Canaliculitis is defined as infection of the canalicular part of the lacrimal system. Despite usual presenting clinical characteristics such as pouting of the lacrimal punctum, discharge, and redness at the medial canthus area, it is usually misdiagnosed and overlooked. The presence of punctal ulceration and tissue necrosis is an uncommon presentation in these patients.

We report a case of a young healthy patient who developed orbital cellulitis and scleritis after retinal detachment surgery that was repaired with a scleral buckling procedure. Once scleral implant infection occurs, orbital infection results requiring removal of the implant in all previous reported cases. However, our patient was treated with systemic antibiotic and steroids without the need for removal of the scleral buckle.

The authors are describing two rare cases of dacryops involving the Krause accessory lacrimal glands and affecting the orbit. In both cases, the lesion was located in the inferior fornix, with no preceding trauma, surgery or trachomatous conjunctival scarring. The first case involved a clear orbital extension with evidence of optic nerve compression.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the characteristics, microscopic examination, and treatment of congenital upper eyelid coloboma (CEC) in a Saudi population, reviewing medical records from 27 patients with a focus on demographics and surgical outcomes.
  • - Results show that CEC often occurs bilaterally, is frequently found in the medial upper lid, and usually affects the full thickness of the eyelid, with common associations like corneal adhesion and poorly formed eyebrows.
  • - Histopathological findings reveal consistent features across cases, including scarring and muscle atrophy, and while some patients achieved good visual acuity and lid closure after surgery, overall cosmetic and functional success remains difficult to attain.

The ocular surface is a component of the anterior segment of the eye and is covered by the tear film. Together, they protect the vital external components of the eye from the environment. Injuries, surgical trauma, and autoimmune diseases can damage this system, and in severe cases, tissue engineering strategies are necessary to ensure proper wound healing and recovery.

Idiopathic orbital inflammation, also known as orbital pseudotumor, describes a spectrum of idiopathic, non-neoplastic, non-infectious, space-occupying orbital lesions without identifiable local or systemic cause. The condition occurs mainly in young adults who may present with acute pain, proptosis, chemosis and limitations of extraocular movements. Decreased vision due to optic nerve infiltration and macular edema as a result of scleritis is less common sequel of orbital pseudotumor.
