPOQ gene SNPs: rs2241766 (GT) and rs1501299 (GT) by TaqMan allelic discrimination assay.

Recommendations of the Colombian Consensus Committee for the Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Prehospital, Emergency Department, Surgery, and Intensive Care (Beyond One Option for Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Stratified Protocol [BOOTStraP]).

 Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem. In Colombia, it is estimated that 70% of deaths from violence and 90% of deaths from road traffic accidents are TBI related. In the year 2014, the Ministry of Health of Colombia funded the development of a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for the diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with severe TBI.

Free-energy model for nanoparticle self-assembly by liquid crystal sorting.

We modeled the experimentally observed self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) into shells with diameters up to 10 μm, via segregation from growing nematic domains. Using field-based Monte Carlo simulations, we found the equilibrium configurations of the system by minimizing a free-energy functional that includes effects of excluded-volume interactions among NPs, orientational elasticity, and the isotropic-nematic phase-transition energy. We developed a Gaussian-profile approximation for the liquid crystal (LC) order-parameter field that provides accurate analytical values for the free energy of LC droplets and the associated microshells.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) was detected in Spain in 2010. The presence of CCHFV in Hyalomma marginatum ticks from migratory birds passing through Morocco during the spring migration strengthened the hypothesis of the arrival of infected ticks transported by birds to the Iberian Peninsula. Furthermore, Hyalomma species are vectors of bacterial infections such as spotted fever rickettsioses.

All-optical PT-symmetric conversion of amplitude (phase) modulation to phase (amplitude) modulation.

We study electromagnetic field propagation through a planar three-waveguide coupler with linear gain or loss in a configuration that is the optical analog of a quantum PT-symmetric system. This model is experimentally feasible on at least four proven architectures: lossy waveguide couplers, pumped waveguides couplers, non-Hermitian electronics and coupled pumped whispering gallery mode resonators. We show that our device provides all-optical amplitude (phase) to phase (amplitude) conversion in the PT-symmetric regime at given propagation lenghts.

The execution variability and outcomes found in throwing actions have received special attention in numerous studies in recent years. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of an unstable condition on velocity, accuracy and kinematics of movement in the seven metres throw in handball. Twenty-five young handball players took part in an experiment, throwing towards a target on a stable and an unstable surface.

Game performance versus competitive performance in the world championship of handball 2011.

This article assesses the game performance of the teams participating in the Men's World Championship of Handball of 2011 by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the cross-efficiency evaluation. DEA uses Linear Programming to yield a measure of the overall performance of the game of particular teams, and allows us to identify relative strengths and weaknesses by means of benchmarking analysis. The cross-efficiency evaluation provides a peer-appraisal of the teams with different patterns of game, and makes it possible to rank them.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in ticks from migratory birds, Morocco.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus was detected in ticks removed from migratory birds in Morocco. This finding demonstrates the circulation of this virus in northwestern Africa and supports the hypothesis that the virus can be introduced into Europe by infected ticks transported from Africa by migratory birds.

Although computers and information technology (IT) have penetrated the field of social work, little research has systematically studied how users respond to this infusion. Information systems researchers have accumulated significant insights into IT acceptance in business organizations after decades of efforts. In this study, users in the social services were assessed for their acceptance of IT.

Acute and subacute toxicity of Salvia scutellarioides in mice and rats.

The acute and subacute toxicity of the aqueous extract of Salvia scutellarioides (Lamiaceae) was studied in mice and rats. In the acute toxicity test, oral administration of 2g/kg of Salvia scutellarioides produced neither mortality nor changes in behavior or any other physiological activities. In subacute toxicity studies, no mortality was observed when the two doses of 1 or 2g/kgday of aqueous extract of Salvia scutellarioides extract were administered orally for a period of 28 days.

MLH1 and MSH2 mutations in Colombian families with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome)--description of four novel mutations.

This study searched for mutations in the MLH1 and MSH2 genes in 23 unrelated Colombian families with suspected hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). The families were grouped according to the fulfillment of the Amsterdam II criteria or the Bethesda guidelines. We screened all probands by single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) and direct DNA sequencing.

Comparison of genotyping Helicobacter pylori directly from biopsy specimens and genotyping from bacterial cultures.

PCR for vacA and cagA genotypes of Helicobacter pylori using DNA isolated from infected gastric biopsy specimens was approximately equal to genotyping using bacterial DNA from cultures. Inconsistent results were associated with low H. pylori density in biopsies.
