Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway dysregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, and the sonic Hh (SHh) protein, a pivotal molecule in the Hh pathway, is expressed in ballooned hepatocytes. The present study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological significance of SHh expression in steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma (SH-HCC). Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry were performed to examine gene and SHh protein expression in SH-HCC.

Case Summary: Gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI) revealed the nodule in S5 with a defect at the hepatobiliary phase, hyperintensity on diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and hypointensity on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed hypervascularity at the early phase, and delayed contrast-enhancement was observed at the late phase.
Aim: Although Makuuchi's criteria are widely used to determine the cut-off for safe liver resection, there have been few reports of concrete data supporting their validity. Here, we verified the utility of Makuuchi's criteria by comparing the operative mortality rates associated with liver resection between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients meeting or exceeding the criteria.
Methods: A database was built using data from 15 597 patients treated between 2000 and 2007 for whom values for all three variables included in Makuuchi's criteria for liver resection (clinical ascites, serum bilirubin, and indocyanine green clearance) were available.
Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) shows a high mortality rate. A macrotrabecular (MT) pattern and vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) pattern have been reported as aggressive histological patterns in HCC. However, their cut-off values have been contentious.

Patients And Methods: Fifteen patients who underwent hepatectomy for primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were included in the study.
Inotuzumab ozogamicin (InO) was administered in three cases of relapsed/refractory adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) before allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). One case developed extremely severe sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) but recovered after receiving defibrotide therapy. A gap of 63 days in the SOS case was noted from the last administration of InO to allo-SCT, the duration was 133 and 86 days for the other two cases, and the remaining risk factors for SOS were comparable in the three cases.

However, the identification of ballooned hepatocytes is often difficult, especially in the clinical setting of patients with other chronic liver diseases. In this study, we investigated the utility of immunostaining for positive sonic hedgehog (SHh) protein and negative Keratin 8/18 (K8/18) expression on ballooned hepatocytes.

We report a case of a 74-year-old man with T1b rectosigmoid(RS)cancer, whose pulmonary metastasis(PM) was curatively resected during the postoperative period of ESD for primary lesions. The patient underwent ESD in November 2018 for Type 0-Isp CRC in the RS junction, revealed using colonoscopy, which was performed for the examination of blood stool in September 2018.

We conducted a clinicopathological study of patients who underwent curative NBNC-HCC resection, including proliferative activity assessments, such as nuclear grade and Ki-67 labelling index (LI).
Materials And Methods: Histopathological findings of 197 patients were examined, including 56 NBNC-HCCs, 45 hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCCs (HBV-HCC), and 96 hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCCs (HCV-HCC).
Background: Bispectral index (BIS) monitoring is a widely used non-invasive method to monitor the depth of anesthesia. However, in the event of surgeries requiring a frontal approach, placement of the electrode may be impossible at the designated area to achieve a proper BIS measurement.
Methods: We developed an investigational interface device to connect needle-electrodes to BIS sensors.
The Clinical Practice Manual for Hepatocellular Carcinoma was published based on evidence confirmed by the Evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines for Hepatocellular Carcinoma along with consensus opinion among a Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH) expert panel on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Since the JSH Clinical Practice Guidelines are based on original articles with extremely high levels of evidence, expert opinions on HCC management in clinical practice or consensus on newly developed treatments are not included. However, the practice manual incorporates the literature based on clinical data, expert opinion, and real-world clinical practice currently conducted in Japan to facilitate its use by clinicians.

Introduction: Most studies predicting survival after resection, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and ablation analyzed diameter and number of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) as dichotomous variables, resulting in an underestimation of risk variation. We aimed to develop and validate a new prognostic model for patients with HCC using largest diameter and number of HCCs as continuous variables.
Methods: The prognostic model was developed using data from patients undergoing resection, TACE, and ablation in 645 Japanese institutions.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the patient outcomes of non-curative hepatic resections for HCC using data from bi-annual nationwide surveys conducted in Japan.
Method: Data of 1084 non-curative hepatic resections for HCC were collected.
Background/aim: We investigated the anti-proliferative effect of quercetin on liver cancer cell lines.
Materials And Methods: Thirteen liver cancer cell lines were cultured followed by treatment with varying concentrations of quercetin (0-100 μM) or quercetin and 5-FU, and the cell viability was analysed by the MTT assay. Flow cytometry was also used to examine cell cycle progression after treatment with quercetin.
Background/aim: Assessment of the biological behavior of tumors is important for choosing an appropriate cancer therapy. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the biological behaviour can be assessed by tumor morphology and molecular biology. This study investigated the usefulness of tumor tissue biopsy for predicting the biological behavior of HCC.

Differentiation between well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma and focal nodular hyperplasia is necessary to diagnose hepatocellular adenoma through imaging; however, the tumor marker of hepatocellular carcinoma, protein induced by vitamin K absence, or antagonist II (PIVKA-II), is rarely positive in hepatocellular adenoma.
Case Presentation: A 44-year-old woman presented to our hospital with complaints of loss of appetite and weight loss.
