Background: The development of newer agents, including anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), has significantly improved overall survival (OS) in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). However, the treatment of older patients with RRMM who are transplant-ineligible remains challenging.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated OS in 78 transplant-ineligible patients with RRMM who were aged ≥ 65 years and treated at our institution between February 2012 and November 2023.

Group A streptococcal infections in children typically present as pharyngitis but can manifest as skin infections. In infants, streptococcal skin infections can be difficult to differentiate from other skin conditions such as seborrheic or atopic dermatitis. Additionally, if another family member has a streptococcal infection or is a carrier, treating only the patient may lead to recurrence.

Sarcopenia is prevalent among 11-25% of adult cancer survivors, depending on the cancer type, although the available data on post-treatment survivors in Japan are limited. If cancer patients develop cachexia, they may experience sustained weight loss as a result, ultimately leading to sarcopenia. Conversely, some patients experience post-treatment weight gain, resulting in sarcopenic obesity.

The incidence of human diphyllobothriasis is expected to rise amidst the current global popularity of Japanese cuisine, such as sushi, which contains raw fish. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy with a diphyllobothriasis infection acquired via sushi consumption. The patient was otherwise healthy, exhibited no symptoms, and was successfully treated with a single dose of 10 mg/kg praziquantel.

Pyrene derivatives bearing substituents at positions 1, 3, 6, and 8 find numerous applications, as exemplified by their use in lasers, sensors, and bioimaging probes. However, these derivatives typically have point-symmetric or short-axially symmetric structures, whereas long-axially symmetric derivatives remain underexplored because of the difficulty in obtaining their precursor, 1,3-dibromopyrene. To address this problem, we herein synthesized 1,3-dibromopyrene from 1-methoxypyrene in an overall yield (71 % over four steps) considerably exceeding those of existing methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a genetic disorder that affects bone health, with adult-onset HPP being a milder form that appears after age 18, causing issues like osteomalacia.
  • A case study of a 64-year-old woman with pseudofractures and low alkaline phosphatase levels led to a diagnosis of HPP, confirmed by a specific genetic variant.
  • Treatment with asfotase alfa (AA) resulted in significant improvements in her bone healing and mobility over six months, suggesting that AA is effective for severe HPP cases, while also identifying a new variant in the gene responsible for the disease.

Non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS), a remarkable ensemble of changes in serum thyroid hormone concentration during acute illness, was first reported in the 1970s. While NTIS is not a form of hypothyroidism, it is characterized by a decrease in serum triiodothyronine (T3) or thyroxine (T4) or both with normal or decreased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Notably, it typically resolves without thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Natriuretic peptides exert not only blood-lowering but also kidney-protective effects through guanylyl cyclase-A (GC-A), a natriuretic peptide receptor. Signaling through GC-A has been shown to protect podocytes from aldosterone-induced glomerular injury, and a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor reduced glomerular injury in aldosterone-infused podocyte-specific GC-A knockout mice. To explore the role of p38 MAPK in podocytes, we constructed podocyte-specific p38 MAPK and GC-A double knockout mice (pod-double knockout mice).
