Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate how effective the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is for suspected gastrointestinal bleeding in hospitals and its impact on hospital stays and endoscopic procedures.
  • It found that FOBT is often misused for diagnosing gastrointestinal bleeding, showing low sensitivity and leading to inefficient management decisions, such as unnecessary endoscopies and extended hospital stays.
  • The authors recommend that FOBT should primarily be used for outpatient colorectal cancer screening, not for hospital evaluations of gastrointestinal bleeding or anemia.

Inflammatory bowel disease is associated with higher rates of anxiety and depression compared to the general population. We aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients with ulcerative colitis and correlation to disease activity. In this cross-sectional study, we collected data from 70 consecutive ulcerative colitis patients over one year at our inflammatory bowel disease outpatient clinic through an interview and a questionnaire containing patient demographics and disease characteristics.

Purpose: Microsatellite instability (MSI) caused by mismatch repair protein (MMRP) deficiency is detected in 15% of sporadic colorectal cancers (CRCs). Our aim is to investigate the frequency of MMRP deficiency in young CRC patients, using immunohistochemical analysis.

Methods: This study targeted cases of CRC at King Hussein Cancer Center from 2004 until 2012 in patients 45 years of age or younger at the time of diagnosis.

Background: Many studies showed an association between absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute monocyte count (AMC), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with poor overall survival (OS) in patients with cancer. However, only a few studies were conducted to further investigate this association in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Clinical data from 299 stage IV CRC patients treated at King Hussein Cancer Center from 2004 to 2012 have been retrospectively reviewed.
