The moth Hylesia metabus Cramer is considered a public health pest due to the release of urticating hairs by adult females during periodic invasions of towns and villages, producing dermatits in humans. We reported natural parasitism levels for this moth during six life cycles in two localities in northeastern Venezuela. Pupae were collected in the field and maintained under laboratory conditions (27 masculineC, 65% RH, 12L:12D photoperiod) until eclosion.

Methods: A cost-utility analysis was undertaken alongside a randomized controlled trial of second-eye cataract surgery in secondary care ophthalmology clinics. A total of 239 women over 70 years old with one unoperated cataract were randomized to cataract surgery (expedited, approximately 4 weeks) or control (routine surgery, 12 months wait).

Purpose: To investigate the relative contribution of visual and other factors to quality of life among elderly women with bilateral cataract.
Methods: Data were analyzed from a trial of first-eye cataract surgery. Visual parameters, general health, and social variables, and disease-specific (VF-14 Index of Visual Function), generic (Euroqol: EQ-5D, London Handicap Scale, Barthel), and intermediate (anxiety, depression, and activity) outcomes were measured at baseline and 6 months later, when approximately half the group had had surgery.
Aim: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of first eye cataract surgery compared with no surgery from a health service and personal social services perspective.
Methods: An economic evaluation undertaken alongside a randomised controlled trial of first eye cataract surgery in secondary care ophthalmology clinics. A sample of 306 women over 70 years old with bilateral cataracts was randomised to cataract surgery (expedited, approximately four weeks) or control (routine, 12 months wait); 75% of participants had baseline acuity of 6/12 or better.
Anopheles aquasalis larvae are salt water tolerant, preferring concentrations between 10 and 20 parts per thousand (ppt). The larvicidal efficacy of two formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Vectobac-12AS and Bactivec), was investigated against An.

We report the clinical and histopathologic findings of bacillary angiomatosis involving the palpebral conjunctiva with concomitant infection by cytomegalovirus and Mycobacterium species in a patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. After debulking, the conjunctival tissue was studied with the use of light and electron microscopy; stains for bacteria, acid-fast bacilli, and Bartonella species; and immunohistochemical studies for cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus. We observed the typical histopathologic findings of bacillary angiomatosis, the presence of bacilli stained by the Steiner and Steiner method, and the electron microscopic demonstration of bacilli consistent with Bartonella species.

The larvae were maintained under laboratory conditions in salt concentrations of 10 g/l and 20 g/l of water. Daily recordings of the mortality of the larvae were made and the dates of change of instar were noted.

Some larvae show symptoms characteristic of bacterial infection; they become flaccid and lethargic, and show a marked loss of appetite. We isolated and identified 29 bacterial strains from live, dead and experimentally infected H.

Methods: Case series (3 patients).
Results: We describe the clinical, gross, and microscopic pathologic findings in 3 globes that were traumatically evulsed from their orbits.
Superficial leiomyosarcomas are rare in the head and neck region. Because of the infrequent nature of soft tissue sarcomas in general, superficial leiomyosarcomas are often misdiagnosed on clinical grounds. Immunohistochemistry is essential for an accurate histologic diagnosis, and it should include a broad panel of antibody studies.

Lepidopteran larvae may be attacked by different viruses, many of which belong to the Baculoviridae family. Whilst studying the ultrastructure of the neck gland in Dione junio larvae we found that in later instars the larvae showed symptoms of attack by two types of virus. The glands were prepared for optical and electron microscopy using sodium cacodylate buffer and standard procedures (0.
