We resurveyed forest plots established in 1964 along elevation transects in the Green Mountains (Vermont) to examine whether a shift had occurred in the location of the northern hardwood-boreal forest ecotone (NBE) from 1964 to 2004. We found a 19% increase in dominance of northern hardwoods from 70% in 1964 to 89% in 2004 in the lower half of the NBE.

The manner in which other pathways cross talk with Notch signaling appears to be extraordinarily complex and, not surprisingly, context-dependent. While the physiological relevance of many of these interactions remains to be established, there is little doubt that Notch signaling is integrated with numerous other pathways in ways that appear increasingly complex.

Four members of this family, DPIV, FAP, DP8 and DP9 possess a rare catalytic activity, hydrolysis of a prolyl bond two residues from the substrate N terminus. Crystal structures show that the soluble form of FAP comprises two domains, an alpha/beta-hydrolase domain and an 8-blade beta-propeller domain.

The aim of this study was to determine the cellular distribution of gastrin in intestinal-type gastric cancers, and to determine its relationship to outcomes after R0 gastrectomy.
Methods: Eighty-six consecutive patients undergoing R0 gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma were studied.
The regulation of innate immune responses to pathogens occurs through the interaction of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) with pathogen-associated molecular patterns and the activation of several signaling pathways whose contribution to the overall innate immune response to pathogens is poorly understood. We demonstrate a mechanism of control of murine macrophage responses mediated by TLR1/2 heterodimers through c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) activity. JNK controls tumor necrosis factor alpha production and TLR-mediated macrophage responses to Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, and the TLR1/TLR2-specific agonist PAM(3)CSK(4).

Mutations in the presenilin-1 (PS1) gene are causally linked to early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Studies of neurons suggest that PS1 mutations result in a gain-of-function, which perturbs calcium regulation and increases cell vulnerability to apoptosis. Normal mammary epithelia, primary tumor and metastatic tumor cells derived from the same patient and immortalized by transfection with the human papilloma virus E6 oncogene, as well as the MCF7 human mammary adenocarcinoma cell line, were studied.
