Screening ability of dental students to detect osteoporosis on dental panoramic radiographs.

Objectives: Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis are frequently underdiagnosed. In Japan, general dental practitioners have begun using the cortical shape of the mandible on dental panoramic radiographs (PRs) to identify and refer women at risk of osteoporosis to medical professionals. It remains unclear whether dental students, after relevant education, possess the ability to identify these at-risk individuals.

Background: The effect of vessel morphology on the technical success and patency of Viabahn stent-grafts in treating postoperative arterial injuries and bleeding (AIB) after hepatopancreatobiliary surgery is not well understood. Difficulties in stent insertion persist despite using stiff guidewires to straighten tortuous vessels. This study aimed to identify vessel morphologies linked to technical success and short-term patency and to explore effective management strategies.

Automated cell detection for immediate early gene-expressing neurons using inhomogeneous background subtraction in fluorescent images.

Unlabelled: Although many methods for automated fluorescent-labeled cell detection have been proposed, not all of them assume a highly inhomogeneous background arising from complex biological structures. Here, we propose an automated cell detection algorithm that accounts for and subtracts the inhomogeneous background by avoiding high-intensity pixels in the blur filtering calculation. Cells were detected by intensity thresholding in the background-subtracted image, and the algorithm's performance was tested on NeuN- and c-Fos-stained images in the mouse prefrontal cortex and hippocampal dentate gyrus.

Background: The distribution of anti-factor Xa activity (AXA) in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) taking edoxaban 15 mg has not been fully elucidated.

Methods And Results: The trough and peak AXA were measured in 19 NVAF patients taking edoxaban 15 mg. We compared these results with those in patients taking edoxaban 30 mg.

Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of the liver: A case report featuring characteristic nodular and perinodular enhancement.

A 53-year-old female with primary biliary cholangitis was referred for the evaluation of a hepatic nodule identified during routine imaging. Ultrasonography revealed a homogeneous, hypoechoic, 18 mm nodule in segment 3 of the liver. On dynamic CT and MRI, the nodule showed mild enhancement at the hepatic artery-dominant phase.

Impact of HIF prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors in heart failure patients with renal anemia.

Objective: Hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitors are a new class of anti-anemia agents. We retrospectively evaluated the safety and efficacy of HIF-PH inhibitors in patients with heart failure (HF) complicated by anemia associated with chronic kidney disase. HIF-PH inhibitor treatment was initiated in 32 patients with chronic HF complicated by renal anemia and were followed up for 3 months.

Ultra-high-density mapping for safe and effective typical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia ablation.

Ultra-high-density mapping was used for potential-guided radiofrequency ablation for typical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia. The mapping detailed the spread of activation in the Koch's triangle and identified target potentials and tachycardia circuits. This mapping provides additional information to the slow pathway conventionally used for safe and effective ablation.

Extracting electromyographic signals from multi-channel LFPs using independent component analysis without direct muscular recording.

Electromyography (EMG) has been commonly used for the precise identification of animal behavior. However, it is often not recorded together with electrophysiology due to the need for additional surgeries and setups and the high risk of mechanical wire disconnection. While independent component analysis (ICA) has been used to reduce noise from field potential data, there has been no attempt to proactively use the removed "noise," of which EMG signals are thought to be one of the major sources.

Systems consolidation induces multiple memory engrams for a flexible recall strategy in observational fear memory in male mice.

Observers learn to fear the context in which they witnessed a demonstrator's aversive experience, called observational contextual fear conditioning (CFC). The neural mechanisms governing whether recall of the observational CFC memory occurs from the observer's own or from the demonstrator's point of view remain unclear. Here, we show in male mice that recent observational CFC memory is recalled in the observer's context only, but remote memory is recalled in both observer and demonstrator contexts.

Episodic memory, which refers to our ability to encode and recall past events, is essential to our daily lives. Previous research has established that both the entorhinal cortex (EC) and hippocampus (HPC) play a crucial role in the formation and retrieval of episodic memories. However, to understand neural circuit mechanisms behind these processes, it has become necessary to monitor and manipulate the neural activity in a cell-type-specific manner with high temporal precision during memory formation, consolidation, and retrieval in the EC-HPC networks.

Characterization of Megabat-Favored, CA-Dependent Susceptibility to Retrovirus Infection.

The isolation of the Koala retrovirus-like virus from Australian megabats and the identification of endogenous retroviruses in the bat genome have raised questions on bat susceptibility to retroviruses in general. To answer this, we studied the susceptibility of 12 cell lines from 11 bat species to four well-studied retroviruses (human and simian immunodeficiency viruses [HIV and SIV] and murine leukemia viruses [B- and N-MLV]). Systematic comparison of retroviral susceptibility among bats revealed that megabat cell lines were overall less susceptible to the four retroviruses than microbat cell lines, particularly to HIV-1 infection, whereas lineage-specific differences were observed for MLV susceptibility.

In 20 patients with persistent AF who underwent ablation at our hospital, arrhythmogenic foci were evaluated using both these methods.
