Individual differences in conditioned pain modulation are associated with functional connectivity within the descending antinociceptive pathway.

The perception of pain and ability to cope with it varies widely amongst people, which in part could be due to the presence of inhibitory (antinociceptive) or facilitatory (pronociceptive) effects in conditioned pain modulation (CPM). This study examined whether individual differences in CPM reflect functional connectivity (FC) strengths within nodes of the descending antinociceptive pathway (DAP). A heat-based CPM paradigm and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) were used to test the hypothesis that an individual's capacity to exhibit inhibitory CPM (changes in test stimuli [TS] pain due to a conditioning stimulus [CS]) reflects FC of the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC), periaqueductal gray (PAG), and rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM).

The risk of childhood asthma across diverse climates: growing up in Australia.

This study investigates the association between climate and childhood asthma in Australia. Data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) was used to analyse this association in children who were 6-15 years between 2004 and 2018. Asthma prevalence decreased from 16% at 6-7 years to 13% at 14-15 years.

The role of greenspace in vitamin D status: cross-sectional, observational evidence from the UK Biobank.

Background: Exposure to greenspace is associated with positive health outcomes. This relationship is poorly understood, with limited knowledge on the mechanisms through which greenspace affects health, including biomarkers of greenspace effects.

Methods: We used data from the UK Biobank to examine the cross-sectional association between greenspace exposure and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D].

Introduction: Currently there is no standardization of variable taper endodontic files and corresponding gutta-percha (GP) cones. The aim of this study was to evaluate intramanufacturer and intermanufacturer variability of diameter and taper in the apical third of GP master cones and finishing files from 3 commercially available variable taper endodontic systems.

Methods: Diameter measurements were recorded using digital microscopy at 1-mm increments (D1-D4) for F2 files and corresponding GP cones (n = 20 per system) from ProTaper Gold (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Johnson City, TN), EdgeTaper Platinum (EdgeEndo, Albuquerque, NM), and ExactTaper H (SS White, Lakewood, NJ).

In this article, we develop an analytical approach for estimating brain connectivity networks that accounts for subject heterogeneity. More specifically, we consider a novel extension of a multi-subject Bayesian vector autoregressive model that estimates group-specific directed brain connectivity networks and accounts for the effects of covariates on the network edges. We adopt a flexible approach, allowing for (possibly) nonlinear effects of the covariates on edge strength via a novel Bayesian nonparametric prior that employs a weighted mixture of Gaussian processes.

The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) among individuals younger than age 50 (early-onset CRC [EOCRC]) has substantially increased, and yet the etiology and molecular mechanisms underlying this alarming rise remain unclear. We compared tumor-associated T-cell repertoires between EOCRC and average-onset CRC (AOCRC) to uncover potentially unique immune microenvironment-related features by age of onset. Our discovery cohort included 242 patients who underwent surgical resection at Cleveland Clinic from 2000 to 2020.

Greenspace and risk of obesity-related cancer in the UK Biobank cohort: An analysis of private residential gardens and other greenspace types.

Background: Cohort studies linking greenspace exposure to a lower risk of obesity-related cancer (ORC) are scarce. Existing evidence on site-specific cancers has predominantly relied on non-specific greenspace measures, including vegetation indices. We examined the associations of total greenspace, private residential gardens, and other greenspace types with the risk of being diagnosed with overall and site-specific ORC.

Association between socioeconomic deprivation and bone health status in the UK biobank cohort participants.

Unlabelled: The effect of deprivation on total bone health status has not been well defined. We examined the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and poor bone health and falls and we found a significant association. The finding could be beneficial for current public health strategies to minimise disparities in bone health.

In this paper we look at non-pharmaceutical treatments for intractable epilepsy based on neurophysiological methods especially with EEG analysis. In summary, there are a number of limbic and thalamo-cortical related structures involved in the processing of musical emotion (exposure), including the amygdala (arousal, expression of mood, fear), hippocampus (memory, regulation of HPA axis, stress), parahippocampal gyrus (recognition, memory retrieval), insula (valence), temporal poles (connectivity), ventral striatum (expectation and experience of reward), orbitofrontal cortex (valence) and cingulate cortex (autonomic regulation). One method is to audify (a form of sonification) EEG activity to find music by feedback to entrain abnormal EEG activity.

This study aimed to examine the temporal changes in temperature-related mortality in relation to the activation of the heat-health alert and response system (HARS) in the State of Victoria, Australia. We examined the relationship between temperatures and mortality using quasi-Poisson regression and the distributed lag non-linear model (dlnm) and compared the temperature-mortality association between the two periods: period 1- prior-HARS (1992-2009) and period 2- post-HARS (2010-2019).
